I have a RCA unit upgraded to 120 GB. Twice recently while viewing a basketball game that was also being recorded, the picture froze, and wouldn't allow me to fast-forward or rewind. I was able to hit the stop button, but once stopped, I couldn't resume play.
When I hit the power button on the remote to turn it off, the screen went dark, flashed white a couple of times, went dark again and then the unit shut off. When I powered back on, it had to reload the program guide, and it also began recording the basketball game again from the time of the shutdown. I could then watch the remainder of what had previously beeen recorded before the trouble, plus finish by watching the newer recording.
This has only happened while watching a game on NBA League pass, and havent had any trouble with other recordings. The unit is in the open and has never had cooling problems in the nearly 4 years I have owned it.
Any thoughts == shud I be planning for a new DVR?

I have a 5 y/o unit upgraded to 160 gig. 4 months ago. ( I know anthing over 120 is a waste , but it was the best deal at the time)

Everythings fine till last week ... I fill this thing up with 115 shows..99%, movies sit-coms, as I am watching a show the screen jerks, flashes, goes blank. green light still on. I have to turn the unit off for a couple minutes... This happens 3 more times and I have to unplug to reset it. Finally I erase 5 shows , down to 100 shows recorded. It's been fine since.....I thought wth the 160 it might not be "filled up" as the 120 would be.

I had less than 60 percent full, so capacity wasn't my problem.

I've got 2 units, one never crashes, the other crashes about once a month on average. The symptoms are as you mention. Freezes, and if you don't do anything it will reboot in about 3-4 more mintues.

I'm used to it so I don't panic and try do do anything. After it reboots the history logs a powerfail, which I think is the same as a crash to the software. I don't think the guide gets lost. It's only off line for a couple of minutes.

Why only my second unit? Dunno, it's got an original drive, the other has a 100 gig that's lots faster.

If u think u might have a heat problem (faster drives, more heat), debug by setting a desktop fan blowing directly on the unit through the vents and see if the problems go away.
