I have a 5040 and recently purchased a 5508. In order to video stream between them, I purchased a Netgear 802.11g router and two wireless bridges. The router and 5508 are upstairs, the 5040 downstairs. Everything works great except the streaming, which stuttered, got pixellated, or got hung up. So I started troubleshooting the wireless. Checked the hardware, replaced a suspect cable, checked the software settings. I then ran Cat 5e cable from my router to the upstairs 5508 (the downstairs 5040 is still connected to wireless bridge) on the assumption that having two Replays streaming wirelessly (at standard quality) was too much for 802.11g. What I am noticing is that streaming works fine when coming from the 5040 to the 5508, but still stutters occasionally when going from the 5508 to the 5040. Anybody got any suggestions why this is? Is there some time of a compatibility problem between the 5040 and 5508? I checked software versions and they have the same version.

Ok, it's not fair to say wireless it totally impossible, but it sure is a pain in the butt. There are too many variables to make it easy to troubleshoot. Here are a couple things to try/consider:

1) Is there any way in the world you can hardwire your replays to your hub/router? Even if you have to spend $$, it is really the best solution.

2) Have you searched the Forum for 802.11g? I found 96 threads that will give you plenty of perspective and insight.

Bottom line, I still think wireless is a mostly smoke and mirrors (yeah I hear you lucky few souls out there). It MIGHT be ok for a laptop data connection, it just isn't practical for video streaming.

Good luck.

Using something from freeantenas.com to help focus the signal from on point to another might help. The speed is directly related to the distance, and if you can get a metal salad bowl or something to make the signal stronger to the other wireless box, you will have a better chance. You could also run some wire to get the wireless point closer together.

I have a similar problem and from the research I've done, this is "normal". If you shut off the other unit and have it not recording at the time the stuttering should cease. But it can't seem to keep up with buffering/recording and streaming high quality shows at the same time. I don't think it's a network problem.
