Since switching from my cable isp to dsl, I removed my WRT54G and was just using SBC's flavor of 2wire's Homeportal 1800HG. Without QoS, my VoIP via Voicepulse is awful. So, I plugged my WRT54G back in, and just ran it's internet uplink port to the 1800HG. It works great for a bit, but only if I manually configure the DNS servers in the routers firmware. After a few miniuites, all internet connectivity is dead. I have tried all sorts of things, even flashing to alternate firmwares (the svesoft's alchemy and freeman ones, and the latest one from linksys, no help. When I do get connectivity it's only for a few mins, then down again. TIA for any help!

disable the firewall on the homeportal

Disable all the FIrewall & Routing functions - make it into a Modem only - I haven't found a modem/router combo that is any decent - so save the headaches and use your aftermarket for the firewall / router and use the DSL device as a Modem only. It'll save you a lot of headaches later on too.

I was trying to do just that, but this 1800HG doesn't actually seem to support a total firewall "off" function. Also, when I set it to static ip and then DMXed that ip, and then connected my WRT54G to it programmed with that static ip, same problem. When I look at the inactive device list on the 1800HG is shows a second entry with the same ip. Driving me crazy. I am going to keep trying. There was a setting to connect to a public network and even a bridging option, but I couldn't get any better results when I tried them out.

I also have a 1000SW but the firmware seems to be bad on it, in a week I'll get a copy of the Yahoo! disk with the correct update. I couldn't find it online. Perhaps that will work better. Hmm. TIA for yall's help!

Update: After a bit more fiddling it just might be looking good now. What is the difference between the freeman and alchemy firmwares for the wrt54g? anyone?

Update#2: I just flashed back to the final alchemy firmware. It's all looking good right now. I am gonna give it 10 mins or so, like go take a bath or something, and see if connectivity is stable for that long. If so, I'll turn QoS back on. I guess port priority is good enough for voicepulse?

Update#3: When running my connection through the WRT54G, I can't submit a reply to this thread. Weird.

It works for the most part, but every 30mins or so I loose connectivity for a min or two. It's odd. I have some pingplotter data saved to show you what I am talknig about, just ask if your interested. My email is plvick@gmail.com. hmm. TIA

Okay... 2wire got back to me, and told me my 1000SW needs a 12VDC PS. I had mine set to 7.5 because I could have sworn 12 didn't work when I first tried it. Anyway, after switching back to the 12VCD, and I had already flashed the firmware to a 3.5.15 version I had found online, it's working! I was even able to set the DMZ mode to my WRT54G! So, it fed my ISP's IP to my WRT54G. This is going to solve my problem, I bet! It is all looking good right now. Thanks to everyone for all the help!

It is the strangest thing... everything works for the most part through the WRT54G, but the vital stuff. When I submit my post here, for example. I just get a dead page. If I remove the router, I can submit my post just fine. So, I totally can't submit a post here if I am connected through my router, but I can sign in. I can sign in on ebaym but it won't let me post a bid! Something is up... perhaps I need to be spooking my mac addy or something? Strange. TIA for yalls help, I would have replied earlier but I couldn't!
