View Full Version : FTP Image server
The new home of the ReplayTV OS images is now online. It can be accessed at:
ReplayTV OS Images (ftp://replay:giveme@ftp.kdhnews.com)
For those users who want to use a real FTP client: Point it to ftp.kdhnews.com, username: replay, password: giveme.
The site is not owned or operated by me, but I can administer it when needed. The space was donated by another AVS user who has never posted to this board but lingers in the mist (spooky eh?).
If you have an image to upload or other material, please private message me.
Karl
Sweet! Thanks for the update and all of your efforts!

looks GREEAAATTTTT!!
Are you interested in having it mirrored?
Please describe this anonymous donor and tell him to get an AVS acct, so we can embarrass him w/ thanks ;)
EDIT: I meant besides thanks to Ghoul too, of course (lest this be taken as a slight on his part) :D
FTP mirrors are welcome ... just make sure the following:
1. In your signature, make sure you post that you are a mirror site.
2. Do not allow uploads. The primary site should be the only place where new distributions go first, mirrors will then get them when, then, uh mirror.
3. Do your initial copy of the site during off hours. (That means its very dark outside).
4. Please copy the entire site (its less than a CDs worth) not pieces of it.
5. Always notifiy my of new mirrors so that I can add them to my sig and to this thread.
6. Use the same userid and password as the other sites.
Okay?
With that said.. don't everybody start making mirrors. A mirror site is not your laptop that may be online sometimes during the day. A mirror site needs to be up 24x7x52.
Oh, LizardBoys PayPal instructions for turning a 5500 into a 5000 has been removed. Cute. :D

Just seeing if you're paying attention :p
I've setup an http mirror of your ftp site.
http://rgb.cc/replaytv
I thought it would be nice to have an http option.
Yeah, I know ftp is faster than http, but there are times I prefer using http.
It is on a very reliable highspeed connection & highly availalbe server. Uptime should not be a problem. But, because of bandwidth costs it will be limited to 25GB/month.
The only problem is that since it is http, Internet Explorer tries to decompress .gz files while downloading and still saves it with the .gz extension, the file will need to be renamed once downloaded. But anyone downloading a .gz file probably won't be using IE.
I found only one .gz file on the site. replay5040.rtv.gz
I don't post enough to this forum for it to be usefull having it in my sig.
You can add it to yours as http mirror: http://rgb.cc/replaytv or whatever.
It will behave as a mirror should and refresh itself when it is 'very dark out' and will grab only new or changed files.

I've added a section to my FAQ site with a list of image sites. If you add an additional mirror, please email me and I will add your mirror site to the list.
Version 110 for the 50xx series will be online later tonight. This is a user upload and has not been tested by anyone other that the person who created it.
You of course will need to still patch your drive and perform a factory reset to clear out any custom user data.
I have setup an FTP mirror site ftp://209.27.60.45
Sorry I do not have a name for it. The connection is not very fast and its limited to 10 users at a time. There is no username/password set on it. It is up 24x7x52
I just noticed that I don't have a copy of the 5500 OS disk image. If anyone just happened to open their new 5500 please make an image for the rest of us in case we need to restore do to hardware issues or HD upgrades. Please PM me for instructions on how and where to upload.
Thanks!
Karl
Karl,
What's the status of your image site? My mirror has not been able to connect for some time and I am seeing a large increase in traffic which will put this mirror in jeopardy if something isn't done soon.
Bob
rgb.cc
Sorry guys.
I had to pull my mirror. I can't do this alone.
20GB per day is a bit too much for my wallet at the moment.
I'll reopen it on Mar 1 when my ISP resets my bandwidth counters.
Bob
rgb.cc
Bob, I have a feeling the increased traffic is due to the 5500 users looking for 5k images.
I think that will drop down... as of this week there are other developments which should limit the need for those files. =)

A server at www.ev1servers.net (former Rackshack.net) for like 99 dollars a month is a good deal if you can use it for something other than replay images. You get like 700 gb of bandwith
Let me apologize for the master server being down. Do to a potential security "event" last week, the server has been offline. I am working with the server's owner to have it on-line as soon as possible. Please remember that I just administer the site ... it is graciously hosted by a quiet member of the Replay community. Together we do this to support the ReplayTV community as a hobby.
I'll let everyone know when it is back online.
Arghhhhh, no replay. I can't pull the image off my drive, it already went to hell.
Sigh.
I feel like I'm in TV Limbo with out it...
I do appreciate all that y'all do.
Waiting humbly, watching my 4000 for some kind of life
Michael
It's amazing how people don't appriciate stuff until it's gone.
Not that I'm saying people don't appriciate the free image hosting, but you just don't notice it as much until it's not there.
I think we need a crash coarse in FTP so people can upload images to other's when needed for situations like this. I believe I have a 4000 image still around, but have no idea how to get it to ya.

