View Full Version : Swapping hard drive from one 5040 to another

I'd like to swap the HD in my 5040 to my other machine--a 5080. Is there any reason why that would pose a problem? I know I can take a freshly formatted HD with Repaly software loaded on, and pop it into any machine, but once the HD has been used and has material stored on it, is there anything that ties it to a particular machine. For those interested in why I might want to do this: I want to try to determine if my recent problems with my 5080 are due to its upgraded HD (a Maxtor Diamondmax 16 MB cache 240 GB drive) or to the machine itself (motherboard, etc). I've had terrible problems with the machine since upgrading (constant freezing, machine won't reboot after holding power switch down, etc). My HD supplier says the drive checks out fine which suggests that my 5080 is malfunctioning or the combination of the 5080 with this drive isn't a good one. So I'd at least like to check the 5080 with a drive that I know works ok--the one currently in my 5040 (the stock Maxtor 40 MB drive that came with it).
If the drive is a Diamondmax 10 (applies to either 16 MB or 8 MB cache version) then the drive has known problems in ReplayTVs. See: Drive compatibility (http://www.replaytvupgrade.com/#drivecompatibility).
As for activation, it's tied to the motherboard. However when you swap drives between activated units, the ReplayTV will likely need to verify activation (through a net connect) before you can do anything with it. The information here: Re-imaging and activation (http://www.replaytvupgrade.com/#reimagingandactivation) would also apply to swapping drives between activated ReplayTVs.

Thanks Gary. Both machines are activated so it sounds like it should work once the activation status is checked via the web. I had read about problems with these drives, but the vendor maintains that he has sold many and has not had problems with them--I bought it pre-loaded with Replay software from a reputable (as far as I can tell) dealer. He's still selling that type of drive, as far as I can tell from his website.
I would be wary of any source that says a Diamondmax 10 series drive works fine in a 5XXX series ReplayTV. Other Maxtor drives work fine, but the Diamondmax 10 line will cause problems.
