Looks like UMD's will cost exactly what DVD's cost. This just confirms that I will never need a US PSP (region lockout on movies).

I certainly hope that UMD movies are more reasonably priced when there released in the US. If UMD movies launch at $20 or more in the US I can't imagine them selling well. If Sony hopes to skim the market with high UMD movie prices it would explain why you can't play 272x480 video from memory cards.

I've been out of the loop on the PSP lately.

272x480 is the native resolution for the PSP and it can't play movies back at that resolution? What resolutions does it support?

It does support that res but only for UMD's. When playing video back from a memory stick it's a lower res. The 3GP software to encode the PSP video is also used for cellphones.
