I am about to purchase my first LCD television and have it narrowed to two 32" sets: the Philips 32PF9996 or the new Panny (can't recall the exact model number). However, upon reading some reviews of the Philips, I have a few questions. In the Cnet review, the reviewer makes this comment...
"Unfortunately, you can't change aspects with HDTV sources, and only two options (4:3 and Wide-screen) are available for 480p sources--a real bummer if you want to fill the screen with a nonanamorphic letterboxed DVD."
1) What does this exactly mean?
... and "As mentioned earlier, this panel doesn't scale 720p HDTV sources at all, so they won't fill the screen."
2) What is viewed in 720p? Just HDTV or what? I'm a newbie and a bit confused on what this limits me to.
Finally, a few general questions about the whole scheme...
3) Until my budget allows me to do so, I will just be purchasing the Terk HDTV OTA atenna to receieve HDTV content. Eventually I will get myself an HDTV box and pay for it via Directv. How will digital channels look on these sets? Is it normal to watch them in 4:3 mode with the black bars on the sides or 16:9 mode stretched? I would prefer the stretched mode if it doesn't look tooooo stretched, but I haven't seen this demonstrated yet.
Thanks a lot!
