View Full Version : ReplayTV can not see the Remote Control
I just received a replacement 5508, my the old one died with "please wait" I sent it back and they sent me a replacement very fast, I received it less then one week. Now the replacement unit can only see the remote if it is directly in front of it. My last unit, I could control it all the way to one side or the other.
Has any one see this before ??

Some 5000 and 5500 series recorders shipped with defective IR panels. Possibly the IR receiver is bent out of position or the solder joints are defective. The unit cover and IR panel need to be removed to fix it. Doing so will void your warranty. If the unit works well otherwise, you might want to keep it and repair or replace the IR panel later.
I wouldn't hurt to put fresh batteries in the remote.

Been there, done that,..
I have MX-500, and the replay remote,
It does look like the IR is not close to the front clear panel..
I was wondering how many people had this happen..as Mikeyboy states, several had defective IR panels ??
I guess I'll send it back, maybe lucky on the next unit....

I have exactly this problem with a refurb 5504 I purchased last fall. The remote for this RTV works fine with my other RTVs, and all my RTV remotes behave identically (i.e., poorly) when pointed at this RTV.
I'm following Mikeyboy's advice and waiting 'til it's beyond warranty before popping the cover to repair. It's inconvenient but no big deal, except when the dog is lying on the floor directly between me and the RTV, blocking the only path that works!
I tell you one thing that worked for me. I dont have as bad of a problem but you can turn the replay unit itself just slightly to where you are pointing your remote from. The unit maybe a little crooked on top of the tv or wherever you have placed it; however, it should receive the signal much better.

Ok. Now that I've had my little chuckle, why don't you read through the LINKs both in Robman's STICKY (up at the top) and mine (in my signature line). You could even try using the SEARCH function!?!
There are several posts describing the problem, others explaining how to "coax" the warranty label off without destroying it, a few excellent pictures of the insides of a 5xxx, etc...
If the basics of the machine are working OK (and you're reasonably handy), why wouldn't you want to check out the alignment of the IR Receiver with the opening in the cabinet instead of taking the chance of getting another unit with a different/not-as-easily-fixed problem?

Try wrapping the dog in aluminum foil, or painting the dog with reflective paint.

Naw, I can't do that. It interferes with my experimental subcutaneous cell phone.

Don't forget, you have to be wearing your tinfoil hat too :)
