View Full Version : HP 42" Plasma PL4200N same as Panasonic 42px500u
I am using the THX Optimizer from the Finding Nemo DVD. With the exception of the brightness setting, my results end up being about the same as the settings posted here and in the Panasonic forum. However, using the Drop Shadow test, I end up with a brightness setting of 0 for Standard and Vivid and -4 for Cinema. These are the levels where the shadow disappears into the background but I can still see the "THX" symbol. Am I missing something? The lowest brightness setting I have seen posted is around 6 or 7 (or 2 as noted in the post earlier on this page). I have not watched any programs for an extended period of time since making the adjustments, so I am not sure how it will look for programs in HD. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Even though the 42PX500U is STILL unavailable so this is probably not a fair comparison -
Has anyone noticed that the HP is now selling for MORE than the 42PX500U is listed for (at TVA, 6Th St., Tech Depot, etc.)
(3-5 more   )
While going with the HP because it is less seems like a deal, is everyone still going to go for the HP when it is more than the Panny?

Got a chance to see a PL4200N live today, but only with a non-HD feed. I was still about to buy it because I've been looking for so long, but when I sat at eye level in front of the unit, I found a lot of GLARE being reflected from its glass. In fact, this thing is really, reflective.
Anyone with the unit in-home have a glare problem?
(BTW the store unit also had the "dimples" on the bezel as noted in prior posts - it must be a packing problem.)

Absolutely no glare problem with mine at home (I have the 50"). In fact, I have less glare issue with it than any of my previous TV's, including CRT and rear projection, in the same spot. During the day it sometimes gets direct light too...
Is it possible that they had a light reflecting directly on it at the store? ANY screen has the potential for glare in certain conditions... In any event, I would be surprised if the glare is any worse than any comparable unit under the same exact same conditions...

No glare issues on my 50-inch unit. I have to agree with Citivas..the HP seems to have less glare than my direct-view had....about 40%-50% less. The anti-reflective coating is more apparent on the HP to me than any other plasmas I've looked at.

I am assuming the 42pd500 would have the same anti-glare coating as your HP? While comparing the HP and Panny at a retailer, I managed to find a 42pd500 open box with very few hours (less than 20?). I am still debating if I want the open box 42" or a new 50"...
Is stating the open box price against the forum rules? If so, who can I PM to determine if the price is a good deal or not?

Good luck!

Indeed we do have a special pricing (TVA) along with our 5 star program. It appears the PL5000N is in short supply at this time and the PL4200N is available. To save you some time, you can PM me if you like for details and special information. Otherwise, if there is anyone close to our store front in Santa Monica, Ca interested in the TH-42PX500U there is 2 in there to take a look at there (visit www.tvasantamonica.com for contacts down in our CA location, sorry I'm in WA so you wont see me there :)..)

Any progressive scan DVD player will generally look better than a non-progressive scan, IMO. You can get them very cheaply now; not even sure they still sell non-progressive scan machines anymore. Sure you can pay hundreds for the super-fancy ones, but we are talking degrees of subtle versus a significant difference for progressive versus not. I have a 4 year old higher end Sony non-progressive scan DVD player and a super cheap combo VCR / DVD player from Sam's Club (approx. $50) that I got just to replace the borken VCR for my kids old videos, but it is progressive scan for ther DVD, and the bottom line is DVD"s look better on it than my old, much more expensive and fancy-featured Sony...
Upconverting will not be the same as true progressive scan content, IMO...

Is there a code for the time warner cable box (scientific atlanta 8300) that will operate the hp 4200? Is there a work around to get the cable remote to work the system? :) ? If not, what is the best universal control to use with the system?

I have the Harmony 520 which I think is a WalMart exclusive (that's where I got it anyway). The thing is a real mixed bag, it works great so far as operating all my equipment (including my HP PL5000N) but it's made cheaper than your average $20.00 remote. The buttons often stick and several of them are too small (unnecessarily). If I were to do it again I think I'd try the model 659 which can be bought for about the same price via mail-order and looks more substantial.

I think the buttons on the 659 are even worse; most of them are tiny too and they are rubbery instead of plastic which doesn't work as well... This is my issue with all the Harmony remotes -- great functionality, even a reasonable remote shape and button layout -- but terrible actual buttons...
I have a question for all of the people that went with the HP pl5000n over the panasonic.
I have had the TV for about a week now and for the most part I am pleased.
The only issue I have outside of the dimples on the molding on the left side is I am suspect of the quality of the internal tuner. Once I get my DTV HD tuner I will not use it much (picture in picture only for football).
Without getting into specific channel numbers I have been able to pick up my fox digital for about 30 seconds total and the rest of the time it is saying "channel not available"
My CBS was getting a decent signal but would sometimes completely drop out - for the past 4 days I am getting a consistent signal of 88-97% but it says "poor signal quality" and I get no picture at all.
I have picture loss with ABC but audio is fine.
I used my friends dtv receiver to locate signals and was 90% on all local channels with no drop out.
It is not a provider issue as my friend is getting all the channels I am having problems with from the same towers at about the same distance.
I will compare when I get my receiver in but I was curious what others expiriences were.

