I was considering the XS955/XBR960 on my next tv purchase but someone had told me that sitting from my 7ft viewing distance that i wont really notice that extra horizontal resolution that these sony's have with its SFP tubes.

After i was told this i began thinking about my previous choice which is the Toshiba 34HFX84 which provides around 1000 horizontal lines of resolution. To me if my viewing distance at 7ft would pretty much make sony's extra lines of resolution less noticible then i really would want to pick up this Toshiba as it has two hdmi inputs and i can buy this tv for around $900 which is almost half the price of the XBR960.

So does a viewing distance of 7ft really make the extra lines of resolution alot less noticible with sony's super fine pitch tubes? I just cant see me dishing out that much cash if it really wont be that much more noticible compared to this Toshiba set im also considering.

Just want to see what you home theater buffs thought about this question of mine, thx in adv

well if you can find the Toshiba which has closer to 1200 lines I believe
I would seem like a good buy for a new TV
the 34HFX84 was 1599 last year when they were being made
and the 34HF84 was 1399

if you are referring to the newer toshiba 85 models
I think the Sony is the better option

but really I think the sony is the better option either way
but 900 for a 1600 dollar TV is a good deal

also I think at 7" on the 34" TV you would be able to see the difference
between the Toshiba and Sony

Thx for the info. Im referring to last years Toshiba (34HFX84), a local store is wanting to get them out the door since the new Toshiba's are coming in. Im particulary intrested in the last years FX model anyways because of the dual hdmi inputs it has and plus its made by Toshiba, not outsourced like the new Toshiba's.

By the way, which Toshiba's have the 1200 lines of resolution?

I sit at just under 8', I previousy had the Toshiba 34, and now have the Sony 960. I can DEFINITELY see the difference. The Sony is unquestionably sharper, clearer, and with definitely better color. No question (at least in my experience.) I had the Tosh for 3 weeks, and I've now had the Sony for 2 weeks. I noticed the diff. the very first day I got the Sony.

why the 36" and not the widescreen 34" ?
the 36" is 4:3 not 16:9

I know..i should of stated that as far as the sony's i was looking were between the 34XBR960 and 36XS955. Reason why im leaning towards the 36 inch sony is because its cheaper then the 960 and i watch alot of SD content and to me..its just more bang for the buck because it carry's the SFP tube as well and i dont mind letterbox HD content at 33inches.

Though going 34inch is still an option as you see, infact i was just about all for that 34 inch toshiba but the more i think about, i wont be satisified after my tv purchase if i go with the toshiba when i know i could of got the sony with SFP tube, i can just see it now lol.
