View Full Version : Recommend me a progressive scan DVD player for Sharp LC-37D5U
I bought a Sharp 37" LC-37D5U and an Oppo OPDV971H and I am less than impressed. After thousands of dollars and many hours on forums. I get a barely adequate DVD picture. Component connections will not upconvert on the Oppo. The Sharp will not read the DVI connection from the Oppo, not to mention the retarded minijack connection that the Sharp has associated with the DVI input.
Can anyone recommend an upconverting DVD player that works well with this Sharp LCD?

I just received the Oppo today. Couldn't wait to leave the office to hook it up. I agree that the audio jack is somewhat braindead but..... As with everything else, reading and re-reading the instructions yielded positive results. I configured the DVI (input 5) to Digital-AV and ran through some of the setup screens on the Oppo to 1080 output. Like a clown, I used Finding Nemo just to get some video. The screen is overcome with green. I know the green problem has been discussed but I just have to look for the posting.
The Oppo looks like a very capable unit but it does seem to demand some homework on the part of the owner. I'm going to make some time to get the unit dialed in.
If anybody knows of the green screen thread, I would be most appreciative.
Thanks

First, your Oppo is not connected correctly to your set. I did buy the Oppo and I do own the same set. I didn't like the macroblocking and I returned the Oppo, but I could get a picture on the screen.
You must the DVI interface to accept digital video. That's just a configuration issue.
Now, if you end up not liking the Oppo, even after you get a picture on the screen, buy the Pioneer DV-588A-S. It does not upconvert, but you don't need that with that set.

I have a Sharp LC-32D5U in my Study. I'm typing on it as we speak. Isn't the DVI Input for PC only? Sharp included HDMI inputs for DVD & SAT. Sharp took a backwards step with the new models, offering VGA only for PC. Get a DVI-HDMI cable, or a DVI-HDMI adapter. That will do the trick.

Component connections on the Oppo are awful. Lots of noise, lack of detail, etc.
After I unretarded myself and set the Sharp output to digital, the Oppo works fine. I've been using it for a few weeks now (a lot of Finding Nemo for my son) and after adjustments, the picture is pretty good. Still not eye-popping "this is HD" quality, but I haven't had it professionally calibrated. No macroblocking at all so far. It's a shame that there isn't a way to run digital audio from the Oppo to the Sharp, but that is an issue with the TV connections and not the Oppo.
I also purchased a Toshiba SD-6980 with HDMI and have connected it via HDMI to the same set. The Oppo box looks sleeker and I'd say that the picture is slightly better with better (sharper and better reds)[Farroudja?] but the differences are slight.
