View Full Version : SA8000 box shutting down nightly

I have a Scientific Atlanta 8000 from Charter. The recent software update has made it shut down between 1 and 6 am, which really bites if I have something set to record on the RTV between those hours or if I go on vacation since the RTV doesn't know that the box is off and has no way to turn it back on. So if I'm on vacation it will shut off that first night and not turn back on and I'll miss everything. Major suck!

It comes up with a message at these times telling you that the box is shutting down and to press a button on the remote if you're actually watching something at this ungodly hour and would like to continue doing so. From what I understand other SA boxes have the same power saver "feature", but not in my area. And there is a software update on the way.

In the meantime I have set a 1 min manual recording at 1:11am, 3:11am and 5:11am and miracle, my box was still powered on this morning!

Just thought I'd pass this along to anyone else having this problem. Hope it helps.

Matt-

The 4200 series box has the option to power on when it receives an IR signal. For example, if Cablevision shuts off the box, when the box receives the channel change request from the RTV IR blaster, the box powers on! I am not sure if this option is available in the 8000 series.

Yeah, unfortunately we don't have 4200 series boxes in this area (I work for the cable co, so I know.) From what I've been told they will be sending out an update within the next few weeks which will add that feature or something similar to it.

But that doesn't help me going on vacation next week. Luckily my little programming thing seems to work for now. I just hope they don't implement the change while I'm away and end up rebooting my box.

I had read somewhere else where someone was comparing it to having a pet when you're away on vacation. "Can you please feed the cat, check the mail, and make sure my cable box is on . . ." ;)

Upgrade your SA 8000HD to a SA 8300HD. See: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=450783

The SA 8300HD also POWERS OFF, at night...
Here is a link, and I modified a remote and a relay to solve my problem.
Except for the re-boots, but they seem to occure after 6am, and I'm there for that.
