djmr2,
Why are you using 1080i over DVI on a Sammy HLN? The set is 720P native (all other formats being converted by the set itself to 720P), so to get the best picture you should set the player to output 720P.

Can someone comment on 4:3 material for this player. Does it stretch the material through DVI or does the player allow you to set it up as 4:3 to achieve black bars on the left and right side?
As my Samsung HLN will stretch material through DVI, the only way to correct this is via the player, such as the new 841, which unfortunately isn't getting great reviews.
Thanks!

Just picked up this player yesterday.
Notes:
I purchased this for 1080i upconversion through component to my Toshiba 42H82 HDTV (no DVI unfortunately)
Thoughts:
Very impressed. Not only on test patterns (avia) but in real movies the picture is noticably cleaner than my Toshiba SD-4800 (which I really thought highly of). The settings needed to be changed quite a bit as the factory settings found my colours over saturated and leaning to the red. As well the overscan was noticably different from my Toshiba so adjustments had to be made.
Haven't been able to test a lot as of yet. Still not sure what the player does with 4:3 material when upconverted but I am confident this will be staying in my set up for a while (especially if the component upconverison really does dissapear from the market).
For $200 CDN this was a steal. Very pleased.
hey Version, just wondering where you found this player in Toronto for $200 cdn? I was going to go to Futureshop to get them to price match the 2001 Audio Video price of $250.
I'd love a PM my way as well version as to how to get it for 200 bucks :)

Gotta do a me too for a pm on that price. :) The local futureshop has one but the build date is Nov 2003 and the price is $300cdn. :( If anyone has a location for a better price I sure would like to hear about it.

For those who still haven't located this player yet, its now online at Futureshop. Looks to be $50 more than some smaller outlets.
Link to product at Futureshop.ca (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&dept=11&WLBS=fsweb13&sku_id=0665000FS10045708&catid=&newdeptid=11)
Still waiting for someone to comment on 4:3 material if anyone has tried it yet on DVI?
Will I suffer from PQ loss if I run this dvd player through my receiver? I have one of those audio/video switches so I could go with that alternative as well, but just wondering if my receiver can handle the signal that the dvd player is going to send. I have a Yamama HTR5750 receiver.

If your receiver has DVI switching there is no loss but S Video or component may be be different as they are analog streams.

I've played with my unit for a bit now.
Still love the PQ. but... I am frustrated with how hard it is to pillar box 4:3 DVDs. I have to set the DVD player back to 480p (by pushing buttons on the actual player - no remote control) and then switch my TV into a pillar box mode.
Further the CD playback is severely lacking. I certainly would not recommend using this player for music. However I do find the DD and DTS playback to be quite nice and perfetly aceptable formovies.
Also the remote is not very nice at all. Luckily it will be retired anyway since I love my Harmony SST-659 Remote.
Anyway the player will definitely be staying in my set up but I have decided to keep my Toshiba SD-4800 for 4:3 DVD playback and CD/ DVD-A listening.
Too bad I can't find one unit to do everything (including DVD-A and SACD). Still, I am very pleased with my purchase.
Does it stretch the material through DVI or does the player allow you to set it up as 4:3 to achieve black bars on the left and right side?
Nope. There's no aspect ratio control, through DVI or component.

Have people tried this player with a Sanyo Z1? Does it look better in 1080i or 480p?
I am looking to replace my Panasonic RP56, and this looks like a good candiate.

It'll only work if your receiver has enough bandwith to pass 1080i. I have the zenith dvb318 and initially tried to use component output to my kenwood sovereign 5900 and there was insufficient bandwith to get a picture lock. With my prior player, a sony dvpns700p at 480p there was no problem passing this picture.

I've read through most of this long thread and have a couple unresolved questions.
1) How does this player look through DVI on a Samsung DLP HLP model tv?
2) Does it still have white crush after the firmware upgrade or is it just reduced?
3) Does it still look better through Component?
4) How can you tell the firmware version?
5) How long does it take to get it back if sending it in to get flashed?
6) After what manufacture date does it have the latest firmware?
7) If the native mode of my TV is 720p is the best setting to have the DVD player on 720p or 1080i?
8) In the end is this a still recommended DVI player next to all others in its price range?
Thanks
...also, is it normal for this player to lock up when playing a DVD and require a hard reboot..is that bug related to DVI or just bad disks?

