I've had my RCA 490RE for about 3 years. Just recently I've been seeing intermittent break up of recorded programs. It looks similar to when a storm is coming in.

I'm guessing the the HD could use a good de-frag, or format.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi,

Welcome Flyers87 to the UTV Forum.

Before reformatting the drive you might try one of the UTV reset codes to reboot the UTV.

You might also want to check that the UTV vents are clean... that the internal fan is running... that the UTV is in the open... and the bottom of the UTV is elevated (plastic bottle caps work well)

These steps make sure the UTV is staying cool. You might also want to let the UTV "cool down" overnight or for a few hours, by unplugging it from the wall outlet after "shutting down" the UTV properly.

A little TLC will go a long way to extend your UTV's life span...

If you are still running the original 40GB/35hr hard drive in your UTV you might consider upgrading to a 120 approx 105hrs or 160GB Hard Drive. The UTV has an IDE limit recognizing only 137GB of a hard drive so if you install a 160GB or larger IDE drive you will only get the first 137GB of that drive.

120GB drives are getting much cheaper now days and some people really like the extra room to record more stuff before having to delete it...

The UTV FAQ should cover all of the above concerns, but if you have any further questions let us know.
