View Full Version : 5160 and 5540 not always "seeing" each other on network

I finally just joined the multiple ReplayTV club. I've had a 5160 for a couple of years now and bought a 5540 for the bedroom. My 5160 doesn't always see the 5540 in the bedroom though. If I hard-reboot the 5540 it will show up on the 5160 for awhile but then later on it won't. The network is active because I can go to the 5540 in the bedroom and stream shows from the 5160. I also run DVArchive on my network computer and the 5160 always "sees" my PC. My 5540 is connected via a Wireless bridge but I've used this bridged for a long time and haven't had any issues. The bridge is a Linksys and so is my Wireless Router. Does anyone else have any suggestions on what I can do to solve this problem? I don't really want to have to reboot the bedroom unit everyday.

Turn off the DHCP server and configure all your RTV's w/ static IP's.

Thanks, my network is already configured with Static IPs and no DHCP.
Probably not what you want to hear but these wireless ethernet bridges using MAC masquerading don't always play nice with RTVs and their finicky networking. If you want trouble-free wireless networking with your RTVs you need WDS bridging such as in Buffalo wireless routers that are much touted in this forum. You would simply need a pair of these routers to replace your current Linksys equipment (router + bridge). I messed around a lot with various Linksys solutions in the past (all the way back when they were among the first to offer consumer 802.11b networking solutions) and while I did find working solutions the Buffalo solution has turned out to be much more reliable and efficient - even capable of high-quality streaming over 2 wireless hops.

Here is another observation that I made this morning. I have not had DVArchive running for awhile. I look on my 5160 and it doesn't see my 5540. I start up DVArchive and it also doesn't see the 5540. It seems like something is wrong with my new unit. If I reboot it shows up fine (for awhile).

More likely is a bad cable running TO the 5540!
