View Full Version : Proper way to clean my screen?
Just bought a Sony 34hs420... so far, so good -- except for ONE minor thing. The screen has some smudge marks (finger prints, rainbow smears) on it.
I tried some lukewarm water with some mild dish soap to take it off, but it's not working very well. So my question is, what is the proper way (if any) to clean a new television screen? :)

Use a cleaner specifically formulated for CRT monitors (you can find these at most computer stores). Apply with a microfiber cloth (also usually available at computer stores). Use a dry microfiber cloth to dry the screen.
Steer clear of dish detergent as even a "mild" one is pretty harsh.
Normally I use monitor wipes or just plain water after I run it thru my PUR sink filter :)
Georgia Peach,
Yep, the monitor wipes work great. I use the Dust Off anti-static monitor wipes on my HS420 and they work great. You can use a little elbow grease to remove those tough smudges.
I find that water on a paper towel will work just as good as anything if you give it enough patience and repetition.

The pre-moistened monitor wipes work well, too. But you still may want a dry microfiber cloth to wipe the TV after, because sometimes those wipes leave streaks.
Regular CRT glass screen?? If so, thats what I have and I use "Invisible Glass" with a micro-fiber towel 3 times per week....It's glass!!

You just have to be careful with some glass cleaners, though, because they can harm the coatings that are used on TV CRTs. Better to use something specifically formulated for CRT coatings, or try to stick with plain water. And microfiber cloths or towels are highly recommend since they're not abrasive.
"wax on, wax off..."
:p but seriously, there are a lot of alcohol-free formulas on the market that give you one or two lint-free clothes or microfibers that won't abrade or break down the anti-reflective coating on the screen.
Never ever NEVER use Windex or other similar ilk as it will spell certain slow doom for your CRT.
Thought I'd log on real quick and tell you what I did...
Took some warm water, used a clean micro-fiber cloth to wipe down the screen, then used another clean micro-fiber cloth to dry it. Looks absolutely PERFECT. Just cleaned my computer monitors the same way... PERFECT.
I've been using paper towel and a mild dish soap for years, but I'm now a convert to plain ole' water and micro-fiber cloths.
Thought I'd chime in, thanks to this forum I'm the proud owner of a new Sony 34hs420 TV and a denon 2910 dvd player.. going to buy the HDMI cable now! :)
EDIT: I'm now going to use some WINDEX to clean my old IBM clicky keyboard. Let ya know how it goes...
