Hi, I'm new here, but I'm a LONG time user and fan of UTV, have had one since the day they went on sale and have yet to have a problem with my original unit :::knocking wood::::

Anyways... I just bought another unit used, and when I first hooked it up, called DTV to activate it, worked great, cleared all the recordings off it, watched a lil tv, set it up to record a few shows that night, then when I tuned it on in the morning, it kept rebooting and then when it finally started, it wants to upgrade via phone line, so I let it try, and it does excatly like all the other post I have read... gets to about 150 blocks, and stops. I have read that I should use my own dial up service, but since I have DSL I dont have access to a modem line.

Any other suggestions? I do plan on upgrading my original UTV with a bigger drive, so I'd also like the know the best easiest drive for that too.

Thanks for the help, I feel lucky with my UTV after reading all the post in here... but I would NEVER give up my UTV for a tivo, nuff said.

Hi,

Best of luck with this used second unit... Hopefully the problems you are having are typical problems and not because of any defects with the UTV...

As for dialup you might try and find a friend that will let you use their clean phone line... otherwise try a few different jacks/cords in the house (even the Network test jack on the house that disconnects the in home wires)also try disconnecting all the other extensions in the house...

A hard drive upgrade might be a good idea, but wait until the dialup issue is fixed...

I'd make sure to keep the unit cool (plastic soda caps elevating the bottom are a good option) and I'd consider a UPS (battery power supply) to prevent power brownout/blackout which UTVs don't usually like.

As for a hard drive... Most new IDE drives will work OK. (UTV drives must support ATA-3 security)

Current discussions are ongoing about breaking the 137GB IDE Barrier... An 160GB IDE drive will only use 137GB so many have stuck with 120GB...

Hopefully over the next week or so we will have verified a way to use Very LARGE drives in our UTVs...

Keep us posted and welcome.

A dsl line is not good foor the upgrade. The noise on some dsl lines can even mess with faxes, and definately are no good for data connections. Try a friend's house for th eupgrade. someone who has a clean phone line
