Good Afternoon,

I am in week two of using my brand new H31 projector on a 92" Designer Contour Video Spectra screen. My DVD player is the Denon 2900. I previously had a Hitachi 57T500 and the picture was incredible! I knew going in that I would be sacrificing some by going with the H31. The biggest problem right now is the SDE. I have noticed that I can really see it on bright scenes. If I am watching a movie and the scene is supposed to be dark, the picture looks pretty good. Then, the scene switches to an outdoor scene or a brighter scene, I notice the SDE.

My screen is a 1.5 gain and my room is completely light controlled. Should I consider getting a different screen?

Would purchasing a DVI/HDMI dvd player help eliminate some of the SDE? If so, any recommendations around the 300-400 price point?

Has anybody on here used a component DVD player with the H31 then switch to a DVI/hdmi player and notice a noticable improvement in PQ?

My wife knows that I am not 100% happy with the change I have made. She said we can look at getting a new DVD player if that will fix the problem for now. I can't return my projector at this point, so if I decided to change projectors I would have to sell my H31, take a hit and put extra money into a different unit.

Any advice would be great. Also, if their is another post that I should look at, please refer me to that one.

Thanks a bunch,

Coach.

I would advise you to stick with the DVD-2900. You have a 480 ED projector, and one of the best 480 DVD players made. It should be a killer combo. As far as screen door goes, the more pixels there are, the less SDE. The pixels are smaller & more plentiful. The best way to combat SDE is to scoot back, or get a smaller screen. Some people defocus a hair to solve it as well. I have a new Optoma H78DC3, and see SDE at around 4ft (118" 1.3 gain). My primary seating is at 12' back.

Thank you for your input. I really can't move back much more due to the size of my room and the layout of my surround speakers. I have considered waiting until late fall to see what new units are coming out and then see if some of the older units fall into my price range. I guess I should have gone with the H57 and maybe the SDE wouldn't be as noticable.

By the way, which projector did you have prior to purchasing the H78DC3?

It's my first PJ. I had a 70" Sony XBR LCD before.

My wife and I just got done watching Man of the House and before we started it, I measured what the viewing distance is from my chair to the projector. I am sitting about 13.5 feet from my projector. So, if I am supposed to be sitting at least 1.5 times back, then I am just right. I decided to scoot back a tad and once again I didn't notice the SDE hardly at all. I am really starting to hope that I am getting used to the unit. That would be the cheapest way of solving my problem!

I find that the higher the Gain (you said your screen is 1.5 gain), the more noticible the SDE is. You could try a screen with 1.0 gain. Just a thought.

Here's my thoughts,

SDE is a function of DLP and the projector - you might try adjusting the focus, really, some have reported being able to blur the SDE without affecting the picture unduly.

After buying my H31 i upgrading my DVD player to the panasonic S77 and using HDMI i would say, if you are happy with the picture quality of your DVD player over component, don't waste your money upgrading. The h31 handled 480i component video quite nicely.

or put another way, i would not upgrade a DVD player solely to get HDMI/DVI for the H31. Especially if i owned a denon 2900.

Save the money and take your wife out for dinner and a show.
