Has anyone had any problems with their pwd7uy burning up?
My approximately 2 month old set just went out with smoke pouiring out the back. As I jumped up to shut it off, it turned itself off. I quickly unplugged it and felt the back which didn't feel hot at all. It smoked enough that there is still a burnt plastic smell in the air hours later. in fact, I smelt it before I saw it.
I guess I'll find out how good the Panasonic warranty service is. :(
Oh man... thought I'd check the forum one last time before heading off to bed. Now I'm going to have nightmares.
Condolences, John. Hope you make out well with Panny service; let us know how it goes!

I hope you get a speedy replacement. Maybe that hurricane "Dennis" brought bad luck to that area.

That hurricane was no lady - it was "Dennis."

The plasma was two months old and used in the master bedroom. Room temp is kept in the lower 70's. It was on a stand in an armoire but had plenty of air circulation and has never been hot to the touch. At the time of the "burning", it had been on a couple of hours with no issues. I smelt it before I saw it and then saw the smoke just before the picture went out. The picture went out when the set turned itself off by going from active to standby mode. (At least the light on the front went from green to red when the picture went away.) The smoke was very white and smelled of burnt plastic. I put my hand on the vents at the upper back of the monitor where the smoke came out (after unplugging the unit) and no heat was present.
It's obviously bad luck, so I'm very sorry to hear it.
Any product has a few that fail due to something not right at manufacturing that isn't picked up in QA.
Keep us posted.

Luckily the Orlando area's Panasonic authorized repair is just a couple of miles from my house. I boxed it up and it's over there waiting its turn. I'll post again when I hear back from them, hopefully, later this week.

Well I just got my plasma back from the repair shop. They had to replace the board that contained the main audio chip. It is the one that burned up. That is somewhat strange since I use a yamaha ysp-1 for audio and have never used the internal amplifier. Anyway, it is hooked back up and seems to be no worse for the experience. Hopefully this is the only issue I will ever have with it.
Glad it worked out, John. There was obviously current getting somewhere it wasn't supposed to be, whether you were using the amp or not.
On an aside, how do you like your YSP1? I'm very intrigued by the concept.
Thanks... Perry.

Perry, so was I. I bought it based on reviews and the fact that I was setting up in a room where conventional surround sound would have been difficult.
Conceptually, the ysp-1 is neat. In reality, it hasn't panned out for me as much as I would have liked. The overall sound is good, but needs a sub woofer. However, I have never been able to set it up in the room to my satisfaction. To tell the truth, I'm not sure if it is me or the unit. The setup is fairly complex.
Since it is in a bedroom, the main seating is the bed and that means your head is pretty much at the back wall. This isn't a good thing for reflective technology. I also have curtains on one side wall and french doors into a bathroom on the other. I have never been able to find the settings to compensate so that the rear surrounds come from the rear. Instead they seem to come from the mid side walls.
Overall. knowing what I know now, I probable wouldn't have gotten it due to its relatively high price. Hopefully they can improve the technology and bring the price down a bit. There is certainly a market for it.
Thanks for the info, John. A little disappointing, but not entirely unexpected from other reviews I've read. I do think there's a great market... but only if the sound is consistent with the price.
Cheers... Perry.

John,
The audio amp board is known as the Z board and also has a portion of the power supply regulators for the slot board power on it. Most likely one of those went south, not due to anything you might have done of course.
