I will try this on my Norcent DP-501M.

My RP-82 firmware upgrade has closed the gap on 480i/480p/1080i differences. There are NONE. Now the Norcent is good for Divx/MP4. The sound quality isn't as good as my RP82.

Thanks for the info; I'll flash my Norcent this evening.

Hmmm, perhaps I'm doing something stupid, but I can't get my Norcent to flash from 3.01 to this version.

It's telling me that the installed firmware is newer than the one on the CD. I've verified that I didn't burn the wrong file, but it's still erroring out on me.

Anyone else burned the Norcent with this latest download?

Thanks and best regards,
~~Nathan

Thanks Omikron for posting the firmware link. I had pretty much given up on LiteOn "finishing" the LVD-2001 firmware.

Nathan_R:

To update, put the update disc in the player. BEFORE it can fully load press and hold the Stop button on the front panel. While continuing to hold Stop, unplug the player. Wait 5-10 seconds. Plug back in while holding Stop. In a couple of seconds, player should start reading disc, you can let go of Stop button. Display will say "ISO Disc" or similar. Wait 5 minutes, upgrade will work.

I didn't notice any immediate picture improvements w/V302. I will test out some of the documented features later.

Speedy,

will try this on my Norcent DP-501M.

I couldn't agree more. My XP50 w/ V302 firmware is going to be my reference from here on out. Norcent/LiteOn assigned to bedroom!!

I'm starting to get firmware burn out.

Just installed my 6th Momitsu V880 firmware.

This will be my 5th LiteOn LVD-2001 firmware.

Now looking at a 5th Panasonic RP-91 firmware update too!

Omikron, I've seen you around the net. Thanks for the update. I totally can't keep track with all of this stuff now.

I think the reason is, along with Chengka's finding in the fnf file, there is a date in there that needs to match. I think the date in the v302 file is probably earlier than the one on your system. Thats my guess.

I dont believe 1080i from a normal DVD is dead however. I think its beyond the Norcent/Momitsu/LiteONs to do. Otherwise, the iScan HD wouldnt make any sense. My X1 clearly still has some room for improvements when the source is DVD at 480p. eg, my Comcast HD box with HDTV is still cleaner and better.

how are the results guys? can you report any news re: files that previously would not play are now playing w/no problems. and the other way around, are there files that played good with 0301b and cannot be played with this 0302? Inquiring minds want to know

My LiteOn/Norcent is officially bugging me.

1) Hooked it up to bedroom TV, choked on the first disc I through at it (Road Warrior, R1). A little sputter of sound and blank picture, display started ticking off seconds rapidly. I had to to a hard reboot to get it going again.

2) Since I'm using on a 4:3 set now, I noticed a terrible in-player letterboxing feature which causes "dual" black bars, top set generated by the player, inner set on the original anamorphic DVD. I played with the players picture controls briefly, but was unable to eliminate this problem. I hooked another player up to make sure it wasn't the TV. Sure enough, the LiteOn's in-player black bars were a substantially different voltage level.

Minor quirks, but I don't have these with my Panny.

FWIW, I'm using V302.

Does this disable the secret menu?

Yes, the secret menu is still there with v302 firmware. To access it, first by OPEN disc tray and type '2960' on the remote control. Region code and Macrovision setting are all there.

One question: Does the region code and macrovision stay turned off or do you have to turn them off everytime you want to scale upto 1080i?

Omikron

The region code stayed the same and macrovision stayed turned off even after the firmware update. Unless you have some RCE (region coding enhancement) DVDs, of which they don't work when region code is setted to '0', then you have to set the region code to appropriate number.

Hi Everyone,

I have a glitch(?) in my Norcent player.

I bought the player and everything went well except one disc so far. This is happening both BEFORE and AFTER the firmware upgrade from 2.23 to 3.02 (just finished the upgrade today), so I don't think it is a firmware issue any more.

The problem is that when I play "Indiana Jones: Last Crusade", it always seem to go into a stuttering pause and eventual freeze at the part near where Indiana Jones and his father meets the woman they both slept with in the same room in the castle.

