View Full Version : My Denon & Listen-Up Experience

My 7mo old Denon 2900 has ben acting up every once in a while. Only on DVDs.

Sometimes when vieiwng a DVD, the image & audio will freeze for a few seconds or skip frames and jitter. It does it once or twice a month, even with new DVDs fresh out of the wrapper. It plays audio CDs, SACD, and DVD-A titles flawlessly, it's just every once in a while on movies it screws up. Sometimes ejecting the DVD and restarting clears up the problem, but it usually happens at an in-opertune time.

I just called Listen-Up (at my expense), the eTailer I purchased it from. I was told that all warranty work is done through Denon, and I must speak with them. I just finished placing 27 phone calls with Marantz/Denon, with no help but a secretary who kept forwarding my calls to an automated service which gave me answering machines, many of which had full mailboxes.

Placed two more calls to Listen-Up at my expense. I was told that I could ship it to them, and they would ship it to Denon. Turn-around would be 4-8wks. I asked for an equivalent replacement, and he told me that they will not replace it. Then I told him I was kind of upset being stuck with a paperweight that has a $1000 MSRP, and that I have to wait 2 months before I even get it back. He said "Sorry".

I will never own a Denon or Marantz product again. Let it be known they are hereby on my $#!T list. I'll use this unit for now, but having it skip/lockup at random once a month while watching a DVD shows how much quality Denon places into their trash.

I'm ready to crack some skulls. I feel like going out and voting for a bunch of neo-con republicans.

Some warranty. "Yeah we'll fix it, you should have it back around late September/Early October". Man am I ticked off right now. I'm so sour I'm not sure I want to even purchase a PJ tomorrow. Now I can't sleep either.

I wish Ascend Acoustics and SVS made everything I need for HT.

Because of these types of horror stories, I only buy expensive items like this from local stores. Then you just bring it back to them for them to ship it to the manufacturer. Have you tried emailing Denon customer service? They could arrange to have you ship it directly to them (although you will be without it for a few weeks). No matter what brand you bought, you would be without it for a few weeks (and other brands are no more reliable).

Bruce Neher from Listen-Up just eMailed me and offered to replace my defective 2900 with an Open Box 2910. I'm still out my entire afternoon, 3 long distance phone calls, and return shipping for the 2900 to Colorado, but atleast they have now made an effort to resolve my problem.

I'm hoping I won't lose much in my DVD-A and SACD playback by stepping down to the 2910 (the 2900 is compared to the 3910), but there is no way I will wait 2 months for Denon to fart around with my 2900.

Chalk a good one up for Listen-Up.

But Denon has dropped the ball in my book...
Still holding by my previous statement of not purchasing another new product by Denon/Marantz though. Not getting through with 27 phone calls and having a 4-8wk repair turnaround on defective items they manufacture ranks right up there with Enron.

I think your expectations are too high. Wasting an afternoon and a few phone calls (don't they have 800 numbers?) is par for the course with almost any device failure unless you can walk it over to a local dealer. Listen-Up is doing right by you and, remember, it was Listen-Up that said that it was 4-8 week turnaround. I'm guessing a lot of that was their time in shipping and receiving.

As for Denon, I am surprised since real people answer the phone in my experience. (Yeah, they know who I am but only after they answer the phone!) Besides, who's Marantz/Denon or Denon/Marantz? They operate independantly even though they have the same corporate parent.

This is unfortunate and you are upset but your reference to Enron is a bit over the top.

4-8 weeks is good. My 2900 took 4 MONTHS. Get this, it came back to me broken. The 2910 is a step down all the way around. I wouldn't accept that crap.

Even though I bought the 2900 on clearence for $599, it retails and originally sold for $999. When spending this amount of money on a DVD player I don't expect to go through the hassle I just went through. I get better service from the local gas station than I got from Denon. I used the 800 number available on the support section of their website. Called 27 times and was redirected to 15+ numbers speaking only to an operator. Listen-Up informed me that typical factory repair is 4+ weeks. Throw in shipping times/paperwork and you see 4-8weeks.

Patrick, if I went without a $1000 piece of gear for four months after paying for it in full you would see me on the evening news.

Read some comparisons before deciding to swap for the 2910. From what I gathered I'll be taking a step down on the audio and a step up on the video (HDMI output). DVD-A/SACD is a big part of my useage with the 2900 though, so I hope it's not too noticeable... :(

BTW, the Enron sarcasm was just that, but it was meant to show the little guy getting screwed.

I have zero tolerance for this kind of crap at this price level.

I recently had a similar experience with my 3910 and posted a query in that forum. In my case I noticed the unit flipping between video and film on LOTR EE 1 about half way through. This made the film do exactly what Nicholas described. I was able to get through to Denon tech support but they had no advice given it was intermittant. They did say that if I continued to see it I could send the unit in but it would be tough to pinpoint such a fault. They also said that it probably wouldn't work but I should cycle through the Video modes as well as the Auto modes to see if the problem goes away.

We all want to pay the lowest price & have it warrantied forever, but just try being on the other side of the fence for awhile (being the retailer or manufacturer). ListenUp did not manufacturer the player &, at first, laid the blame solely on Denon; which they should. After your chats with ListenUp they came through & offered you an exchange. I have a 2910 because I could not justify an additional $500-$600 for a 3910. Do you have the electronics (amp or receiver), interconnects & speakers to justify a 3910? My 2910 is wonderful so far, fits in very well with the equipment I have & I would have purchased a 3910 if my budget could afford it & the rest of my system made it worthwhile. The 2910 & 3910 use many of the same components; see the DVD Benchmarks at http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi for details. To quote them, "The 2910 is similar to the 3910 in many ways. The 3910 ups the ante in terms of power supply, shielding, and audio performance, but the 2910 is tugging at its coat tails. This is definitely an improvement in some ways compared to the popular DVD-2900, but it gives up a little too."
