I have a Yamaha RX750 and a 5.1 speaker system (Mirage 260, etc). I know very little about surround sound modes, and this receiver causes me a great deal of confustion. Essentially, I need to know how to get the best sound out of it for DVD movies and digital cable...I set it on auto, but no matter which disk I put in to the Sony machine, the receiver uses Pro Logic: Surround Enhanced. I can manually switch it, but I'm not sure which modes would be better (and not all the modes come up). I thought Pro Logic was a program for two channel sources that artifically create a surround effect, not something specific for digital sources. Even when I play a DVD I know is encoded in Dolby Digital or DTS, it still indicates it is using Pro Logic. Can anyone give me clear information about setting up the receiver and the meaning/quality of the different surround sound modes (I didn't find the manual to be helpful at all)?

I meant RX-V750 if that matters

Make sure your DVD player is set up correctly. You need to enable bitstream out in the players set up menu. You also need to make sure you have a digital connection between the player and receiver, either coax (RCA cable) or optical (Toslink cable).

I too have the RX-V750. I notice that I have to turn of the volume much higher than I would expect for my small room. I always have to turn the volume up past the halfway point. My usual comfortable listening range on this receiver is around between 60 to 80% (or if you prefer between -40 to -20 in the receiver display). I'm only driving five small speakers (the sub is self-powered). I didn't notice having to turn the volume up this much with the same speakers on an older receiver. The sound is nice, so this isn't a major problem, but I am curious. Since I bought it off of ebay, I wonder if this is a repackaged unit returned for this very reason.
