This is my first post in this forum. I really enjoy reading all the posts and have learned a lot. :)
I have a Toshiba 52HM84 and am looking for a region-free upconverting dvd player. After reading many threads, my choice comes down to the Momitsu V880DX and Oppo DV971H. I read through all the major threads on both(43 pages on 971H  ) and did search for any comparison threads. It seems like most people like the 971 over the 880. However, the comparisons were most made on the 880 not the 880DX. Does the 880DX have any PQ improvement over the original 880? I know there have been some posts comparing the 880 and 971, but PQ is a combination of the player and the TV. Is there any member here has tested both the 880DX and 971 on Tosh HM/HMX?
I will be using mostly the HDMI on the 52HM84. I am current using the component on the HM wtih a Denon in 480p. After calibration with DVE, PQ is quite good already. But I notice some MB issues on some sources. Gladiator looks pretty bad in some places. RoTK EE has some MB as well. That kind of bugs me. MB, shimmering and Y/C delay are my major concerns on the 971. Having 480p on 971 will be nice, (maybe more important than I think just in case I have a ghosted HDMI input on the HM) it is not a deciding factor yet. The downside of the V880 is the "softness" of the picture(due to high freq roll-off? Even on DVI?). Well, and the weak remote.
How are the Divx/Xvid playback quality on both players? Paul Bigelow's post indicated Divx/Xvid only on DVD+R. Anyone has any luck with Divx/Xvid on DVD-R?
Thanks a lot in advance. :)

try both, return the one you don't like.

Does the 880DX have any PQ improvement over the original 880?

yes, especially if you use component out. the deluxe is also more reliable

Thanks Loopy. I will be using the HDMI on the 52HM84 primarily. The component is more of a fall back if I have the infamous ghost problem on the HDMI. Does the V880DX improved on the DVI output compare to the V880?
Can somebody comment on the Divx/Xvid play on both players? The Oppo thread reported it has problem with avi aspect ratio. Any problem with the V880DX?

I think the answer is ONLY if you use component. The additional DACs only benefit the component output.

The DX should not have any pq benefit over the original v880 over dvi.

I have an original v880 that plays avi/xvid files just fine. I am not aware of any aspect ratio problems.
