Hello all,
I am going to be working on my own HD CRT, and have a lot of questions about what some settings do and the effects. So as I work on it, along the way i'd like to discuss some of them. And in the process hopefully some of us can get a bit more educated.
I have some issues with my set, and look forward to resolving them, with your help.
My set is a Zenith, but this topic doesn't have to be brand specific. I'm not really concerned about MY service menu, but more concerned with what some options do. Such as disabling SVM. And a lot of others.
I'll include descriptions of the service menu options so you can understand the option better, and won't have to worry about what it's called. (for example, VmLev enables/disbales SVM and sets it's level. Don't worry about what it's called, just what it does.)
Of course, any experienced calibrationists are more than welcome to contribute and help guide us on our way.
NOTE: Playing in the service menu is done at your own risk. If you don't know what you're doing, you can permanently damage your set.
That said, first thing I want to address is the SVM. And only because it seems to be the easiest to adjust, at least on my set.
SVM
I know what it is, and what it does.
Luckily, on my TV it is very easy to disable SVM via hardware. It's a plug-in module, and just has to be disconnected. However, since I need to know everything, I need to know how to adjust it in software. Just because. haha.
I found 2 Service menu settings, VmLev, and VmDel, that pertain to the SVM. Although, the service manual offers no explanation at all on these settings.
VmDel, I have no idea what it does. Can't see any difference at all.
VmLev, with this I can turn SVM on and off, and change the level of it's effect.
At first, I didn't see much of a difference. Then I noticed that on background objects, such as those that are blurred, with this setting on max, they have a definite outline. With the setting off, the objects blur into the background.
On foreground objects, it doesn't seem to have much effect. It does, however, seem to make the whole picture extra-sharp. If I turn SVM off, the picture seems to get slightly blurred.
Question: Is the picture really getting blurred, or is this just my eyes perception, since it was used to SVM being on? I do seem to notice a very slight loss of detail, but am wondering if this is just my perception.
I do prefer it to be off, but am afraid i'm losing that detail.
Anyone care to help explain it to me in better detail?
Next, I have a couple of questions regarding other options that seem similar to SVM. They are:
Cti Level:
Color difference signal edge enhancement.
and
Lti Level
Luminance signal edge enhancement.
Can someone explain these settings to me? They seem to be similar to SVM, in that they are edge enhancement options. I am wondering if they are having a similar effect, and slightly degrading my picture. Right now, they are set to max (so was SVM). I can see a difference if I shut them off, but not a great one. Should I leave them off?
I am having dot crawl, and would like to eliminate it. Any other things that I could look for to change to elminate the dot crawl? What types of settings should I be looking for?
That should do it for now. I have MANY other questions, but I think that's a good start.
