I just checked my collection with Profiler....50% are horror! :D
What's YOUR favorite horror film?
For gritty gruesomeness...The Texas Chainsaw Masacre (2004) and Maniac (1980) is up there..
kind of wincing, at times.
some favs in no particular order:
The Serpent & the Rainbow
Session 9
VideoDrome
Wrong Turn
The Eye
The Fog (there's just something about Adrienne B...)
Halloween II
and
Night of the Living Dead (both 1968 & 1990)
{my wife is right...I'm twisted} :D

You just reminded me i gotta go buy the Criterion collection edition of Videodrome.
I'm a huge horror fan, some of my favourites of the last few years are Wrong Turn, The Ring, Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake and the Jeepers Creepers movies, i love those italian Zombie flicks and Dario Argento and the Japanese have some interesting horror films.
I prefer a horror which uses atmosphere and darkness and the possibility of something out there to scare me rather than seeing the actual thing although love all sorts of horror.
The best film which has ever been made where you don't see anything but its scary all the same is the original 1963 version of The Haunting ( i actually like the remake and wow does that DTS track sound awesome but the original is probably one of the best horror films ever made )
Some old classics i enjoy are Cat People ( liked remake too ) Night of the Demon, The Mephisto Waltz, The Black Cat and the original Hammer Horror version of Dracula.
Love those classic 1930's horror films and the things they could do with light and darkness and the eerie great camerawork and music which really set a certain mood, count me in as a big time horror film fan.

You gotta try the "first half" of The Eye.
creepy!
even MORE so 'cause it's in Cantonese!:D
the ending was a let down, though.
And Jeepers Creepers gets plenty of replay.....{who IS that cutie??? :D }
oh well, it's guilty pleasure {Bedazzled comes to mind} or a red sports car.

50% horror? That's impressive. According to Guzzlefish I have only 15% horror, but I could have sworn I had a lot more than that. Great list of favorites you have. Might I add...
Dawn of the Dead
Evil Dead trilogy
Suspiria
The Shining
Exorcist (1 & 3)
Creepshow
Jacob's Ladder
The Vanishing (original Dutch version)
House of 1,000 Corpses
Dead Alive
Also, the new Legacy Collections rock! Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man. I can't wait until the Invisible Man set comes out on 10/19. Hopefully we'll see a Mummy set sometime too.
I'm a pretty big Slasher movie fan, more than real horror. I love all of the Friday movies (except Jason goes to Hell, that was just bad), most of the Halloweens and Nightmare movies. I saw Freddy vs Jason twice on opening day, though it was more camp than horror.
I can't forget classics like Silent Night Deadly Night or Slumber Party Masacre either.
I also really liked the Chainsaw remake, even though most give it pretty bad reviews, it actually made me jump several times.
And The Ring scared the crap out of me for some reason, I have to still see the japenses version too but haven't got around to it

CandyMan is a fabulous atmospheric chiller, trust me its not a mistake and is a great horror flick.
I love They Live but the problem with that film is its budget was just too cheap to actually fulfill its premise, a bigger budget would have made it a better film.
Society has some interesting bits to it and is really a satire on eighties living, the girl in it is gorgeousssssssssssss ( the brunette one )

I just got CandyMan SE
I tried, I truly tried to get through to the end, but, kept saying to myself, will this EVER end.....
Well, the beer ended before the movie.......so, I only got to see three fourths...
but, MAN OH MAN, it just seemed to drag on forever without keeping me involved.
If the ending makes up for it [I'll try again tonight} maybe so, I just thought it was a definate yawner...:o
They Live was too campy for me....{wasn't it supposed to be??? Please don't tell me that was a serious effort??:eek: }
cheers! :D

The up close and personal shotgun blast to the head in Maniac [Tom Savini cameo, by the way} was one of the best effects of his career, in my opinion....puts to shame the one in Dawn of the Dead.....that was bad.
Jeepers Creepers is among my favs. Good presentation, the truck chase scene, belivable sister/brother relationship...good dialogue,etc..
Though not horror, and, only filmed in 1:33, a really good film to keep you glued to the film/set/screen is Duel.
What a fantastic film.....I'd say it's boderline horror......it grips at your insides like not many a film.

