Today when I tried to turn on my 960 the red light flashed like it normally does, then went out but no picture. I could sort of see a faint red line at the very top. Finally unplugged it and waited 30 seconds and then it would power up. Tonight same thing. Going to put in a service call in the morning unless I can determine its something other than the TV. The TV is plugged into a Monster Power conditioner. I might plug it directly into an outlet and see if will power up normally in the morning. Anyone have any experience with this type of problem?

I have seen many similar cases that ended up being a faulty powersupply, but these were on RPTV's.

I have the same exact problem except mine is the 36xs955. Just bought it a little over two weeks ago. Pondering whether I should return it now to exchange for a new set rather than wait and have to deal with services/repair later on if it turns into a major problem.

But how many times the front panel red LED flashes? The number of flashes is the set diagnostics not that accurate I might add but there just for reference. Search for D-board replacement very common problem in some Sony sets.

That just happened to mine too, but even with the unplugging "reset", it still doesn't work. Repair guy is coming out in a couple of hours. I will let you know what the diagnosis is.

Not very happy, especially since the TV is only a month old.

things happen, my suggestion would be immediately replace another one asap. go to the store where you bought it and ask for replacement. If they ask what's wrong with it, tell them you get no power out of it. Otherwise, after 1 month, it maybe hard to return or replace it...

if its longer than 1 month, who knows, maybe the store will be kind enough to understand and let you exchange...

Its not doing it anymore. The two times it happened was when I had been watching a DVD, paused the DVD and then turned off the TV. When I returned the DVD player (Samsung 841 via component) had shut itself down. Then the TV would not come on without unplugging it. I am tempted to try the same scenario again but am leery it could be damaging the TV. On the other hand it might just be coincidental and I do have a part going out and its just a matter of time.

So frustrated!!!!

So, the tech comes out today and says something to the effect...."You've got a problem. I've seen this before, it's probably the power supply. I need to take it back to the shop, but I can't do it today. We'll call to schedule a pickup and will take 7-10 business days to fix."

Worthless.

So, I call Sony back and they say that they can escalate to a higher level of service and get someone else out here tomorrow, and try and fix the TV at my house. New tech calls back and says he's coming out next week. Arghh.

Called Sony back and requested that they just replace the TV, this is too much trouble. They tell me that I need to call Sony Style to discuss the return. After being on hold for 30 mins or so, I end up being transferred back at Sony service. They again tell me that they can't authorize the return and to call Sony Style back. I do so, and after another 30 mins of holding, I finally talk to someone who promptly sends me to some random voicemail box.

I guess I won't have a working TV anytime soon. Lesson learned, never buy anything from Sony Style. Better off going to Circuit City and getting it from a brick and mortar retailer.

Update. Sony has agreed to replace my TV with a new one. Although it took a few hours of my life that I will never have back, I finally got a hold of someone empowered to make a decision and they did their best to make it right.

Now the waiting begins.......

DKSF - How long ago did you first run into the problem? It happenned twice the first week that I got mine but it seems to be fine now. Still debating whether I should still return it before the 30 day runs out. Just hate the thought of packing up this monster and hauling it back to the store...

Seth sent you a PM regarding an ISF calibration on my 34XBR960. I see you are ISF certified in your profile and you are in my neck of the woods. Check your PM if you get a chance.

Moabb:

I had the TV for about 5 weeks. One day, it was working fine in the morning, and then in the evening it just wouldn't turn on. So, I really didn't have an option but to have it serviced or exchanged.

Honestly, if this had happened several months into owning the TV, I would have been happy with the in-home service through Sony. But since the TV was still brand new, I demanded that they replace it.

The only silver lining in buying an XBR is that Sony gives you a 2 year warranty vs. the standard 1 year. The warranty covers in-home service. Not sure what I would do in your situation, but I might be inclined to try and have the TV exchanged with a new one.

Finally got my replacement TV today. The new one worked for all of 30 mins. After programming all of the channels, I watched it for about 10 mins. Turned it off. Tried to turn it back on a couple hours later.....and nothing.

These sets must have a super sensitive/fragile power supply or something.

Not sure what to do next. Do I really want to try a third one?

It could be a power problem? Do you have a good quality power strip or maybe try a PC UPS?

I am guessing that I must have some kind of power surge problem. It is connected to a power strip, but it certainly is not a really good one. In any case, I have all my other equipment on the same power strip, and I don't have any problems with them.

Even if this is the cause, do I really want a piece of equipment that is this sensitive? Seems pretty "fragile" for a mass market consumer electronics product.

Thanks for your input.

Isn't the TV a power hog? When I turn on my 30sx955 my lights/lamp connected to the same receptacle dims for a second. I have the TV connected to a Monster powerstrip which has other components. I don't think it's sensitive, it just uses a lot of wattage (~250W). If it's not getting the power it needs, it probably won't turn on.

Couldn't tell you if mine is a power hog, it won't turn on at all :-).

In any case, after discussing my issues with Sony, we have ruled out that there are any user error issues. Basically, agreed that there is not much opportunity for me to screw up plugging the TV into the outlet.

I must be a sicko, but I have them sending out my 3rd set. We'll see if the third time is a charm.
