I am leaning to purchasing the 50XR4 in the next month (need to have in my possession before June 30th) or so unless someone comes out with a "better solution". I would say 80% of my watching will be Digital cable from Adelphia. The other 20% would be broken down with 10% DVD and 10% HD (what little Adelphia has to offer!!!)

I will be sitting at just about 10.5-11 feet from the plasma (this is measurement to my head not to the front of the couch).

Is this the "best" choice for me or should I look at another 50 inch plasma. Room is not very bright at all and can be light controlled ---so to speak. No direct sunlight at all.

Thanks. Looking forward to some replies and opinions.

Sorry cue03, I just make a post in a different thread, not realizing you were in the market for a 50.

I've been looking at 42EDs for a long while, but like optivity, have become (a little bit at least) obsessed with the idea of a 50-incher hanging on my wall.

As long as you don't need the tuner and speakers, that NEC will probably be a good choice. An alternative is the Panasonic 50WD7UY. It is a very nice panel, and you may be able to buy one from a forum sponsor at a lower price than the NEC. The 8UY series is due out later in the year, and a lot of us are waiting to see how (if?) they improve over the 7UYs.

But knowing you need a panel within a month, the 8UYs are probably not a consideration.

BTW, Pioneer and Sony both make 50" panels with very good PQs, IMO.

Not to muddy the waters any more than necessary . . .

my .01 (worth half as much)

I've had the 50XM4 (commercial) since Feb and am extermely pleased with it. Since you will be watching SD 80% of the time, you will enjoy the NEC's handling of SD material and its Stadium stretch mode to fill the screen. Of course, HD looks fantastic.

The NEC is a solid choice. It has an excellent set of features. My coworker recently saw the 50" NEC professionally installed - and was really impressed.

Thanks guys. I don't need speakers or tuner. I will probably purchase the NHT Xd system for speakers etc. As I stated in other threads, the image retention on the NEC is my only concern with it. If it wasn't for that I would have purchased one already.

I wonder if anyone who owns the NEC ever called support to get their take on how to resolve the image retention issue that seems to be on all 50 inch NEC plasmas.
