it's been a long time, since I last posted anything here, but it is time to ask for your help. I'm coming from a harman kardon dvd25 and have now got the panasonic s97. there is one problem with both players and the MB-problem only on the s97. the MB is quite visible on both the panasonic pw6 and on the sharp ga4. BOTH players show a very bad "banding" on certain animated films - "brother baer" and "jungle book 2" being the worse and are to me nearly unwatchable ( this "banding" appears as "zebra stripes" for instance on the baers themselves; on their bellies or their arms). I've always thought, that "contouring" is the problem I'm seeing, but I'm certain, that the contouring I can see on "nemo" in some of the water scenes is very different from what I've described earlier. after much consideration and reading of the "secrets of home theater" I am now considering the denon 3910. can anyone in this forum confirm that it would be a much better player than the s97 (which is not bad at all) or is only the 5910 going to resolve the issues I seem to have with my current dvd-player. having collected over 500 region 1 dvds I have now found a brilliant display in the sharp lcd (the pw6 had to go). I feel I now need the dvd-player to match - which one is it???
many thanks
thomas

The displays may be causing the "banding" being seen. In my view, displays that do poorly with "false contouring/posterization/solarization" do not perform well with players that exhibit the "macroblock enhance" issue.

The Pioneer 59ai does not have MB errors, nor does the Denon 5910. It could be a problem for you with the 3910 (the only way to know is to try it).

You might want to try the new firmware posted for the 97S. It really has helped with the macroblocking issue.
