Ok, now we have great LCD and plasmas on the market.

Resolution is arriving at 1080p.

So, what's next?

A higher resolution? What's the next level?

or

Maybe sometype of 3-Dimensional Depth technology? (Not requiring glasses)

When do you think we will see the next leap? 2007? 2009?

What do you think?

Please chime in.

No. The 3-Dimensional Depth technology will come sometime after the LivingRoom Picture-Window that suddenly transforms into a solid 1080p image when you say "TV-On" technology.

As NetGod, surely you already know this :D

Lol, Don't expect anything higher than 1080p for another 20-30years.

1080p as it is will take a very long time to become a standard like 720p and 1080i.

Isn't this similar to asking just after DVDs came out, well's what next? The next stage is to sell the 1080p for the bigger screens and 720p for the smaller screens into the market. The makers concentrate on cutting prices, winning market share and replacing all those SD and early generation HD TVs. That is going to take 5 to 8 years or likely longer as people don't replace TVs as often as they do PCs or even cars. Only towards the end of the SD replacement cycle will they worry about what is next - 5 base (RGB plus whatever) color displays, 12/14 bit per color recordings, 13.2 sound (joking - I hope), 3D, and virtual reality plug-ins directly into the wetware (your brain).

But once we get to 1080 TVs, just like has happened with PCs, you enter the area of diminishing returns in terms of improvement with technology. It is going to get a "so what?" response from the bulk of the buying public. We already see a lot of that between SD and HD.

Its just the beginning. UltraHD within 10 years. 8k movies at the theater (Once the movie studios realize that they need to lead the charge to digital (not the theaters that are losing their collective butts) Nano technologies will give use TV on wallpaper within 5. :D

The next phase will be the reduction of HD displays to under $500 for 42" and ~ $200 for around 30". Pricing needs to get to the "average" consumer level.

This will result in the vast majority of network television to be broadcast in HD.

The upper end of the market will progress to 1080p.

The ultimate future will be 3-dimensional.

Ultra HD yes i have heard of that, but 10 years later i don't think so,maybe 20-30 but not 10. 1080p is going to take a long time as it is to get material for it given the huge bandwidth it requires to send it over the air or put on disc.

If Ultra HD came 10 years later, then it would piss a lot of people off that just got 1080p displays, and you have to remember that HD is just beginning to become mainstream now, not many people have a 1080i or 720p HDTV set, nevermind a 1080p set.

With the way HD is progressing now, well maybe a bit slow but it is getting up there, don't expect to see any Ultra High Def for a very long time.
