Hi: Just bought a Toshiba 36hf73 new from Costco. Standard cable looks great on this set, and for $999 I hope it was a good price. Problem is, the flat screen reflects like a mirror during the day, and I'd like to add a glare filter. Two approaches I've seen avaialbe are either a spray-on coating that claims to work very well, but reduces optical clarity by 3%...I don't know if that would be noticeable or not, and a second choice is a physical anti-glare screen mounted over the front of the tube itself. Any feedback or suggestions would be Greatly appreciated.
Also, any comments from experienced 36hf73 owners on any observations would be great. I know set is at least one generation old, but it fits into a custom wall unit with no spare room on the sides and 5/8th of an inch on top, so other sets I looked at would not quite fit.
Thanks for any input.....

Protect clarity, buy curtains that cut down glare...

anti glare = reduces contrast ratio
no anti-glare = better contrast ratio and dynamic but reflective.
What to do? Control room lightinng. Place the tv in front of the curtain not behind and close the curtain when it shiny. No anti glare gives out better picture quality than anti glare.

ScottRT,
Just bought a Teleview Anti-Glare screen to velcro onto my Sony 4:3 monitor. Will post results next week.
Decided not to go with spray on. Some of us do NOT have the option to place entertainment in a secluded dark area so curtains, etc. not an option.

Received my "Teleview" anti-glare screen today and installed it tonight onto my Sony 40XBR800. It is a piece of clear plastic that looks rough on one side and smooth on the other side.
It worked! I no longer have to turn off the lights by the sofa to avoid seeing myself in the screen during dark viewing moments. It is recommended that one boosts the contrast and brightness so I set the monitor to display Vivid.
This weekend is the big test. Can we watch during the day when there is hugh reflected light coming from eight windows bouncing off our white walls? Report when I can see the results myself.

I eagerly await your follow-up on the products effectiveness against that window glare...I'm in the same predicament!

ScottRT,
Yeah, me too. By the way, the fellow who I ordered the screen is in Healdsburg, CA.
The screen does reduce the sharpness a touch but only if you do a side by side comparison. Also, the screen cuts down the peripheral viewing angle.

Scott,
OK, after a few days use, here are the pros/cons of the Teleview anti-glare screen. Use it over a Sony 40XBR800.
Issue: We live in a loft with eight windows and N/S/W exposures. No curtains, white walls. With a CRT, you can see yourself in the screen all day long. During the day, when direct light enters, no way to watch anything. At night, must turn off lights to cut reflection. Not great but am not going to put up curtains or blinds either.
Solution: Bought the Teleview anti-glare screen. The size was confirmed via email by supplier to ensure best fit. The screen is attached with black velcro on sides. Perfect because border around Sony is black. The surface on one side is smooth, on the outer side it looks like roughed up plastic. Reminded me of the screens on rear projection televisions. Must adjust brightness and contrast after installing.
Pros: Can now view Sony all hours of day without a noticable glare issue. Largely invisible unless you are looking for it. Removable.
Cons: Does reduce sharpness a touch. Definitely reduces field of view, best viewed dead on. Reduces brightness. When telly off, screen shows up as dull grey.
Conclusion: It works. Am keeping it. Happy I bought it vs. sprayon. So if you do not have a luxury of a non-glare entertainment room or just want to enjoy light and the view, this is a good solution to the glare problem.
