I've got an old Kenwood DP-700 that I use in a system for occasional listening that works fine other than the drive belt has worn out on the door opening mechanism. Can anyone suggest where to get small neoprene drive parts? I've done quite a bit of searching with no luck. With cheapo dvd players selling for < $40 I really don't want to put any serious money into it.

Hello,

A *good* electronics repair shop usually has a small inventory of common belts used for VCR, cassette decks, etc. Fry's Electronics does as well. If you have some electronics assembly/disassembly experience and have the broken belt in hand, take the belt to a shop and they may match the belt sell you a replacement one.

"PRB" is a common belt manufacturer that many repair shops use.

I think the key is finding a good one. They seem to be few and far between in this disposable society we live in. I've actually had the belt off before and tried to clean it up. It worked for awhile. It's designed to provide enough friction to open the drawer and then slip, so the proper sized belt with the proper amount of friction is important. I'll continue to check electronic shops.

If the belt is being cleaned with alcohol that might cause it to harden slightly and lose grip. Electronic supply houses and, again, *good* repair shops should have what is known as "rubber revitalizer" to help restore the "tack". For a fee the shop may treat the belt -- should take only a few minutes.

And, if you have not already, give Kenwood a call.

I spent a few fruitless hours on a similar search, and it turned out all I needed to do was give Yamaha a call with the model number. The shipping was more than the part, but total was something like $8