You're probably not getting any replies to your questions because they have been answered, some only a page or two back.
As for 720p, it is generally recommended you run that to your DLP to avoid up/down scaling, but it will all boil down to your personal preference. Samsung units tend to be quite different OOTB, though DVI “should” be your best bet.

After reading many of the great reviews for this player (in this price range), and after resisting the temptation to buy an HD931 for about the past six months since buying by 56"Sammy DLP, I just couldn't resist today when I got this player for $219 Cdn at Visions!! I thought that was a great price, but to top it all off, I received a $100 in-store credit as a result of my Sammy dropping in price since what I paid (store policy), thus, I paid $119 Cdn... gotta love it!!
Overall, pretty impressed.

poler, this is a bug related to the Auto-play feature of the player, which basically skips all menus, FBI warnings, previews, etc. and jumps straight to the movie, i.e. the Title with the longest running time on the disc. It seems that discs with lots of Titles cause the player to freeze up while searching for the longest title. Avia is known to do this. If this happens to you, just unplug the player and plug it back in, then disable the Auto-play feature and play your disc.

Paul441, are you using DVI? If so, have you noticed any audio/video sync problems with your Sammy?
What firmware does your unit have? I'm curiouse to see if Visions is carrying a new version, Futureshop only seems to have November builds in Calgary.
Thanks!
I heard that the Zenith Clone of this player in the US has a firmware update for that fixes the DVI white crush problem and some "other" problems; did anyone hear anything on a firmware update for the LG unit?
Will the Zenith firmware work on the LG?
This firmware is also suppose to disable upconversion on RCE disc over components.
I plan to use the DVI if the bug are fixed by the firmware - cropping, DVI white crush mainly.

Phone LG Canada customer service and they will send you a firmware update disc. It's the same update as the Zenith as both are identical units with different names.
LG customer service has referred me to one of their authorized service agent, does anyone out there have this disc?
I thought this firmware was going to be available online.

Same thing here. LG customer service is refering me to an authorized service guy in my region...
So I did call this guy... but I got the usual "don't know what you are talking about" answer... This guy doesn't even knew what a DVI connection was... Sigh...
Hope someone will make the firmware available on the net...
The one I called up also did not know what I was talking but if I brought in the player they are sure that they could have it updated in about a week..Ha Ha
The service is pathetic!!

Well I took my player in to one of LG's service guys today who said that they could have it back to me within a few hours; I picked it up and brought it home and ...... No change whatsoever; all the settings were back to the default but nothing was fixed:
DVI white crush
Cropping
Dotted white line in 1080i DVI
Color saturation problem
All still there and I can still up-convert RCE disc via components.
They must have reloaded the old firmware... go figure.

What is the manufacture date of your player? I bought one with a date of November 2003 and the upconvert via DVI to 720p didn't work (or if it did, it was worse picture than my old 480i DVD player via composite). I brought it back and was going to get a refund when I noticed that the dealer also had players with a February 2004 manufacture date. I exchanged and tried again. Wow! The upconvert to 720p via DVI to my 56" Sammy DLP is awesome. Not sure what the white crush issue is.
Just bought this player today with a July 2004 build date. Upconverts via component (confirmed via my X1) and DVI (not field tested). With default settings, I have been so far impressed with it's PQ.
A local Future Shop had the same player with a November 2003 build date. A couple of months ago, a local Visions store had the players with the same Nov 2003 build date.
Edit: Upconversion to 1080i worked fine with LOTR Return of the King. However, with Star Wars Episode II, Spiderman, Master & Commander, the player kept downconverting back to 480p from either 720p or 1080i. Over the next day or two, I will try other DVDs and see if most of them will not upconvert. Until then, I suggest AVOIDING this build date. :(

