Minimum speed and buffer size for drive?

Newbie here.

I'd like to upgrade my harddrive to a larger size, but don't want to buy more drive than I need.
I have a 5040 replay tv.
is 5400rpm good enough
2mb buffer?
ATA100?
or do I need to go higher on any of these. Thanks.

That's fine. Some people even champion 5400 rpm drives saying they produce less heat and noise.

What brand/model is the HD you are planning to use?

Heard that western digitals are pretty good.
Any recommendations?

I like seagates for their 5 year warranty

Maxtors are a little quieter, but have 1 or 3 year warranty

(warranty is a big thing for PVRs in my opinion)

WD are known to be a bit noisy

Is there a maximum size of harddrive that a 5540 can accept and work correctly?

As it seems that my 5040[120mg total] has been having some troubles of late so thinking of replacing the harddrives before they crash!

Just be aware that if you access a remote unit with a lot of shows, it may take a long time to pull up the guide. Otherwise there has been no other issues due to size on 4xxx and 5xxx series Replays.

Now those Maxtor Diamondmax 16s are another story, but their limitation isn't due to size, they just don't play all that nicely with Replays for some reason. Might not be that drive, but I know there is an issue with the Maxtors that have 16MB caches.

[/QUOTE] Just to clarify, the problem series is the Diamondmax 10 line of drives. Both the 8 meg and 16 meg cache versions have been problematic in ReplayTVs.

IIRC, Samsung brand drives and 5k's don't mix either.
