I am fairly new to the forum. I do alot of reading and not to much on posting but I thought this may be interesting to some other folks out there like me. I have been researching a new HDTV since I messed up my screen on my one year old Panasonic 34" , I went to the local television shop who is a major Sony dealer but does carry other brands also. I was trying to compare a Toshiba 34hfx84 to possible a sony of the same type 955 of possible a 960 model. Well the problem I have is like a lot of other people, space in the entertainmemt center (which the wife is not willing to part with) so in what is left in the market today with the speakers on the bottom is the toshiba. After a lot of talking to the salesman about different options he informed me that if I was not in a hurry to pucrchase that sony's new line coming out in June or July will have the speakers mounted on the bottom. He says there are alot of people who have the space concern and that sony has listened to them. Well I thought this may be of some intrest to us that are in the market for a 34 inch widescreen but not the width that most of them have now.

It is correct that a number of the Sony LCD RPTVs coming out later this year will have speakers on the bottom but I have not heard this at all in reference to direct-view CRTs. There are some new CRTs planned but not a 34" AFAIK.

That would be great. I would buy a 34" Sony 955 in a heart beat. I have heard that Sony is carrying over last years Tv's into this year. But, could it just be the same tube but with new casing? I don't think it would be too dificult to keep the tubes they have stock piled and just change the outer casing and put the speakers underneath.

I think a case change would qualify for a model number change.

This dealer could have more info than Sony has released or he could be confusing the LCD RPTVs with the CRTs.

As I was saying in the first posting this is coming from the salesman, he was explaining that a rep from sony was in the store displaying some of the new equipment and also told them of the change on the crt's due to the size of the ones offered today and losing sales due to the fact people wanted a narrower width. I don't have solid facts on this issue but only the salesman's word. I would like to believe him since he didn't try to push me into buying anything, one thing I thought was sincere was he asked me if I could wait until June or July to purchase and to come back and look at the new sony line of crt's. Since sales is his business and lively hood he might of been honest.

Good to know what new is coming in Sony tubes, but luckily the current 34" Sony tube sets will fit perfectly in my entertainment center, as well as most 37" Plasmas I've measured. my opening is about 27" tall and 46" wide.