component on this dvd player only support 480p and above.
480p and 720p do NOT look as good 1080i.
I was reading in the Zenith 318 thread about PQ via component and DVI connections. Someone mentioned something about a smooth circular DVD logo and I replied about how my logo is so jagged even at 1080i.
Someone there stated that it may be because of different software being used by LG.
Can anyone here tell me what their logos look like on their LG. I'm referring to the LG logo at the bottom center of the screen, the DVD disk logo at the top left-hand corner when a DVD is loaded, and the red triangle when there is no DVD loaded.
Displayed on my GWIII (fully UMR tweaked), these appear quite jagged especially the DVD playing logo and the triangle. There was some improvement on the LG logo when I set the player to 1080i over component but still not completely smooth.
These jagged edges are quite pronounced and I'm trying to determine if this is normal.
Any comments?
Thanks
Hi Dynot,
I have 2 of these players, one with a Nov. 2003 build date, the other with Feb. 2004.
The LG logo on the Nov. player is very blocky even at 1080i, but the Feb. player's logo looks good (very smooth).

But the main LG logo is very very smooth at 1080i
I just wanted to say thanks as I used your post to have Future Shop price match this player. It complements my BENQ PB6200 (component connection..no DVI) projector perfectly. It will make the wait for HD-DVD much easier.
I've got a standard 32" 4x3 direct view crt HDTV set with component video connections. It supports 480i, 480p & 1080i through the component video connections. It's a Toshiba 32HFX72.
My interest is solely in rental dvd movies, the standard stuff at the local video store.
I'm interested in buying the LG DV7832NXC, but 1st:
How does the picture compare at 1080i to 480p? Is it a modest improvement or what? Can anyone confirm that I can definitely get 1080i with the component video connection? Is it plug & play or do I need a techie to set it up? (I have limited technical skills.)
The price today (Sept4/04) is $250 at FutureShop
Anyone know of other Canadian links for this item. There was an earlier mention in the thread of Visions, but I couldn't find anything with Google.
What about the different mfgr dates? Should I be concerned if it's 11/03 or 2/04?

I have an 11/03 from 2001 and it works through component. With FS you can atleast return it for your money back. Is their an improvement? Yes! I felt the PQ was better than my Panasonic RP82 on my 47" Widescreen.

Yes. Everyone who has poste din this thread so far. Take a look at the box as well if you don't believe everyone. It is has a diagram clearly showing what each connection can output.
For the record:
DVI 480p, 720p, 1080i
Component 480p, 720p, 1080i
S-Video 480i
Composite 480i
How does the picture compare at 1080i to 480p? Is it a modest improvement or what?
I would say you are looking at about a 10 to 15% improvement on most set ups. So modest is a fair description. It certainly isn't true HD. Toshiba CRTs display 480p natively as well as 1080i. So the increase in PQ will not be as marked as it is on say my Toshiba RPTV, since it converts 480p to 540p before displaying it.

It is a subtle but definite improvement. Computer animated stuff like Finding Nemo is awesome. I have noticed that you end up with a more solid looking picture ie more three dimensional.
The difference with live action material varies from film to film depending on the transfer. The most easily apparent difference is in text - it is much more solid looking with not bleeding.

Been using the player for about a week now - as per Lou's post - Finding Nemo is just about the best DVD to showcase the capabilities of this player. Component output is awesome at 720p/1080i upconverted.
Biggest issue I've got with it is that it (and a couple of other ones I tried at the nearby 2001AudioVideo store) suffers from the DVI-HDMI freezup bug. I've sent a note to customerservice@lge.com but not sure whether they will reply or not...
I'm using the "old" firmware so component-based upconversion works fine, but it would be nice to be able to compare it with DVI-based output. Has anyone heard about LG/Zenith's "official" stance on this freezup issue?
So far, I have tested the following DVDs on my July 2004 build player and state if they upconvert or not via component on my X1 (3.6 firmware):
DVDs which upconvert to 1080i:
LOTR: ROTK
Last Samurai
Matrix Reloaded
Matrix Revolutions
LOTR: TT
Tomorrow Never Dies
DVDs which don't upconvert (stays at 480p):
LOTR: FOTR
Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
Star Wars: Attack of the Clones
Master and Commander
Matrix
Army of Darkness
Spiderman
To those with an earlier build player: Do all or most of your DVDs upconvert via component? If not, please state which ones do NOT upconvert....also, please state your build date? Thanks very much.

