View Full Version : SACD/DVD-A release wish list

I've just gotten into enjoying surround-sound music formats a short time ago and I find myself constantly looking for new titles released with this new technology. Needless to say, I'm a little disappointed with the number of choices available. So, I would like to start a thread asking folks for input on what artists, albums and/or titles they would support if released in either Hi-Rez or Multi-channel. I vote for:

Supertramp - Crime of the Century

Pink Floyd - The Wall

Beatles - Abbey Road

. . . mostly because of their classic status and mastery of sound when recorded.

Any other thoughts?

Beatles and (additional) Pink Floyd are the biggies when it comes to demand for hi-rez, 5.1 treatment. (Although I think Sgt. Pepper would benefit more from 5.1 than Abbey Road would.)

I like your addition of "Crime of the Century". A well-recorded classic album.

I'd also like to see Kansas - "Leftoverture". There is enough going on that giving each instrument more "space" could enhance the album without damaging the original "feel".

Any Genesis from Foxtrot to Duke would be great in 5.1 hi-res. I'll second the Supertramp request, and include Crisis, What Crisis and Breakfast in America in the list. I wouldn't mind hearing some other Yes albums in hi-res m/c.

More to come as I think of them.

Fleetwood Mac--self titled

mrtanner -

I concur with your addition of Sgt. Pepper.

How about anything from either "The Cars" or Ric Ocasek? "This Side of Paradise" has always been in my top 10.

If my wish list could only include two albums; it would be sgt. Pepper and the Wall.

Jimi Hendrix's 3 studio albums cry out for a multi-channel remix!

Jimi was experimenting with out of phase effects, panning instruments across the soundfield and more.

Absolutely, especially Electric Ladyland and Axis: Bold As Love, those two would sound great with a multi-channel mix.

Janis Joplin might sound good in hi-rez.

Heck - gimme any good record (other than classical). Not that classical is bad, it's just I don't listen to that stuff anymore. Ironically, that's what they are releasing in spades. I guess the thought is that the baby boomers will pay...

Just ordered I Robot (on the expensive side too...) Didn't know it was 2 Ch....

Same thing happened to me on first SACDs. How do you tell if it's multi Ch??? I look through the listings, but most don't seem to indicate/confirm its 5.1 versus hi res stereo.

Also, can I somehow get my sub in the mix with my mains when listening to stereo SACD/DVD-A. Seems a shame not to get the kick out of my sub (SVS - PB2).

Thanks,
Jeff

If your player's speakers settings are set to SMALL and the sub to ON, you should still get the sub in the mix (though not all players will do this with two channel hi-res). To test, just play the disc and turn off your sub. When you turn it back on, you'll know.

I'd like to see in Multichannel:
Daft Punk - Discovery
Three Doors Down - The Better Life
More Who and The Floyd

In Hi-Res:
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms & Making Movies
Madonna - Immaculate Collection
G'N'R - Appetite or Greatest Hits
RATM - Renegades (Just to see if they can beat the CD)
Beatles - One or even better.. the Whole Catalogue

Imagine if Lennon and McCartney had Hi-Rez MC available to them?

EVERYONE would have these formats at the top of their lists. Every other up-and-coming artist would be writing for these formats also.

What's missing isn't promotion...it's lack of talent to write and produce FOR the format.

I like re-releases (just picked up Sir EJ's 'Madman Across The Water'...excellent), and I like guys like Spyro Gyra who've written for surround, and the Heads Up label who have great surround mix engineers like Mike Bishop, but...there's a BIG difference between exploring the possibilities offered by surround mixing and the HUGE dynamic headroom difference of Hi-Rez and simply re-mixing a master tape that was written for stereo with it's much, much lower saturation point and much more limited playback systems of the day.

It's the MP-3 generation of artists that dissapoints me the most. I really expected the young artists to jump at the chance to experiment with Hi-Rez 5.1 surround...and they simply haven't.

I picked up a copy of the SACD disc of Train, a band I like in the newer generation of bands, and it is really just awful, production-wise.

Maybe it's the labels who are dictating what a new band can or can't do, based on the costs to produce a MC disc, but I really expected to see a few Rebels pop up and kick some tail.

I still think that this is what's holding back the popularity of the Hi-Rez formats. Re-hashing 30 year old tapes that have bee rotting on some shelf is OK, and should be a part of these new formats, but I REALLY expected to hear some great NEW stuff, and, alas, it just ain't there.

Great sub!

Almost all DVD-A I've come across are multi-channel with the exception of Alan Parsons (I Robot and Turn of a Friendly Card and Pete Townsend (Who Came First).

Here is a good site for checking if an SACD is stereo or MCH - sa-cd.net Otherwise you need to read the fine print on the package. If an SACD doesn't say MCH - it's probably not.

You have to read reviews to see if the multichannel is used well. For instance the "Live From the Front Row" series of DVD-As and the George Harrison "Live In Japan" SACD seem to simply be 2-channel masters with a fake reverb added to the rears.