Thank you very much Mikeyboy. Worked great, althou I had to reset my replay to factory, some reason it thought it needed a modem and I couldn't get into the menu to change it because I need to connect to replay so it would reactivate.
Working great now.
Again, thank you for saving me from TV Hell...
Michael
Michael, do us all a favor... call replay Tech support and describe the problem you had.
Lyndon has reported here repeatedly that this problem has been fixed. But it keeps popping up. If people don't report the problem DNNA will never know it's causing users problems.

Another Argh! My Replay 4xxx went belly up last night. It starts, but reboots as soon as I tyr to do anything. I saved an image Aug 2, 2002. Will that work, or do I need a newer one? I think that was the 4.3 version; will the minor updates happen automatically witha new drive?

That should work. I don't believe you'll screw up anything by trying it. I've put older images on my machines before and it will just upgrade to the newest version after the first or second net connection.

In case anyone else is wondering, the 8/2/02 4xxx image worked fine. Except, of course, that I had to do a factory reset to clear the activation message.
What's the easiest way to send someone an image. I don't use any MS, AOL type messengers, icq ect.
Wish I could just instruct someone something like this:
Download this tiny program and install it:
http//www.werwerwerwer.com/werwerwe
Run it. Type 'asdfaslkdjfa;sldkjf' in the box and I'll send it to you soon.
anyone know of a tiny clint like this?

Besides kazaa, et al?
I don't want to push kazaa on every person I want to send a file.
There's got to be some 80k client out there somewhere. I could spend a week downloading 30 of them, but sometimes it's just easier to ask.
cow
put them in multiple yahoo briefcase files and share - open 5 or so new yahoo e-mail accounts then upload the one image file to each account
open a test acocunt at 50megs.com
post to a usenet group - may only last a few days based on individual isp settings
smartftp is a small, free ftp program
Someone could setup a torrent so we can all help send out the images. It's a distributed system like kazaa, but is geared more towards legitimate uses. Many linux isos are spread this way. We could just point people to the single torrent file which can be opened by their bittorrent program and it starts downloading from everybody who is sharing/seeding.

I could post the 4000 software like this, what torrent tracker you want it on?

I can offer a fully functional 4k image also. Just imaged it today from an in-service unit in fact. It's already been factory reset too - last thing I did after a few forced net-connects to ensure most current OS was loaded was a 382-zone and then answer "Yes" to the reboot question.
(Going to be building my own 2k & 5k image later this weekend w/ same procedure)
If the master servers are still down or their images are shot, PM me and I can bring it up on FTP for you to pull it, it will not be an public/annonymous server though - all accounts are individualy issued and monitored.
These are my images, on my servers - they are being offered up only if the masters are down and you're stuck - I've been there and frankly it sucks, so I understand, hence the offer. I'm not going to start my own image tree nor provide 5k images to 55xx systems. Like I said, it's being offered because I can, only as an (emergency) option, if your stuck, it's not a coup. Ghoul, send me a note if you want the offer recinded and it will be.

*sigh* It was a nice idea while it lasted...
Unfortunately, the company that was "hosting" my servers went belly-up about a week after my original post.
Appologies to all.

Why not post all your Drive Images to the news groups and let the world descide if it's worthy too stay?
Once released to the news groups it will stay on random PC's and just needs to be requested.
I suggest alt.binaries.multimedia since it's loaded with mpegs ripped from other Replay devices. But I realy think some one needs to start up alt.binaries.replaytv

I can put up a FTP site/mirror that is rock solid stable, however, it's a 128K ISDN line. It currently uses almost no bandwidth so would be dedicated to the ReplayTV Images and will not be subject to bandwidth limitations (other than speed). Is this worth it to the community even if it's slower than most people would wish for?

May I suggest you PM Ghoul as he's the resident image host and tell him what you can provide.

