View Full Version : Is the 47ai nearly as good as the 59avi in sound and video? / Only $800 budget

Id like to try a 59avi but I would have a hard time shelling out $1200 for one, I might be able to get one for $1100 if I drive to Seattle.
But anyways how does the older 47ai compare as far as image and sound quality go? Is it night and day or? How about the 45a?
Just to name a few players I have had recently:
Denon DVD-2200
Pioneer 563a
Panasonic RP-62 x 2
Denon DVD-1600 x 2
Ive sold everything and I currently am using my second RP-62 , picked it up off Ebay for $35 ...really its quite satisfactory , even though it has a few minor issues overall its at least 95% of what the DVD-2200 was.
Ive considered Denon's new units but really the only one that may fit my needs is the 2900.
Basically I have to keep my cap @ $700-$800ish so the 59avi and 3910 are out of my grasp.
ideas, thoughs? thanks
:)
How recently did the 59 replace the 47?

I've seen the 59AVi for as low as $900. You just need to look around a little bit more. :)
In fact ... Go to ebay, and look at the completed auctions. A brand new one *didn't* sell for $749. Item # 5715860373.

To me one of the big issues is DVI or HDMI out for the DVD player. Until I had a projector that could take a pure digital signal, I didn't see the big deal. But, man does it make a difference in PQ w/o any signal conversation/. So even though you may not have a TV or FP that has DVI or HDMI input, if you are going to spend the money on a DVD player, I would make it a priority.

Video-wise, the 47ai has the common/obvious CUE bug.

That's nice, but...no warranty or anything else, right? Kind of a gamble to buy it off of Ebay like that.. ain't it? ;)

So besides this is the 47ai almost as good as the 59avi? , I have zero need for the Ilink.

From the sound of it, the Denon 2900 would fit your needs. I am very happy with mine and have not had any trouble (other than 1 DVD not playing, see another thread). Very satisfied with the audio and PQ. Build quality seems much better than the pioneer elite units in the same price range...

James,
The DV-47Ai is not even close to the 59AVi. And I mean visuals and sound.

I am heading to Seattle tomorrow, I can get a 59avi for $1100 + tx ...Id really like to see if I can get it for $1100 OTD.
Id like to buy from an authorized dealer if I am going to drop this much on a player. I mean what is a few hundred more if your already spending $1000?
The salesguy I talked to at Magnolia Hi-Fi thought the 59avi was the best player they sold, even better than the Denon 5900 by a small margin.
We will see what happens tomorrow. :-)

James- How much is the warranty worth to you? ;)
The $900 units were also on ebay. Just because it's on ebay, doesn't automatically mean they don't have the warranty though. Never hurts to ask. :)
This was posted here a few months ago, but someone got a 59AVi from an authorized dealer for closer to $800. Bottom line, is that the markup on this player is higher than most. *You *should* have no problem getting one for the price you want.
The 47ai also has an inferior deinterlacer compared to the 59AVi. But the 59AVi's layer change delay is a slight bit worse than the 47ai's.

Kevin, I am a pretty savvy shopper for the most part and know how to work it.
I see what you mean.. since the 59avi is going for under a grand at several places over the internet that means used ones will be in the $700-$800 range ...although there is not many showing up now..plus winter is coming..which means hi-fi stuff fetches more money because the demand goes up.
Lets just say I won a mint used one on Ebay for $850 shipped vs a new one for $1100 + tx ($1200)= IMO $350 difference is not a big deal for a component like this.
I generally like to save 50% to make Ebay purchases worthwhile...in other words if 59avi's were going for $500 then that is the route I would go.
For example my Parasound 2003 that I won on Ebay for ..this is an item that I cannot even buy new , furthermore I got it for ~75% less than
what it sold for when new.
Also my Aragon Soundstage I won on Ebay...it sold for $4000 when new, I saved 75% on it as well.

And actually the demand is so high for the 59avi that that ONE mint used one that sold for $825 was gone in 2 minutes. ;)
US $825.00

Based on the fact it was a buy it now auction id say that it will be a long time before these go for under $800 on a regular basis on Ebay.
After January would probably be about the time they begin to trickle into Ebay for under $800.
Anyhow so that is why I was looking at a 47ai, because right now it can be had on the cheap but if its not nearly as good as the 59avi forget it then.. I want the flagship unit.
So what is the progessive chip being used in the 59avi?
Also I should mention that I dont have a DVI input on my projector, id be using the component outputs for progressive scan. ..I want to make sure that I am going to get the awesome picture quality you guys are talking about over component outputs as well.
How can you guys see the chroma bug? I can't see it in the 47ai?

Yes, once you know what to look for, you will see it all the time. :) I now see it all the freaking time from Comcast cable!