Dave,
I've got a November 2003 date of manufacture and it upconverts everything to 1080i or 720p.
Too bad about your experience. Probably has something to do with the fact that it's a newer model. That would be too hit or miss for me. I'd almost rather have one that either doesn't upconvert or upconvert everything. Otherwise, you just never know.

Does the DVI output an analog signal that I can convert with a VGA adaptor?
Thanks to all of you who took the time to comment on my earlier post. I bought it. I tried it. I returned it!
I bought the 2/04 build & with machine in hand, stopped & picked up 5 rental dvds. Set-up was very easy. Set the tv/monitor to 4:3 aspect and the option to panscan (manual says it fills the screen vs. the letterbox option that leaves bars top & bottom).
Movie #1 MI-2 in widescreen - the start-up displayed a 480p picture & I was successful in upconverting it to 1080i. The DV7832NXC clearly showed a modest increase in PQ. However, the panscan feature did not work. The vertical picture size displayed was 11.5" (full screen = 19") on my 32" HDTV. That's only 60% of my vertical screen space. That's like watching a 23" widescreen tv. This same movie with my old dvd player filled up the screen by 1/3rd more (15.5" vs 11.5"). Is it worth $250 + taxes to me to get a little better picture quality and a much smaller picture size? No.
Other comments
- up conversion not available with the remote control
- fast forward & reverse spin wheel, too gimmicky
- no unit feedback as to what is being output
Been reading this forum, has that issue with 1080i displaying a whitle line or dash ever been solved? I just got one of these today, and noticed the samething.... sometimes the white line appears on the image on the top left of the screen, and sometimes on the bottom middle, right where the bottom balck bar is. i've got 30 days to get a refund or exchange!! thanks!!
mystery
09-19-04, 07:24 AM
This white line seems to be related to pressing the upconversion button too quickly between changes from 480p to 720p to 1080i. I just leave mine at 1080i and feed 480i through s-video to another display in order to view non-critical material such as DVD extras.
However, if you wish to change between the lines of resolution, ensure that you don't change until the player has established that resolution on screen. Toggling through the resolutions too quickly will cause the white line to appear.
You can get rid of it by turning the player off and then back on again. It will reset itself to an image without a white line but will reappear if you don't follow the advice above.
This should work for you. Hope it goes well!
Wayne
UPDATE: I had the July 2004 build of the LG 7832 and it's back at the dealer for troubleshooting with LG (less than half of the 15 DVDs I tried upconverted via component). Sounds like your player is working just fine...with the new firmware they put in it that doesn't completely disable component video, but it certainly curbtails it considerably. Don't be surprised if this guy tells you nothing is wrong with it, or if you get one of those "new players", you see the same exact thing.
Look forward to hearing from you on this. Good luck!
Just my own observations so it maybe just my setup that caused these findings. I currently have a sony KP53HS30 RPTV that has the ability to support 1080i. I know the 1080i works since I watch HD via a SA Explorer 8000HD PVR. With LG player I had, the 480p was dead on, even the 720p was dead on (Sony converts 720p to 1080i) and all was good. Now the problem. When 1080i was selected the the picture was a slightly (very slight) compressed. The people just was a little more chubby then they looked at 480p/720p settings. This is is via component. I bought the LG just for the Sony to get upscaling using the component inputs. The more serious probm for me was the green push on the component inputs. At 1st I thought it was the DVD (Tears in the Sun) that was was watching since it has a lot of green jungle sceens but playing on my other DVD players (Pan RP91/65, JVD DR-M10S, Daytek RP30 (Liteon 5001 clone) and a bunch of mod'd cheap DVD players (Norcent "golden" 300's) there was no green color cast, since comfirmed using othet DVD's. Forgot to check manufact date before I returned it but I assumed its current production since the dealer just got them in. The LG went back and I am now waiting for a Denon 2910 that is back ordered. Also waiting on a Sammy HL-P6163W to be delivered (next week :D ).