The remake of TCM pales in comparison to the original, IMO.
The original Halloween, Romero's triolgy, first couple Hellraisers, the original TCM are timeless classics. Session 9 is an excellent recent movie that is different than a lot of others. My favorite "newer" movies are House of a 1000 Corpses and Dawn of the Dead (2004).

I used to love horror. I was never scared, just found them all fun. Reanimator, HellRaiser, Omen, etc. But after The Ring, I have never watched any horror movies, it really scared me, don't know why. Always wanted to watch The Eye but chicken out at the last minute... I feel like I'm losing one of my favorite hobbies - watching horror films. Weird.

MidLife,
I'm surprised to see "Frailty" on your list of mistakes. I found it to somehow come off as very real and absolutely brutal. It actually left me shaken--a very effective and disturbing flick. Why didn't you like it?
BTW, I like all of your "faves" too. :)

I think the B&W film clip in the Ring to be uncomfortably creepy.
Something about it...
Set the edginess straightaway! :D
The creepyness left The Eye towrds the end, I thought, that kinda took you out of the element that the first of the movie put you in.
Anyway, that's hjow I remember it.
I liked In the Mouth of Madness, particulary the bycycle rider, but, I got bashed for saying I liked that movie before....:D
oh well, such is the Internet! :D
I've watched horror films for over thirty years...and the first I saw was "Mark of the Devil". A double feature with "The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant" ! :D
They handed out "barf bags" at the theater! :D
I'm not sure what horror film had the greatest impact. Perhaps Exorcist, when I saw it in the theater.....ground-breaking elements in that one, for sure.
But, replay value is important in this genre too, and some of the John Carpenter stuff, his serious efforts, seem to get some replay on DVD.
And Dario Argento too, but, you have to be in that "Dario" mood for it to work.

Frailty.....on second thought, the ending seemed to be quite effective.
I just got a little to much "religion" for sake of a better word, out of it.
Same thing with Signs.
Made me uncomfortable in an unenjoyable way< I expect with all that "killing for God" kinda stuff.
I don't know.
"Soul Survivours" .!

However, The Hills Have Eyes has some redeeming qualities when stacked up against The Last House on the Left.
I forget if Last House was Craven....but, I got it to complete a collection, same with The Hills Have eyes, I forget who that director series belonged to.
But, TLHOTL was bad. I guess if you were stoned [as were the filmakers and actors, I expect were too] you might like it.

Last House on the Left is Craven's first film that he wrote. Shoe string budget. Commentary track is great. To me, it's so "bad" that it's good. :) The Hills Have Eyes is another cult favorite of mine.

They Live is a good afternoon movie. The special effects are a bit lacking but it has an interesting story. Not a horror flick in my book.
Candyman on the other hand was a complete bore. Not scary at all, and as a previous post stated, it went on and on and on.
Anyway, I'd have to say the scariest would be The Amityville Horror or maybe the Evil Dead. All time favorite I must say is The Shining.

I totally agree with you. I believe the best horror flicks are those which play with our minds, like scary images/things that gets implanted in our brain during childhood. These movies will tempt you to imagine those scary stuff, but the fact that you never see it makes it even more scarier. Because what we experience differs, what scares us now will differ among different people. Horror flicks with ugly stuff jumping out in your face just doesn't work for me.
With that being said, "Blair Witch Project" gave me a pretty good scare, eventhough there are many people who doesn't agree this movie is anywhere scary. I still have thoughts about the movie whenever I am in a forest like surrounding, and I haven't been on any camping trips since then. That ending totally raised my goosebumps.
Black and white footages seems to do a good job of scaring me...

