In the latest Secrets of Home Theater review of inexpensive DVD players, they decided to include the Lite-on 5001 and evaluate it solely as a player. Their summary opinion was that it was terrible, one of the worst players they had ever tested. It was even beaten by some of the low-end players being sold for under $40.

If some of the clones, such as the Gateway AR-230, are indeed clones, then the same should hold true for them.

They did not test it as a recorder.

When mine worked, it was OK, but it had a lot of issues. When it finally conked, I didn't even bother to seek repair options. I replaced it with the low end Pioneer 210 from Costco. I would avoid the LiteOn 5001. No experience with the 5005.

I have a 5005 and have been very satisfied with it for the price. But I usually use my other DVD player (JVC) for playback of commercial DVDs. Still, I do play a fair amouint of recorded stuff directly from the 5005 and see no problems.
