Over the past couple of months our 27" KV-27FS12 Sony WEGA has been having this problem where the scan lines on bottom 1-2 inches of the screen get all scrunched together and distorted....

it seems to come and go at random, but has been happening more frequently over the last couple of weeks. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Anything I can do to fix it myself? It's out of warranty, so I'm not sure it will be worth it to have it repaired by a professional. But then again what are we going to do with it if I simply replace it with another TV? (no room in the bedroom, and I don't want to sell or give away a TV that could be on the brink of death)

Its a failing electronic component, could be a transistor or a capacitor. Unless you are a TV service tech with the set's service manual, its not a self-fixable task. Would probably cost $100-150 to have it fixed, you have to decide if its worth it or put that money towards a new TV. I got a 10year old Sony 27" set fixed (bad capacitor in the power supply) for $120, but still got a new HDTV - I gave the old Sony (still going strong after the repair) to my folks, it upgraded their 20year old set!

Is that an older model or a newer one? Because I have the 27FS120. Just curious. Sorry to hear about your problem. When the guy at Sears brought the TV out to my car the box was crushed in on one side and it looked like Swiss cheese. I didn't want to take the box but he assured me the set was fine. I was stressed out to the max until I turned on the set.

It's about 4 years old. I believe the one you have is newer.

UPDATE: After about a week this problem went away all on it's own. Over the last 6 months we've seen it crop up a couple of times, but it only lasted a few seconds then went away again. That is until yesterday! Yesterday while watching a football game the entire bottom half of the screen messed up like that for a few seconds, then all the sudden the TV turned itself off. I turned it back on and it recovered for about 5 minutes, then did the same thing again. Ever since then I've been unable to turn the TV on at all. :( It clicks on like normal, but after about 5 second it just turns itself off again. :(

Now I'm faced with the dilemma of either lugging the thing out to be fixed (which could cost hundreds) or just buying a new TV. This one is only 3-4 years old, so I'd hate to just chuck it. However this could be the perfect excuse for me to upgrade to an HDTV.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do?

Sweet show. Funny as hell. Which episode was this?
