About as functional as the Firewire port on the early units.

I'm kinda curious now. I wonder if the port even gets powered? I have seen all sorts of gadgets that can get their power from a USB port (radios, lights, fake fish aquarium, cell phone charger, etc.) and wonder if I could power them from my RTV ;)

Nope, not powered.

While the USB port on a 5xxx isn't normally powered, it can be with the correct shell commands.

Before anyone gets too excited, be aware that this still doesn't actually allow one to use wireless USB adapters. I have tested this using one of the models listed in an old file on the RTV filesystem that lists "supported" adapters. It appears that the support was never completely added (which explains why USB has never been turned on by DNNA).

Thus, the only real use for this would be for powering small fans, lights, etc. that connect via USB. And, just to head off the inevitable question, no, it isn't going to be feasible for anyone outside of DNNA to add wireless USB support (and that is not likely to happen).

WOOHOO! Now I'm going to have to learn about shellcommands so that I can charge my phone and run a fake fish aquarium from my RTV!!

Thanks j.m.!!!

The fan idea isn't a bad one, however.

Here 'ya go...

The fan's are adjustable... For $30...

I've seen people spend alot more to get some additional cooling to their unit.

I see the powering of the USB port a great/welcomed possibility. I had the thought of using a laptop cooler as mention before to supplement the cooling of my Replay unit (no such thing as too much airflow) when I first got my unit.

so my question is about shell commands and what they are/ how to to use.

Or the question others might want to know....

What are the steps to allow a USB powered Laptop cooler to be run via the USB port on a replay unit.

Search the forum for WiRNS and GetShellCommands. As you will see, shell commands have been most frequently discussed in the context of activating CA/IVS on a 55xx.

Cool....now I can get some USB laptop coolers to keep my OTA HDTV tuners cool....had one lockup already....

Meanwhile, I have one of my ReplayTVs powering a USB christmas tree :D

Just got a "portable" wireless device yesterday that I'm successfully using as wireless adaptor for my ReplayTV 5040.

It is not a typical Wireless Bridge or Wireless Gaming adaptor (which is still a Bridge), but is a DLink DWL-G730AP (http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DWL%2DG730AP). It is really small, supports USB power, and has 3 modes:

-Access Point
-Router
-Client Access <== the important one, since it really a bridge, taking RJ45 input from network cable connected to my Replay RJ45 port.

So now I have a very, very small Wireless-G Adaptor for my ReplayTV that works off of USB Power -- read (a) simplicity and (b) less power-cable clutter in my entertainment center... :)

I'm already using it with the DC-adaptor, now I just have to get WiRNS running and enable the USB port!

Just wanted to share.

I guess USB laptop coolers aren't designed to run 24/7...because I just had a second one fail....

I'm curious, any of you used other small-profile wireless adaptors w/ usb-power that have worked well w/ your ReplayTVs?

I'm using an ASUS WL-330 Pocket AP/Bridge and it works great... as long as the power stays on. I got the USB power to work and was excited about it until I found that I have to re-enable the USB power once every couple of days. Is there any way to get it to stay on permanently without running a full-time WiRNS service?

Actually get a few 5040's replace some of the blue lights with green and red lights and you could have the glow of a christmas tree.
