View Full Version : 37pd25u vs. 37px50
I bought the 25u a little bit ago but am thinking about getting the px50 b/c of HD. The problem is that I watch mostly SD now and am worried about the picture quality. Should I worry or will it be ok. I was also thinking about the 42pd50 but the all silver has me scared.
Need more info, like viewing distance, current and projected availability of HD source material . . . .
FWIW, I think your panel has a great picture.
My viewing is currently limited (probably for a good while) to DVDs and analog cable. Your panel would be close to a perfect fit for me. Even had my plastic in hand before the salesman at Sears told me they wouldn't price match the CC closeout price.
But because I do like a more immersive effect, I will probably spring for a larger panel.
Viewing distance is a max of 7.5 feet in my bedroom...I have a 42PD50 on order to replace the 3725u b/c of improved picture but I think I want the 37px if the it will be ok from that distance.
Personal opinion here: You will see screen door effect viewing a PD50 at 7.5 feet, especially if it is max viewing distance. I know I do. A few others who post here are okay at that distance, but not too many I'm thinking.
From what I've read on this forum, and if it were me, I would keep my 37" ED panel. I don't think with your program material you would see a difference that is worth the $ by going to a 37" HD, and your PQ might even be less than you have now: I've also read here that DVDs are actually better on an ED display because the resolution is a "match" with the DVD, while an HD panel may produce up-conversion artifacts to display the 480 lines on a 720 panel.
I just thought the newer panel would produce a better PQ, but if the SDE will be visible then I may just keep the 37pd25 for a lot less...
I think this is something you (and anyone else in your situation) should check out for yourself.
I've been "working" on a plasma purchase for months (and months!) now, and have seen opinions all over the playing field on the subject. But at your viewing distance, screedoor effect is quite noticeable to me on a 42 inch ED panel. The pixels on a 37-incher are enough smaller that it isn't a problem for me. I have read on this forum where some guys don't see SDE on a 42" panel from that distance. But YOU SHOULD check it out for yourself.
BTW, I think the new 42PD50 does indeed have an awesome PQ. And at my viewing distance of 10 feet, it remains a real possibility for my purchase. But at 7.5 feet, the SDE is quite prevelant for me.
Bottom line: Don't rely on my (or anyone else's opinion). Check it out for yourself!!!!!!!!
That is why I thought the 37PX may be a better unit-bc of the smaller pixels....I am happy with the picture of the 3725u, but if I can get that with the new px then maybe that will be the one for me???Thoughts???
The only thing that might come into play is the possibility of up-conversion artifacts: generated while converting the output of a DVD to the native rez of the HD panel. But again, let your eyes be your guide.
If you are happy with the picture of your 37ED, and if the near-term prospects for source material and distance don't change, then I would stay where I am, save my cash, and wait for some dramatic changes in technology. If nothing happens after awhile (but it will!), then you could still buy a 37 HD, but it will be a lot less expensive. :)
NIUtee, unless you're unhappy with the picture on your pd25, or have some specific requirements (like computer input), I'm really not sure you'll see a great improvement with the px50. 7.5' is just about the perfect distance for your panel, and it really has an awsome picture imo. Check it out for yourself, but if you order the px50 on spec assuming the picture is a quantum leap above the pd, I bet you're disappointed.
Just my opinion... Perry.
