I have a 34" Philips HDTV (not sure of the model number since I am a work at the moment, put I'll check when I get home) that has recently started to shut off by itself. The red light on the front blinks after this happens and I have to pull the plug out of the wall for 10 seconds or so to get it to work again. Initially this would work every time and the TV would not shut off by itself for weeks. However, lately it had gotten worse. Sometimes pulling the plug out for a while does not work...the TV will not come back on. If I let it sit for a few hours it usually works but it may stay on for 15 minutes or a few hours before it happens again. I was hoping someone here might have suggestions on things I can check before calling for service.
Thanks in advance,
-Mike

From philipsusa.com
Problem Category: Other
Problem: Television, meaning of lights on front panel.
Cause: Red light is blinking.
Solution: Television is probably malfunctioning due to electrostatic discharge.
Try resetting the television by unplugging it from the power outlet for 10 seconds.
There is a "Directions for Use" section on the Philips website, if you search for manuals on your model number. I found this under Other, Meaning of lights on front panel. I had this happen to me once after a power outage. Reading the solution, I would guess a poorly grounded antenna or cable line, or a bad ground on your power line. Are you using a surge protector of some sort? I think some sort of safety circuit is being activated on your television and it is shutting it down to prevent damage. Check your connections and if they are ok, call service.

(I own a Philips 34PW9846)
I am experiencing this as well on my 34" Philips. I purchased in Oct. of 2002. I am checking connections and changing out the surge protector on the power cord. Did anyone ever hear or get a solution? I would like to know before I go to a repair shop with it. Please email me since I don't typically visit this forum.

My sister recently purchased the philips 30PW8402 refurbished off the philips site. It has been doing the same thing, where it shuts off and needs to be plugged back in. She called philips and since it's still under warrantee they sent a technician to the house the other week. The man said that he'd have to replace a part on the tv. i haven't talked to her since then, but in her case there was something malfunctioning on the tv.

Model #'s really help others help you and help other Philip owners keep a heads up for problems. I picked up a 34pw9819 on the last night of a closeout sale at good guys last November. For a grand! Went back to the store the next day and it was back at $1699. Happy to say, not a problem since I opened the box, if you don't count hernias. It did come out of the box with color, brightness, contrast, and sharpness all pegged. Dialed those in below half, and great picture, small CRT geometry issues, but with OTA and D*'s HD/DNS I probably watch less than 2-1/2 hours a week of analog SD. I believe this was one of the better TV's Philips ever made, and don't understand why it was discontinued when it was.

I don't have a red light problem, but I do have a problem with the AV-3 and AV-4 connections for HDTV. They don't work, and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. The Comcast guy came to hook up the HDTV DVR and couldn't get it to work. In typical Comcast fashion, he said he'd be back the next day, but of course never showed.
It seems hard to believe that both of them are faulty, so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions before I call a repairman.
Thanks!
