Can I replace the super-bright blue LED on the ReplayTV 5040?
I haven't opened it up yet (so my warranty is still in tact), but I plan on upgrading the hard drive soon...
There's info here, search for it. =) You may need to check the arhives.
The one in there is a SMC LED, but I think Mikeyboy was able to put a standard LED in place of that without problems. But, that's expained in some thread you should be able to find.

Actually I did try searching for it and can't find anything... I've searched for "Blue LED", "SMC LED", "Replace LED" and can't find anything...

The search function takes some investment timewise once you try combing through the archives. The boilerplate 'bright led' answer is still "try some electrical tape".

I wonder if a little piece of window tint adhesive film over the LED would do the trick....

Is that where the Pirate Bees hang out?
The blue LED is only annoying if you are sitting directly in fromt of it. My 5504s are not pointed directly where we sit, snd you hardly can tell they are on.

I put a small piece of grey duct tape over the blue LED.
The light is still plenty bright through the tape.

I think this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=4070503&highlight=led#post4070503) may answer your question.

The earlier builds of the 5040s have a brighter LED than the one in the last version of the 5040 and subsequent 5500 series units (at least to my eyes).

I just took a black Sharpie marker and colored in the transparent part of the blue light. I can still see it, it's just not as bright.
I actually used two coats - colored over it, it was still kind of bright, so I colored over it again.
Easier even than electrical tape.
I found the monstrously bright blue LED's identical twin on my new Braun 7526 shaver - when the AC adapter is connected for charging. It lights up the bathroom and hallway better than a night light.