I am desperate for a 5xxx image. My replay went down yesterday and I haven't been able to find a server that is up to download from!
The funniest thing is I have a webserver with 1200 megs worth of space... so I could be hosting easly 2 -3 images :(
Oh well... if anyone has any images or wants me to host some I would love to! Just get me a 5xxx image :)

No frills, here it is ->
ftp://ftp.clusterpower.com/pub/replaytv/
http://ftp.clusterpower.com/pub/replaytv/
128K ISDN
I highly recommend using a ftp / http client that restarts failed downloads.
If I am missing any files, please let me know.
I will try my hand at mirroring the images if more mirrors are still needed.
My Sparc is up 7x24 so not a big deal. My DSL is only 256K but is getting upgraded to 1M at the end of the week. I have no bandwidth limitations/data caps/etc.
(or at least I don't yet....)
Ok.
It is back up... for now.
Lets see how it goes.
This mirror is on my server that is used by my small business.
I hope to continue to support the replay community, but in a way that I can afford.
More mirrors are definitely needed. I will post a list on my mirror as they get added.

How much total space is needed for the Replay Images?
Is that just one image or all the different images? I'm not talking about different varients of each though, just the newest image needed for each model.

OK, I am downloading the Images right now...
I am going to setup another mirror.
I have a couple of questions on this:
1. Are there any legal repercussions for doing this?
2. I noticed that bob said his would mirror only the updated files. How is this setup? Is there ftp software that will do this? If so - can I get a link to a how-to on setting this up?
Thanks - and the mirror should be up either tonight or tomorrow!
I have mirrored the images at
ftp.cubbyhole.com/replaytv
Right now speeds are limited to 8KBytes/sec. I will increase this at the end of the week when my DSL is upgraded.
airedale

?!?! 8K a sec? That is pretty bad. Are you sure you want to be hosting this off a home line?

I said that's what I limited it to, I didn't say thats what I had. I will work out something when my line is upgraded...I'm certainly not going to give away every KB I have so I can't use the link.
When I have a moment over the next couple of days, I will increase it to 80K during the night/day and lower it in the evening.
Start the download and go to bed...Are you in that much of a hurry?

Of course we are :D I wanna be able to download a 700 MB file in 30 minutes tops.
Just kidding, anything is better than what we had last week.... which was nothing. I can't blame ya for not wanting to give all your bandwidth at all. Hopefully this won't be an issue soon.

I know I was in a hurry the other day when my replay died...
Anyway, the server I will have the images hosted on will have at least a 250K download and will probably exceed that easily.
Will post the info after all the files have uploaded.

The way I do mine is with wget:
wget -m -nH --progress=dot:mega ftp://replay:giveme@ftp.kdhnews.com/ -o .mirror_log
I have this set as a cron job to run nightly and it will only grab new files.
But you will have to manually delete files if they disappear off of the primary.

I cleaned up my site now that I have the full mirror image.
The link(s) going forward will be:
FTP - ftp://replaytv.clusterpower.com/
HTTP - http://replaytv.clusterpower.com/
All files are in the replaytv directory similar to the other mirrors. I ran across a few extra files that I did not see on other mirrors, so I included them as well. I had downloaded them from other sites in the past.
replaytv.clusterpower.com and ftp.clusterpower.com are interchangeable. They are DNS aliases to the actual host. DNS should update within the next few hours and they will all work. It's been posted either way once or twice. Sorry for any confusion.
Server is back online. Please upload new images to the uploads directory and let me know. Sorry for the long down time.
Could everyone who is running a mirror PM or email me with information about your site and where you are mirroring from (who is the master).
Also, if you notice files that aren't on the Primary server let me know.
AND IF YOU UPLOAD ANYTHING LET ME KNOW. I see someone uploaded a new version of rtvpatch but I never would have noticed.. and I have to run it through the virus checker first.
Those of you with 55xx images and virgin images, please contact me again so we can get those online.
Bump.
I posted to the FAQ with the correct ftp site information... for those people who actually looked and found out the information there was wrong.
I've added a Bit Torrent Tracker and seeds for some of the most popular image downloads.
If you can, please download these via Bit Torrent.
The Tracker URL: http://rgb.cc:6969/
Since Bit Torrent works best with popular files I will add the other images as demand increases.
If you are not familiar with Bit Torrent, then feel free to use the images on the http mirror for now:
http://rgb.cc/replaytv
Bit Torrent adds a new protocol for downloading large files.
For more info:
http://bittorrent.com
To download the client:
http://bittorrent.com/download.html
It will be very helpful for you to keep your torrent open even after the download as this will help others download images faster and share the load.
I'm interested in your feedback on this also, let me know how it is working for you
Thanks

Great Idea - I'll be glad to seed both of them. I've been using the client from azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/) for a while and I like it much better than the standard client.

Great! The more seeds the better. :)
The newly revised, nearly all inclusive ReplayTV DIY upgrade site, www.replaytvupgrade.com has also been updated to show info on the bit torrent download of image files. Thanks.