Most receivers will not redirect the input from the 6-channel analog inputs to a sub. They tend to simply be "pass through". However, if you took the FL and FR outputs of your player and connected them to a CD or AUX input, you could do any processing your receiver has including using the sub and matrixed 5.1 sound.

One of the reasons I purchased the universal player I did (Onkyo) was that it has a second set of FL and FR outputs that I connected to my CD in. This was I can include my sub on two-channel recordings and hear the discrete 5.1 on the surround recordings without having to touch the cables. I simply change from "Direct Input" to "CD" on my receiver.

Good thinking, never thought my way through that....

Now I have to go open up the box on my new multi - Pioneer 578-A that arrived about 2 hours ago - pretty sure (at that price) I'll be switching cables!

Jeff

I have had the same problem with the sub and stereo sacd, and have used the extra analog cd input of my receiver to get around it but I'm still confused as to why there is no sub in stereo thru the external 6 channel inputs. This might be a stupid question and I'm missing something very obvious, but heres my question:if I have my speakers set to small in my player, shouldn't the player be redirecting everything below the crossover point to the rec.lfe input? So the sub would get a signal even in stereo?I've racked my brain trying to figure this out so if anyone has an answer please share it with me!

It is player dependent. Some players are programmed to apply bass management to MCH tracks only, while others work like a receiver's bass management: either on for all settings (save analogue bypass) or off. You're right, it should work the way you describe but SHOULD and DO are often not the same. Your best bet is to find a bass heavy track in stereo on SACD or DVD-A and play it with the sub turned off. If turning on the sub gives you more bass, then your player is applying bass management to two channel recordings. If not, then its bass management only works on MCH tracks. I haven't tried my player set to SMALL as I use my receiver's bass management, but I'll try it out and report back. I do know that it won't pass hi-res through the extra pair of stereo RCA outputs, so the solution described by others above to get the sub active in stereo via the extra outputs doesn't work for me. Again, that's player dependent. (and people wonder why it's so difficult to get into hi-res--if people who care enough to seek out forums like this can't easily figure it out, imagine the average consumer  ).

Well then, you are in luck. . .sound engineer, producer, etc. Nick Davis, a longtime member of the Genesis extended family, has finished 5.1 work on the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway in SACD format, but its release is being delayed due to required changes from the band members, especially Peter (surprise, surprise). Trick of the Tail is also completed, again awaiting final approval.

Though I do have to contest. . .ALL of the Genesis albums would be well-served if remastered in 5.1, of the ones you left out. . .especially We Can't Dance. Either way, the plan is to have all albums remixed as Nick can get to them.

Yes, Genesis is my favorite band. ;)

My wish list? Well, I could name a hundred no problem, but I would especially like to see Bruce Hornsby get onto the 5.1 bandwagon, his albums would benefit tremendously from the surround treatment, as well as Phil Collins, if for no other reason because he's numero uno on my favorite musician list. His Disney soundtracks would especially benefit from the mixing.

I'll echo the Genesis suggestions (and rejoice at the prospect of "Lamb Lies" and "Trick of the Tail"), U2's "Unforgettable Fire" (no doubt their masterpiece), anything Radiohead (particularly "Kid A" & "Amnesiac"), Pink Floyd's "Animals" (my "desert island" album) and obviously "The Wall" (outrageous on DVD!), damn near anything by the Beatles (can't go wrong there!), The Doves (hmmm...where's the new album guys?), Coldplay (anybody with a kid named Apple deserves their own multi-channel disc), Jeff Buckley (rest his tortured soul), any Hendrix (the more the merrier), PEARL JAM (drooling), Gomez (pick an album, any album), Van Morrisson (Van's the Man), more Beck (glad to hear the new album is coming out soon...love "Sea Change" in SACD and so does everybody that comes to our house), The Verve (what was that one song they had?), anything on the Thrill Jockey label (can you say Tortoise, Chicago Underground Trio, Isotope 217, Sea & Cake?), Ben Harper (prefer the earlier stuff), REM (love the "Document" DVD-A, have yet to pick up "Automatic for the People", but bring on the "Life's Rich Pageant!"), Sting and The Police (enough with the stereo remasters...where's the multi-channel guys? Thank you Elton John for showing us how it's done!), Love & Rockets "Express" and "Earth, Sun, Moon" (or Peter Murphy/Bahaus/other incarnations), or anything else that is worth putting into Multi-Channel....BRING IT ON! Christ, I knew it would take a while for this to catch on, but come on...throw us a funkin' bone! I love everything that I've got on multi-channel SACD and DVD-A and can't wait for more decent music to become available. I'm trying my hardest to inform the uninformed and convert the masses...anybody that comes over gets the "full dose" of multi-channel goodness and always loves it (has nothing to do with beer!).

Hopefully 2005 will bring a plethora (a veritable assload) of multi-channel discs! :D

Slightly off topic, but am I the only one who thinks "Some Like It Hot" by the Power Station (that track specifically) is just aching for an aggressive MCH hi-res mix? Just heard it on the radio yesterday for the first time in years and it seemed a natural.

I think I'll have a heart attack when I have Trick of the Tail in my grubby little hands. Although not likely, and not sure it would be a great hi-rez mix, Selling England by the Pound is one I would LOVE to have.

