How much lower is the resolution in a direct view CRT HDTV compared to an LCD, projection, etc? I'm talking about the physical number of verticle resolution lines. I've heard that projection TV have over 1000 whereas CRTs have 800. Is this correct?

rptv crt can varies as do directview crt. But most will have a horizontal lines of 1080i.

The vertical lines will what be varies the most from different model to different model.

some rptv crt can have as high as around 1800 x 1080i to as low as 800 x 1080i.

directview crt on other hand, the highest i heard so far based on this forum has around 1400 x1080i and lowest, depend how low. the lowest I believe has about 480 x 1080i, or maybe 640 x 1080i....not sure...

1400 x 1080i crt is sony xbr960, xbr910, xs950.

and 480 x 1080i or maybe 640 x 1080i is samsung 26" hdtv crt or zenith...shrug...that's my guess...

Resolutions definitely vary on the CRT sets.

Several things.

While all the 1080i "HD" direct-view CRTs scan 1080i lines at the back of the screen few have even an arguments chance of fully resolving 1080 distinct vertical pixels. IMO NONE of the large format direct view 1080i CRTs sets are resolving 1080 horizontal lines. The Sony SFPs are coming the closest.

The same applies to RP CRT tvs. Generally speaking, only the 9" gun models have the size necessary to resolve 1080i vertical lines of info. A number of the 7" gun models drop off in the 600 vertical line range. 8" guns are good for 720p+.

The "digital" alternatives(LCD, LCoS, DLP, plasma) have exactly their published resolution.

Typical HD CRTs dotpitch limits to around typically 850 horizontal resolution. However Sony's super-fine-pitch HD CRTs have around 1400 horizontal. Direct-view LCDs typically have 1280x768, though the biggest Sharp LCDs have 1920x1080 resolution. The bigger plasmas 50"+ have 1366x768 and an upcoming Samsung 70" plasma has 1920x1080.