The stuttering stop is a bit inconsistent but generally in that "location" of the disc. The disc is brand new and no visible damage in any way. In fact I have tried it on my Panasonic RP82 and it plays perfectly twice already.

Also, I don't have problem with any of the other discs in that Indiana Jones series or any other of the 100 or so DVDs I tried on the Norcent player. I have been using it with REGION 1 mode w/MACROVISION OFF since the day I got it. I cannot imagine this being a MACROVISION OFF issue since all the other discs played fine.

Can someone who have the same disc tell me if this is a "incompatibility" problem between the disc mastering and the player?

Thanks in advance!

Yahoo, it might be the Macrovision. I know it sounds weird, but I had the same problem with the second disc of Lord Of the Rings: The Two Towers extended edition. Once I turned Macrovision on, it worked fine.

After this I've just left macro vision on as I don't see any degradation on my display.

FYI, I have the LVD-2001, and I've watched Last Crusade with no problem (again with macro vision on)

That is really odd. You would think if this is MACROVISION related it would surface like near the beginning of the movie not somewhere 1/3-1/2 way into it...

I just don't see the rationale behind this. However, if no one else can confirm my findings with MACROVISION OFF I will have to try it myself again. It's just a pain to sit through the eighth run on this movie. :P

Thanks for the info. tho!

Anyone know why Xvid RC3 doesn't work with 3.02?? I'm guessing a new player with Xvid RC3 support will be required? Bah hum-bug :(

Can someone point me to step by step instructions for upgrading the firmware in the Norcent/Liteon? I have the player on the way from buy.com and I am a TOTAL newbie when it comes to this.

I just downloaded the liteon firmware 3.2 as instructed. I also have copied the instructions on pressing buttons, unplugging, etc.

Where i am unclear is what to do with the .ZIP file i just downloaded.

Do I burn this to a disc, what kind of disk (DVD, cr-r), using what program (nero, and in what mode), etc.
thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I downloaded the zip file and then unzipped it to a folder. Then go to folder and it will show 2 files, one is a read document for what each firmware version and its function improvements. The other file is the one you want its the firware but is a nero image file, so just click on it and your nero burning software will open up, just click on burn from image to disk and nero will burn you the firmware disk. Then just take disk, then do unplug, disk in, press and hold stop button and plug power plug back on and unit will start to read disk and then start upgradding firmware. Don't touch player while its doing its reading, erasing and writing firmware. You will know when its done, the disk comes out or message indicates finished.

This is what I did and was successful.

Snowlion, your procedure sounds different from this at the Liteon website. Would you or someone else confirm? Thank you.

1. Use a software of nero. to burn the "liteon_v022X.nrg"
file( to be choosed in the list) to a cd as an image file;
2. Then Nero will expand the .nrg file to the proper firmware files during the write process;
3. After that, simply insert the cd in the player, and the rest is automatic.

1. Do NOT turn the power off while updating which will lead the operation un-recoverable! If it accidentally
happened, please contact your local dealer for repairing or a replacement .
2. After updating, please turn it power off once, then turn on again and go into OSD set-up menu and
press key of 2 7 3 0 to check the version number to verify.Or you would check before
starting to update.
--------------------------
I went ahead and followed Liteon's procedure. You just put the disk in, it erases and loads several chunks of firmware, then the disk drawer opens up. Take the disk out, unplug from the rear of the player. Plug back in, the drawer closes, you're done.

Norcent needs the special unplug force update mode to update with LiteON firmware while LiteON LVD-2001 does not need this unplug technique but is as listed on their website. You can burn this on a cheap CD-R as there is no reason to waste a DVD-R on this tiny file.

Right. Even cheaper, I used a cd-rw

If you don't do the press Stop then unplug routine, you will get the message that the firmware is from the incorrect vendor. Remember, by doing the stop then uplug routine, we are in effect "faking" the Norcent to accept the Lite-On firmware update. Might take a few times but it should work.

just flashed my norcent with the unplugging procedure.. on an old cheap (hi-val) 4x only certified CD-RW.. worked with no hiccups.. now it says Lite-On 3.02

however.. ive noticed 720p is very soft.. was this the case with older firmwares? i hope it was the best choice to update to the latest one..
