I have read on here a bit about changing things in the service menu to improve pq, I have The 34HS510 ,what are the preffered settings?

Each persons set is a bit different along with each source being different. Someone could have the exact same set, exact same DVD player, and exact same cables, but have completely different settings.

But I have a table with all of the settings and what they do, so you can judge for yourself using a calibration DVD.

ok, total newbie when it comes to service menus.

when i check the 16:9 pattern, i can see that the whole picture is shifted to the left a little (some of the pattern gets cut off on the left).

i'd like to shift it all to the right.

i have the the sony 34hs420. oddly, it has a vertical adjustment and tilt adjustment in the menu.

i looked at the service menu thread for the XBR model... am i supposed to press the sequence of buttons? simultaneously? is the process the same for the 420?

how do you get into the service menu?

Ok A specific problem i have is the picture seems to be a bit to dark on HD channels , i have the brightness up to 75% ,any way in the service menu to improve this problem, The analog channels are actually a bit to bright on some stations

Maybe I can figure out how to diminish the "black crush" I see on lots of scenes. Also ...is there an "service menu" settings for the audio bass and treble? The regular menu audio settings don't seem to make much difference at all. I have a bass rumble occasionally that I want to get rid of.

I purchased a KV-36XBR800 last year..... I had heard about a problem on the 1080i setting having a 'white band' moving across the picture... Until now I didn't have a HD source, but now that I do, sure enough... there's the problem...
I have read about a fix, but do not know how to use the service menu... Please send me your table, and also info on how to use the service menu (what keys for navigating, etc....)

I now want to calibrate it, and before my calibration DVD arrives, I am wondering if anyone can assist me with slight adjustments.

1. I want to fix the slight “red push” and
2. fix the blacks from being too dark.

I want to know how to obtain into the service menu and make these changes and what are the recommended settings. Thank you.

I had the same issues with my 32HS420 and changed SBRT from 13 to 15 and RYR from 8 to 14. SBRT took care of the black being too black and the SBRT handles the red push issue. This link will explain how to get into the SM, be careful and make sure you write down the settings you change in case you mess up.

Increasing the SBRT will make the black a little lighter. Each TV and model may have different default settings even from the factory. As I stated in an earlier post, I went from 13 to 15 and it helped with my black problem. If you increase the number, the picture should get better.

I have uploaded the sm three times and over 75 people have been able to get it without any problems. Did you try to open it with Microsoft Works or Excel?
I cannot understand why you would make a negative comment about getting the sm, if you have a problem, post it here and I am sure someone will help you out.

I used it for the HS420 and not really sure what model(s) that SM is actually for. So many service menus have been tossed around here can't even recall how I got it.
Compare it to your service menu and if the fields match up, then I guess you will be ok.

Thats odd, youre right though. Excel acts like it doesnt know the file type but opens it anyway but in a weird repeated(top and bottom window same info) format.

I noticed that there's a note above the convergence section about adjusting the magnets to set the horizontal convergence correctly. I read in another thread that horizontal convergence is adjusted in the SM and vertical conv is by magnets. Who's right?

I've managed to get the file that is the subject of this thread. As with all these wild goose chases, the spreadsheet is incomplete, missing descriptions for many items in the Sony service menu. However, it is the most complete I've yet seen (including Andy Ross's spreadsheet) so it's probably worth having.

As pkwjr's links keep expiring I've decided to host the file on my own non-volatile web space for everyone to download as they please.

This file, as originally supplied, is indeed a rather odd .xlr file. On a Macintosh, I had to rename using the more usual extension .xls to even get Microsoft Excel to look at it. Even then, it still came though a bit jumbled. If someone can save out a non-jumbled .xls version on their PC, I'll host that instead since normal Excel files are certainly more universal.

Likewise if you know what any of the blank service items do, please post.

I downloaded your link and it didn't open. I took your suggestion and change the .xlr to xls and it recognize it as excel. BTW, I am using PC with Window xp. Not sure if there are some glithces but I do notice some words are crammed together and hidden under the box...

Could someone describe how the Service Menu looks and how to get out of it? My kids and I have triggered some sort of service/diagnostic mode on our 30HS420 by accident a few times using the remote, and it would be nice to know how to back out of it gracefully. The mode we've triggered blacks out a large box in the middle of the screen. Usually a few letters of text appear in this box which may be the code for whatever command it thinks we entered on the remote. The only way we've managed to clear it is to shut the set off and then on again. Also, how do I undo whatever command I inadvertantly enter in this mode, if the kids and I happen to really mess things up in this mode some day?

The recommended method for exiting Service Mode is, indeed, simply to switch off the TV. Not very graceful, but it works!

Settings you change inadvertently in Service Mode will be reset if you turn off the TV, then unplug it from the mains. To save new settings you have to write them to memory (by hitting Mute then Enter on the remote) so unless you've done this you can always get back your factory settings.

You might want to start putting that remote on a higher shelf. :)

Ayton, that pdf file is for only the xbr. It even shows the settings to be set for twin-view. The xs955 doesnt have twin-view. DO NOT USE ANY OF THESE SETTINGS FOR THE XS955. Here is the one for the xs955.

I think you misread my post. I have a genuine Sony service manual, which covers both the XS955 and XBR960. It is, however, copyrighted to Sony, and over 22MB in size. This is not the PDF I'm posting, for those reasons.

The homebrewed PDF I'm posting is just to help people figure out what many of the parameters do in the service menu, since many Sony models share the same service items. It's useful across most models, including the hs420.