I actually liked The People Under the Stairs . Granted, the main characters are kids, so it might be hard for some to put themselves in the moment in the film--but I found it quite creepy and it sort of tapped into the "inner child". It's no masterpiece, but I liked it.
I'm surprised Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetery Man is the silly American title) hasn't been mentioned. It's my favorite Zombie film, has an awesome twist ending, and even has the incomparable Anna Falchi...
Twins of Evil is my favorite Hammer vampire movie. The angle of having twins to deal with just complicates the usual Hammer processes of vampire detection...
One of my fave 80's slasher flicks was Sleepaway Camp --it seemed to have more dark humor and be way more twisted because of all the gender issues. Creepy...
As for atmospheric horror where it's all about the suspense not gore--nothing beats The Changeling . The currently-first IMDB review talks about how overrated it is, but most people seem to have a visceral reaction to the story's suspense. Overrated, maybe--but I cant think of another horror/suspense film that created those kind of chills with so little shown.

it's not overrated.
its one of the greats.
one of the only movie with gore effects that i still hold a high opinion of is Dawn Of The Dead. the slasher stuff never worked for me- the formula i find numbing.
saw Mario Bavas Black Sunday for the first time a few weeks ago.
not really what i was expecting although i appreciated the atmosphere he conjured up.
i'm looking forward to checking out more of his work.

the above list nearly mirrors some of my collection.
I really tried to do CandyMan, but, just couldn't do it. Too slow.
The changeling is in my collection, but, I think the far better performance for GCS was in Exorcist 3.
Amityville Horror was too tame for me.
I have yet to see the comedy "Bad Taste" that I bought along with Videodrome. The teenage cashier said, "ah yes, two classics"!
Evil Dead is a cult favorite of mine, I fisrt rented it on BetaMax. I am NOT a fan of Army of Darkness, though. I am too old for that cult following.
I have yet to have a H film overwhelme me, but, I seem to have found a niche in Carpenter stuff, when he was really trying and not simply being a behind the scenes "producer"
He and Debra Hill did some fine work in their day.
I am simply enoying "Th13rnteen Ghosts" as we speak, and, OH, what eye candy it is.......I like good video presentations.
Out of all my films, Jeepers Creepers, The Hills Have Eyes and Prince of Darkness get some replays.....along with TCM, Cube and Resident Evil if I'm in THAT mood.
Keep 'em coming, folks! :D

Darnit! I got all the way to the second page and hadn't seen "The Changeling" mentioned. But a few people beat me to it.
If anyone has NOT seen "The Changeling" I'd recommend it. It's very creepy. But **NOTE** It's not a slasher, gimmicky fast-moving popcorn flick (NOT that there's anything wrong with those either, I like those, too).
The Changeling is a "turn-off-all-the-lights" and watch-it-by-yourself type movie. One reccommendation: watch it in its entirety the whole way through, it's a lot more effective that way.

In the "slasher" vein, "Satan's Blade" was rather notorious, but without much storyline.
And "The Toolbox Murders" was infamous because it appeared on 60 Minutes (the Kelly Nichols nailgun scene) as an expose of sex and violence in the movies.

I watched it Saturday. The movie had some decent "gore", but like other "drive-in" horror movies it was kinda "cheesy" - which is ok. I don't think it will it will ever evolve to cult status like Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Toolbox is nowhere near that good) or Wes Craven's early movies. It's worth a rental for you I would guess.

Love many of these movies. In fact, one of my favorite lines in a movie was in Hellraiser II. Remember how the stepmother was 'bad' in the first movie, but was 'empowered' in the second movie? She surprises her daughter in the second movie, her daughter makes a move against her, and she knocks her across the room. She them looks at her and says,
"I used to be the wicked stepmother, BUT NOW I AM THE EVIL QUEEN!!"
Nothing like perverting a Disney reference in a horror movie for effect.
