Who moved my cheese?

Greetings, TimeShifter.

Shall we play a game?

1. Tic-Tac-Toe
2. Snake
3. Global Thermonuclear War

Enter choice:

116 Technical services menu, if last zone was 611. Allows you to change the country and Replay Zone Prefix.

243 Utillity menu

1 – Exit 11 – Show GF Fonts
2 - Clear Channel Guide 12 – Show resource Bitmaps
3 - Toggle Clock 13 – Rebuild Bitmaps
4 - Toggle CPU Meter 14 – Toggle Bitrate Meter
5 - Toggle Mem Meter 15 – Toggle Position Meter
6 - Toggle Network Meter
7 - Net Connect
8 - Refresh Partition
9 - Graphic Test
10 - Show Color Palette
Claw Foot Portal

What can you type in the Claw Foot Portal?

DISABLE DISK SPINDOWN Keeps drives from spining down when unit is turned off
ENABLE DISK SPINDOWN Truns it back on (default)
JOSHUA War Games mode (enter with 111 zones)
JULIED Displays the message "Spencer loves Julie"
PLAY CONTINUOUSLY Will add a Play Continuously menu item to your Playback Options allows looped play of the show.
ME LIKE COOKIES Shows you a short hidden message
MODESTO GIRL Will make all your red circles look like hearts instead. This happens automatically on Valentine's Day automatically
SPORTSGUARD OFF Enables a global padding feature (in default record options) to extend all sports recordings
SPORTSGUARD ON Turns it back (default)
TIC TAC Same as JOSHUA
SNAPSHOT - Toggles Snapshot mode
Response "Snapshots ON - hit RECORD to take a video snapshot"
This takes a snapshot of the current video (minus any OSD). The resulting .BMP is placed in your Photo parition, under the /Snapshot folder. Apparently, ReplayTV's photo slideshow does not support bitmaps, so you will have to use DVArchive 2.1+ or QVision to view these snapshots.

SCREENSHOT - Toggles Screenshot mode
Response "Screenshots ON - hit RECORD to take an OSD screenshot"
This takes a screenshot of the currently visible OSD only, no video. Same.

Type 'THEME PRIORITY' into the clawfoot portal and you can prioritize theme recordings from 1 (highest) to 99 (lowest). This is good for when you have multiple theme recordings that may come up at the same time - you can control which show gets recorded.

255 Start PPV timer, disabled w/o PPV support

382 Restore Factory Settings (was 777 zones)

Reboots the machine.

777-Replay Zone
Demo mode (disabled on home machines) and a button to Restore Factory Settings which clears the Replay Guide, reboots, restores the welcome message and requires you to go through setup again.

49152-Zones
When entered at the initial Quick Startup screen will exit the setup and let you at least use the unit as an expensive VCR.

Jump around within a Replay Show
When watching a Replay Show, you can enter the number of minutes you want to jump to and then the Jump button to jump to a specific location in a program. For example 1-0-Jump takes you 10 minutes into the program.

You can also jump forward or backward by a specific number of minutes by entering the number followed by Quick Skip or Instant Replay. For example, 3-Quick Skip moves you forward 3 minutes (the length of most commercial breaks!).

while attemtping to fine tune a 5040 remote, I accidentally, in passing, generated a screen that displayed a list of the Dish network channels. How did I do this?

Some of the ones you are saying are for showstoppers only.

You can find similar information in the FAQ here, or molehill. or try my own unpopular thread where I try to compile clawfoot portal, zone commands, and remote key shortcuts info for 5xxx Replays.

It's sloppy, but as far as I know, it's the most complete cut and paste compilation to date.

Never heard of this one...care to elaborate. Is this applicable to 5xxx series machines?

I know with certainty it does not work on the 50XX/55XX series of ReplayTVs and would guess it was no longer useful once the concept of activation was introduced into the ReplayTV software (45XX series).

The ReplayTV FAQ says -

jleavens writes: There has been some talk about using 49152-Zones. This simply skips the Setup process. It does not bypass activation.

That's the old bail-out code associated with the initial release of the 4500's and the early build/releases of S/W version 4 at the time. It'll never do jack-diddley-squat for you, because it doesn't exist anymore... (had vanished either before V4.3 came out, or when 4.3 came out - don't recall)

AFAIK it's one of the only things to ever actually be removed from the S/W as the versions were updated...

Based on the increased length, randomness and complexity of the code along with the tight restriction on "when/what screen" it would work along with what it did- and that it's supposedly long gone, I'm guessing it was an internal use only code that leaked or got discovered - so sure, the 4500's were really freaking expensive when they came out, but that code was a $250-off the cost of the lifetime subscription coupon. Hence, why it no longer exists...

I've never been associated w/ ReplayTV in a business or employee/contractor fashion - so all of the above came from what I remember reading on the old Replay Twiki site - except the paragraph immediately proceeding this one, which is just my thoughts/opinion on what might be some answers to all of the Grey area and holes that seem to surround this one particular zone code.

My favorite "trick" that I never realized was while playing a program pressing Play will switch to slow-mo playback. Helpful for sports replays. =)

Jeff, since you've probably forgotten more than the rest of us collectively know about the MPEG encoder/decoder chipsets, CPUs and such found inside these puppies - is it a proper handling of negative numbers or some other issue that would explain the complete & total absense of such features as slow-mo reversed playback and frame-step backwards? Or was it just the "decision not to include" (just like why the replaytv's lack any way for the adjustment of playback contrast/brightness)?

This is an unavoidable consequence of using the MPEG encoding. I'm not going to go into details but a "previous frame" just doesn't exist, you'd have to go back and back to the initial frame in a GOP and then reconstruct frames in the forward direction until you reached the desired "previous frame." While doable, this would require computational powers beyond the capabilities of the Replay's hardware.

Agree it's do-able, just not that simple.

The ability to change the output settings.... that should be easy.

So what we see when you do a high-speed rewind is actually a "forward playback" of frame we already passed? Or are we just seeing the I/P frame - I'm not looking to get the feature added (be nice though) nor a in-depth explanation (actually, I lie, I am interested in the long explanation, but agree with you and feel it doen't belong here.).

My favorite shortcuts are the guide nav shortcuts. Off the top of my head:

Replay Guide:

IR/QS changes Replays if you have other networked units

FF/REW changes categories (perfect for checking the progress of a show in the Received category, then returning to the same place in All Shows)

numbers jump you to the place in the alphabetical channel list that corresponds roughly to the letters on a telephone keypad.

JUMP switches from a show to a category to the Replay name (the last only if you have other networked units)

Channel +/- jumps one screen up/down

Channel Guide:

number + IR/QS jumps back/forward that many hours

FF/REW jumps back/forward 12 hours

number + FF/REW jumps back/forward that many days

Device code question: There are lots of posts here about how to use a Replay remote to control other equipment. I'm interested in the reverse - I have a Toshiba on order that comes with a remote that supports a half dozen other devices, eg vcr, audio, cable and satellite boxes. It includes setup codes for these gadgets. But no info on how it can operate a Replay (actually, in my case, a Showstopper). Doesn anyone know what code to tell a Toshiba?

I was playing around with FF & FR recently and on FR it looked like it would jump back a bit play a few frames forward then repeat.