Yup, the picture overscan and the green push via component. Again, these are the classic, well documented problems with this unit. If you hit my sig, the FAQs has a link at top directly to several threads that are specific to just about every problem you named here.
If you have a hundred years, you could do a search for Zenith 318 and browse through some of those threads, but the FAQs should be a great start.
All I can tell you upfront is: Be prepared to do some tweaking and fiddling and calibrating. You might want to consider getting something like DVE or AVIA to do a nice calibration job.
You gave up on the Zenith and I can understand that, but these problems could have easily been worked through.
David Barteaux
09-19-04, 06:31 PM
Well I wanted to keep this player, but the problems are just too many. Sure the price is great, but there are other DVI equiped players out on the horizon.
My observations:
Sony KP51WS500 CRT.
- 1080i component output does look better(sharper/more detail) than regular 480P from my Panny RP91.
- Colors were a bit undersaturated
- Black level too high
- Blocthy area in dark scenes like flickering brightness levels
- DVI brightness from player set way too high. I had to set brightness down on my TV to below 1/4.
- DVI red push or a reddish hue. Had to set Red cut in Sony service menu way down. May not be the players fault though.
Infocus X1.
- 1080i component looks slightly more detailed than from the Panny.
- Green push
- pixel cropping on the right
- Blocthy blacks as noticed above but more noticeable.
The reason I bought the player was the ability to upconvert to 1080i over component with protected DVD's.
Q of BanditZ

Fair enough. Problem is: Zenith is about the most reliable, and one of only a few players at all, that can upconvert over component i. There just aren't many other choices and, even at that, those choices are going to dwindle down.
If you want component upconversion, I think the Zenith is the best choice, even if it's just kind of by default.
anymore word on if there is a difference between the build dates of NOV 2003 and FEB 2004?
does the FEB 2004 not upconvert everything through component anymore?

Interesting you should ask. I just picked up a Feb 2004 player last weekend. It upconverts everything through component just fine.

I believe the July 2004 build does not scale 1080i over component with most DVD's. I had the Feb 2004 build and it upconverted everything I threw at it.
Mind you I was ready to throw the player out the window because of the way it handles black level
The LG people are blaming my problem (upconversion on only some DVDs...July 2004 build)on regional coding of the DVDs....in other words, that I was using non-region 1 DVDs. Based on what I have read on the Net, this is not a surprise response from a manufacturer like LG Canada. All of the DVDs that I had tried were bought here at major online and B&M dealers within Canada. On a hunch, I did try to play a R2 Hong Kong Legend title, New Dragon Gate Inn....it was recognized as the wrong region....no picture whatsoever, just blue screen.
Anyways, the dealer will be bringing in another player (same model, but with an older build date...Feb 2004?) from another city.
If you go to Zenith 318 FAQ, follow the method to display your firmware version and post it here, I will be able to tell you if your model has old firmware or new firmware. The new firmware won't upconvert RCE disks through component while the old one will upconvert every disks.
As far as to play R2 region disk, you can make your player region free by following the link in Zenith 318 FAQ too.

Just FYI, I have a sony 57ws510, you should know you need to go to service menu to change color matrix for component input from HD matrix to SD matrix, otherwise you would get green undersaturation. I am not sure what is the problem on the black level, it should be fine if you calibrated your set. DVI and component has about the same red push (<5%) if you set AXIS to 1 to minimize red push. It is not right to touch red CUT to reduce red push, you are actually changing grayscale instead of color decoder.
i have this LG dvd player and manage to make it region-free. Now my question: is this also a multisystem? say i bought dvd from UK which is PAL, will this convert to NTSC?
thanks.

I just got one of these players....... so far its nice, will do more testing with my Dell 2300MP projector.
BTW/ ...what cables came in the box?
Has anyone here had expereince with LG's service department?
My dvd player won't read dvd's anymore, and I was wondering what they were like to deal with? Is it going to cost me an arm and a leg to get the thing fixed? Thanks!