Oh yeah, and Rush, any and all! Moving Pictures is probably the the most obvious, but I'd like to see a few, maybe Permanent Waves and Signals at least.

Great choices! I was just listening to Symphony or Damn today at work.

I'd also like to see a hirez version of "Reality of my Surroundings". If I had to pick, I'd rather see "Truth and Soul" out first since it is overall a stronger album IMHO. BTW- Fishbone put on some of the best live shows that I've ever attended.

How about "Wild Child" by The Untouchables? Especially if they could include as an extra track the 7" version of "Free Yourself" (like on the reissue CD).

I second the Queensryche "Operation: Mindcrime"....just saw them at HOB in Chicago last week....they still put on an incredible show. For other metal concept albums, King Diamond's "Abigail" would be TRULY frightening in multichannel.

I love BTR. I've purchased many copies over the years including a Columbia half-speed-mastered LP. It is a classic album. However, I wouldn't have this on my list if I extended it to 100 titles. The "Wall of Sound" and generally muddiness of the sonics on this album makes it a poor candidate in my opinion.

I resigned myself to the thought that the original masters are muddy. If they could breathe some life into this album, I'd be in heaven, but I think we've already heard it as good as it's ever going to sound.

"Remain in Light" would truly be awesome, as would "Truth and Soul" (though I think that "Reality of My Surroundings" would benefit more from the Multi-Channel format). I just wish more would come out...all you have to do is hear a decent SACD or DVD-A and you're hooked for good...good old stereo just doesn't compare.

I'd have $200 missing from my pocket if these 10 came out:
Tool: Aenima
Tool: Lateralus
Radiohead: Ok computer (one of the greatest albums ever made)
Radiohead: Kid A (first track is still the most amazing thing I have ever heard on a CD just plain cool sounding)
Chemical Brothers: Dig your Own hole (they play live in surround sound so why not?)
Fear Factory: Obsolete
Pantera: Cowboys from Hell
Primus: Sailing the Seas of Cheese
Led Zeppelin: IV
Led Zeppelin: Houses of the Holy

I prefer top ten lists

Tragically Hip (boy - you Yanks have NO IDEA what you're missing here!!)

I love The Hip, and I actually saw them in concert in St. Paul a few years ago. They played just as great as I had hoped, and the whole crowd loved them! :)

Bobby –

My list was generated from a list of music I have on vinyl and CD. The list it was generated from also includes the multichannel disks I have. And through an editing mistake, I didn’t remove from the list Homecoming. Dooooh! Thanks for pointing it out. It’s a very well mixed and produced disk. I highly recommend it for anyone who likes America.

And thanks for the compliment on the content of the list. Looking through this thread, it’s clear to me that there are tons of people (more than 2000 have viewed this post as of this edit), eager to drop their hard earned money on multichannel music, that they probably already have in stereo. Too bad the record companies are using their energy to sue downloaders, rather than remixing and producing multichannel material for the masses…

And what a great remastering job they did on this I might add! One of my favourite DVD-A's!

Yeah - I know they've done some touring down there, but whenever I bring them up to Americans, the first response I get is "Who's that?". The Hip is great live - in fact, they prefer live performances to studio work (but I guess who doesn't in that industry). They do sound very unique, with most of their lyrics being about 'Canadian" things (Thompson Girl, Fifty Mission Cap, etc. ) that for some reason does not go over well with US record companies :(

I read today on a Pink Floyd website (I think it was brain-damage.com) that James Guthrie is working on "Wish You Were Here" SACD and they are hoping to release it by years end. Also, Pulse DVD should be out by mid-year.

My wishlist includes: ELP-Trilogy, Rush-2112, Triumph-Allied Forces, and Supertramp-Breakfast in America

I would love to get Bach's Mass In B minor on DVD-Audio.

I just discovered DVD-Audio on my computer (SoundBlaster 2 ZS Platinum & Logitech Z-5500 speakers) and am considering gettting a home player...but...I can't seem to find many selections that I would want on DVD-Audio. I checked Amazon and their selection is limited...is there a definitive source for DVD-Audio discs?

I guess I'll wait to see how the format develops and evolves.

If you are looking for a home player you may want to look at a Universal Player that plays both DVD-Audio and SACD. I could be wrong but I think there are more classical titles using the SACD format rather than DVD-Audio. To find SACD titles and reviews look at this website www.sa-cd.net. Also, check out Sound and Vision magazine for reviews of surround sound musical titles.

Don't know if there is one yet but I suggest you look at the Tacet and ARTS labels for such repertoire in DVD-A. There's much more classical on SACD but that won't help you if you are PC-based.

It looks like Naxos is coming out with this DVD-A disc and Buy.com will have it on 3/22.

BACH, J. S.: Mass in B Minor, BWV 232 Naxos #5.110102-03

I think I'll pre-order it and give it a shot.

One I don't think has been mentioned yet but would be awesome in 5.1 is Billy Thorpe's "Children of the Sun". One of my favorites, even in 2 channel.
