View Full Version : Xbox & X1 unable to see menu when xbox boots
I was just wondering why I am unable to see the Xbox menu when I turn on the console.
I have it connected to my X1 via the hdtv cables. I can play games no problem. It takes a bit for the X1 to find the image, but i have never been able to see the menu options while viewing it on the X1 and that is a problem.
Anyone have any ideas?

The video display device needs to support 480i on the component video in order to see the menu. After the game starts it switches to 480p and that is probably the reason why you can't see the menu but can see the game.
A work around for this problem is that you can temporarily remove the Y component cable and connect it to the composite in on your display device. This will let you see the menu when the Xbox boots up and let you set you default parameters. The menu will be in black and white of course. After making your changes, reconnect the Y component cable and your ready to play. Although this is a pain, after making your changes you probably won't have to get back into the menu very often.

The problem is that Xboxes out of the box do not support anything higher than 480i. And you need to set the Xbox for 480p or higher...guess where...in the menu!
Solution:
Step 1: Get the Xbox dashboard update that adds 480p dashboard support (I know Halo 2 has an update to download to play, I hear that Fable has the update necessary, and the Star Wars Trilogy demo of SW Battlefront). I think you can download it, too if you have Xbox live. I used Fable myself as we had rented it.
Step 2: Reboot the Xbox with no game in it (to get to menu). Pull the green component cord - (if I recall correctly...the one labeled Pg) and put it in the yellow composite video input. You'll get black and white menu. Here you can set the video to 480p or whatever you want to use. Reboot and you should be getting 480p in the dashboard.
EDIT: Chris posted most of this above. But just update your Xbox live and it adds 480p and up menu support.

Green,
Thanks for the info. I didn't know there was an update that fixed this (I don't play live). I don't have this problem since my set supports 480i on the component input, but it's nice to know.

Yah, I had to ask about it last week when I bought my Xbox (friendly xbox/home theater folks at lcvg.com forums helped me out). Fable did the job for me.
thanks guys I will try that right away.
