Hi All: Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Great forum and tons of great info!

I have a Sony LD player that I've been using as a backup. It's a great player with the jog shuttle, dual-side play, etc. Here's my question. The unit plays great (although the display turned itself off permanently as many of them did). It makes a lot of noise, though, if you jump chapters. The jog shuttle forward and backward work great. It plays wonderfully and flips and plays both sides fine. In other words, it works superbly, but it's noisy as hell when you skip chapters. Have heard that Sonys can be noisy, but is this normal, or is it a sign of death to come?

My other two machines are an industrial Pioneer (in storage in case of emergency when the market dries up-single sided, but could be runover by a bulldozer and still work), and a high end Panasonic machine.

Any comments/advice that you have would be VERY appreciated.

Thanks!
Pickle

No solution to the noise issue but I would just use the player until it no longer works then move on to another player. I prefer Pioneer Elite over Sony for LD.

Pickle,

I am just about to list my Sony MDP 650 dual sided laserdisc player with the MSB Technology AC3 RF upgrade on Ebay, including the Star Wars Original release THX boxed set. Less than 50 hours on the unit, works great. Purchased when LD was available for rental in our market, but the vendor renting closed up shop about a year after my purchase. Interested, please PM me.

Thanks for the replies. It's a long story, but the short version is that I was able to buy the used Sony player locally a couple of years ago. After two DOA Ebay LD players, I was only buying locally. Think that I'll probably use the Sony to back up my "No DVD available" LD's (with my DVD recorder) and use it up until it dies.

I still have a wonderful Panasonic LX-K700 LD/Karaoke machine that is as new. And the old Pioneer workhorse is still around, too. But thanks for your offer Glenn!
