I got a pretty good deal on a yamaha reciever the other day, and am completely heppy with it. I just now noticed that the 5850 has built in upsampling. Is there a noticable difference after the converting? I know it wont be anything near HD channels, but does it make a nice improvment on SD channels?

Thanks,
-Brian

It dosn't upconvert to 480p or anything like that, it simply converts composite and s-video to component. The signal it sends is still 480i.

I am buying a panasonic AE700U and I understand that because it is a native 720 machine, it will upconvert for me. If I purchased the Yamaha reciever and it was outputing a signal at 480i would it look any different then a feed from a upconverting DVD player at 720p or 1080i (LG)???

No it still will just output a 480i signal I got the 5790 and I have a direct signal instead of using the avr for switching.

The No.1 benefit of a reciver that can "upconvert" is that you dont have to fiddle with the inputs/output channel for your tv.

If your tv is connected to the reciver via component, a vcr connected to the reciver via RCA leads is automatically output to your monitor without you having to go from your componet to RCA/Video1 or Svideo if thats the case form maybe video 3.

Id rather drive as few remotes as possible!

per Yamaha website:

"Component Video Up Conversion (Full)
HDTV (720p/1080i) Compatibility"

http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/HTIB/HTR5850.htm

That would be more than 480p?!

[QUOErr, dat would be wrong...

I do not believe that is the same as saying 480P. The television upscales from 480I to either 720P or 1080I. Correct me if I am wrong please.

It will pass a 480p, 720p, or 1080i signal that comes in through the component input. The word upconvert is a little misleading, I think a better word would be transcode. The receiver will take a signal from composite or s-video and transcode it to component (I'm not sure if it will upconvert 240p to 480i or not). It does not upconvert to 480p, 720p, or 1080i.
