Do you guys think it will sound better than a onkyo 770 htib? or yamaha 450?

at least now my gf can stop yelling at me for wanting to research the setup lol NOW its time to buy cables!!!!!! ;) lol

Thanks for all the help on this forum everyone!!!!!!!

Does anyone know what cables come w/ this package? I wanna order some good speaker wire before it gets here, especially if it comes without any.

I don't have a good TV yet, so I don't need to order component or s-video connections. But digital connections from the PS2 and the DVD player to the receiever will be needed.. anything else?

Keep us informed:
I havent jumped off the deep end and bought my system Yet!

My luck:
It will be one awsome set up, and about the time I get ready to place the order the system will not be available anymore...

Syn they do tend to end alot of those sales around XMAS.
I would call them up, and see if you can put it on layaway :)
-----------------------

That system will destroy the Onkyo setup, though its a far cry from the AV123 ELTs ...

I posted on their forums and one of the workers said that sale should be on for a while longer, but you never know something could happen.

OK guys,

I have it all setup. I am pretty happy! for the price of the system it sounds great as loud as it will play.

This is definaly a decent setup for a small room or bedroom! Its not as loud as I hoped, but I think it may just be my ears from listening to my expensive car system at full volume!

I haven't been to CC and heard 770. So I cannot compare it w/ that but all of the HTIB, at best buy have no shot at the sound quality!

I am not completly used to surround sound so its really hard for me to give a great review. and I also don't have the speakers even placed in correct(ideal) locations yet. As we plan to move everything around in the room. The center speaker seams to overpower the rest, so I still need to set it up w/ a spl meter. But again its probably just in my head. I could really tell when sounds were off to the left or right side. We watched Wimbleton(sp?) and the tennis ball bounding back and forth on the court made me smile when I could tell which side it was on! :)

We don't have many dvd's but I just signed up for blockbusters moviepass any new movies I should check out??

The only thing I guess that I would say is the quintet II setup sounds a lot louder and better overall but the price is pretty much double the tykes!

Me and my gf have been setting up all of the features and the remote most of the morning. Way too many buttons lol. But were getting the hang of it.

But for $500 bucks its a deal for a perfect setup in a bedroom and fits my needs exactly! Now time to start saving for some different front speakers. I will probably stick w/ rockets. Or maybe just add another tyke for the center rear. as its a 6.1 reciever.

More review coming this week.

Your initial impressions don't sound like you're overly impressed with this unit. After spending $500 you have to cough up more for another speaker? Loudness is NOT one of the problems of the 770 I suggest you take the time to compare it to your present setup. Like has been said on this forum you can't find better value for $400 than the 770.
I second "I Robot" as a good workout for your setup, esp the DTS soundtrack. Another good one is Collateral.

yea, I guess that is my take.

But in defence, its at my gf's house w/ her family home so we(ok she) won't let me turn it up loud during the movie, and the sub is only at like 1/4 gain.

the main reason for the upgrade I want is to mainly complete the surround w/ a rear center. And mainly an upgrade on the front L&R for when playing the stereo. It just sounds kinda weak playing the radio or directv music channels in stereo.

I guess I will have to go pick up some better dvds next time.

I think for the price that I paid I am very happy. Especially overall since it has to be cute to impress the GF. I coudln't find anything else under 500 bucks that was cute that sounds this good ;)

And once again I am probably a little bias on the loudness as my car stereo has a 100x4rms amp and about 1000rms to a 12" sub. And I listen to that at high volume 90% of the time.

I have the Onkyo 770 system set up in a 350 square foot basement and it plays plenty loud enough without distortion. Lately it seems like the Onkyo has taken some bashing about its sound quality and some people are now convinced to mix and match rather than go with the Onkyo. If you are only looking to spend $400-500 for a 6.1 surround sound setup I would highly recommend the Onkyo. Most places have a 30 day return policy. Purchase the system and let your ears decide for yourself.

I wonder what those who bash the 770 are comparing it to? Of course it's going to sound worse than $5-10K systems or in your case $3k speakers as you mentioned in this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=489823) . The 770 bashers have not shown me a 6.1 system with component switching for $400 that can beat the 770. They say start with 2.1; my advice is try watcing an HD NFL game in Dolby digital 5.1 with 2.1 speakers and compare it with 6.1, you'll never go to 2.1 again no matter how crummy the speakers are. The only thing I don't hear gametime on my 770 is the ball sailing thru the air for the Moss (Santana and Randy) touchdowns:cool:

Simple, compare them to any good cheap set of bookshelf speakers from a reputable speaker company.

In my case, I compared them to the Infinity SL-20s ( $140/pair in 1997) and the Boston Acoustics CR-65 ($130/pair in 2002).

But compare them to Athenas, or JBLs, or Energys: just make sure they are roughly the same size.

-Or- read the testimonials on this site from people who have replaced the speakers with the Infinitys and Athenas, send them PMs asking them questions, you guys make this harder than it is.

From what I have read so far it appears they are comparing it to a dayton sub ($100), infinity primus center ($100) and rocket for fronts (not sure how much these cost). Based on just the center speaker and sub they have already spent half of the cost of the Onkyo 770. That leaves $200 to purchase a receiver, two front speakers and three surrounds. I cant imagine how you could purchase everything separately for $400 and end up with a better sounding system.

91stealthrt2,
How much did you pay for your setup and what does it consist of?

There is no question that you could spend more money and end up with a better sounding system than the Onkyo 770. In all fairness if you are going to compare systems they should be in the same price range.

Dayton sub $100
Boston Acoustic fronts $130
Infinity center $100

That leaves $70 to purchase three surrounds, a receiver and the speaker cables.

I still have not found a better sounding setup for $400. I think the Onkyo 770 is the perfect stepping stone to upgrade in the future. Most people agree the receiver and sub are pretty solid. The weakest link is the three front speakers and even then they are not as bad as some people may lead you to believe.

Does the 770 come with speaker wire?

Mr2Spyder:

I think the Kenwood/Tyke bundle is half a kilobuck.

I owned a 770 for the better portion of the year. The weakest links are all the speakers including the sub. The sub was too harsh and rumbly... does good around 40-50 Hz... but that was about it. I think it's because it fires down on it's plywood base. I didn't realize how narrow it was until I replaced it with a PS12.

Dan F:

The 770 box is supposed to include speaker wire. Mine didn't. Better off buying wire from Home Depot or Lowes anyways.

Speaker listening is very subjective. I personally think the speakers sound great. I own the Onkyo 770 and 760 and have just the opposite opinion. I think the bass is tight and the sound is clear. I think people are expecting miracles for under $500. The 770 does come with speaker wires. JNC, if your system did not come with speaker wires maybe you got a returned item. I do have an infinity BU-120 powered sub (currently collecting dust) however I have been pleased with the onkyo sub and haven't even considered swapping out the sub.

At least half the speakers in the lowest price range are designed to look good, with little regard for their sound. Its like cheap furniture, throw it together, and make it look like its something decent.

It really isnt subjective: there are grades of quality, and when your grabbing from the bargain bin, watch out for muddy output.

Mr2Spyder

Well from reading these posts I would say listening to speakers is subjective. I keep hearing how some people say the onkyos are "muddy" and others who say they sound great. Just buy whatever makes your ears happy. I am more than happy with my setup.
