I have a Toshiba CN36Z71 TV which features the dreaded Velocity Scan Modulation but it can't be turned off via the User Menu .

I'm pretty sure it can be turned off via the Service Menu . I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me detailed instructions on how to turn it off so that I won't mess anything up in there .

Does that set have a MOVIE mode? If so select MOVIE mode, that should turn VSM off.

Yes it does have a Movie mode and I did hear that VSM is turned off in that state but unfortunatly when I have it in movie Mode I can't use the Video settings I have archieved with my Avia DVD as Movie mode has it's own settings .

You just have to select movie mode as a starting point to turn off VSM. Then set your own settings and save as preferences, this will also save the VSM off condition. Just don't ever select any of the other standard modes or VSM will turn on again.

In our RCA models we can turn off sharpness and get SVM to turn off, or disabling a ire in the back of the set to turn it off as long as you want it turned off, I am talking about the RCA F38310 model CRT wide screen 1280 X 1080.

Hmm I always thought as soon as I changed the settings in Movie Mode it would go back to User Mode but really I'm not so sure , got to try that one .

Yes the display will change to user preferences mode, but the VSM off will stay off if you start in Movie mode first and then save preferences after making your settings changes. But don't select one of the other modes again or VSM will turn back on.