I got the 4200N edtv Saturday. I too have dents on my left side grill. I have regualr direct tv and I would say I am satisfied with the picture, not overly impressed but satisfied. Some channels are better then others. I tried watching the Jets game on cbs on Sunday and it was pretty bad. Biggest problem I see is pixelation/degradation around the edges of the screen. DVD's looked good, although I noticed some peculiar images when watching The Notebook with my wife the other night. I tried getting in over the air signals but to no avail. I am not ready to place blame on the tv yet because I am in a new house and am trying to work off of the previous owners OTA antenna (medium to large directional uhf/vhf with winegard ap4700 preamp attached to it). I need to rule out faulty hookup/wiring before I blame the tv tuner, or my area 08723 is just not capable of recieing signals, but I dont think so. I got the set at 6th ave, they were willing to deal, they will price match 30 days from any authorized dealer including on Black Friday. I also got their extended warranty making it a total of 5 years. Since I havent been able to watch HD yet, I can't truly tell how happy I will be with this set. Right now I have a small bit of buyers remorse though.

brianpi...I would have to say that I would be hard-pressed to find anything good to say about viewing "regular directv." I've watched plenty of HD on this set via cable and there have been no pixellation on the edges and a great picture. I would wait for HD box to be installed before giving in to "buyer's remorse." But if you still feel you bought in error...don't hesitate to send it back since you have that choice. After all...no matter how much we all get into these things, they're only tvs.

If the Harmony remotes are not any good does anyone have any other suggestions, such a Logitech or some of the many others available. Is there any separate forum on universal remotes. My 42" hp plasma is great but the remote is poor. It is easy to hold upside down. Can unused sources be deleted on the source menu? Does using the hp remote always return the tv to the tv source? I installed the cable card (time warner) and also ordered the hdpvr cable box to try both. They seem to change channels at the same speed but there is no guide on the card. Did I read correctly that the hp has no tv guide?

I watch SD DirecTV signals every day on my 5000N and have no complaints. I was expecting problems based on what I saw at the store, but have been surprised. Sure it is not perfect but that's to be expected. But I get no pixelization issues and on par find the overall PQ better than SD DirecTV on my old pre-Plasma set...
My guess is the bigger issue is brianpi got the ED set. Much lower resolution overall, so more apt to have pixelization problems...

Agreed the HP remote is pretty flawed. Thats'w aht they get for apparently designing it in-house instead of OEM'ing it like they did for the rest of the set... Since the buttons have no light until you hit one, it is a pain to find feel for the right button, especially since there is poor logic on what to do if you hit the wrong one. For example, if you het a channel up or down button (easy to do in the dark if you pick it up upside down) it automatically swicthed to the OTA channel source even if you are not in it and have not OTA installed. Every time you then have to select Source and the correct input to get back to your program. Any logical remote manufacture would have disabled or ignored the button when in a source that doesn't use channels...
Yes, the HP has no TV Guide and you won't find one on the card...

Agreed it is an awesome concept for the remote, but I tried it and can't get past the buttons. It is just two bad they can't get this one thing right. Even their newest remotes finally went to plastic from rubber, but they are widely reported to be cheap and not work consistently...

You're probably right with your assessment of the problem "brianpi" is experiencing. I probably jumped the gun on criticizing directv SD. My SD via cable is also good without pixelation problems. I'm still keeping the set low in terms of picture settings so I'm probably not getting the most out of the set that I could be getting. Maybe I'll bump it up a little in couple of weeks. I'm also thinking of getting it ISF calibrated but it's not cheap. There's about a six-week wait for an appointment. By then, the set will be broken in.

My SD (from cable) is also surprisingly good, especially the digital SD channels. I still have my 32" tube set in the room with the plasma and I actually prefer the SD on the plasma. I've heard that Direct TV uses a lot of compression, maybe that combined with a larger screen and the sharpness set to the default setting (way too high) is brianpi's problem.
BTW I also have the dimples on my speaker grilles, but don't believe they're do to shipping damage, rather I think it's from the way the speakers are attached to the grilles. Does anyone know if the Panasonic 50PX500U has these dimples?

Well I have adjusted my settings based on posts made here and my sight. After watching tv tonight I am probably just being too picky with the SD. Besides the degradition around the edges, it does look better then my old crt. It may have to do witht he fact that I know it can look better and that is subconsciously getting to me. I think the dents on the side grill are just how they are manufactored. It looks like they belong on an episode of American Chopper when Pauly is hammering out some metal...thats what the dents remind me of. I can only see them when a glare is hitting them.

Finally got a hold of my sales rep at 6ave last Sunday, who actually apologized profusely for the delay of the order, "beyond his control." Panny's fault, of course!
The answer was: 6ave got some 42px500s in a few days ago and still some units left as of last Sunday (if I wanted to switch) but not the 50px500 I ordered, though he expects somes to come in before Black Friday. :D
I just LOL when I heard his answer about the 50px500 coming in before Black Friday! Yeah, right...for any of us who follow the threads on here and the "Panny out of stock," we know better to take that answer seriously. It's too late for a chance to break-in any plasma for my the xbox360 anyway; so, I could and would wait a bit longer.
I was hoping to get the HP PL5000 instead of the 50px500, but the clone is also out of stock and has no anticipated date of re-stocking at 6ave. Pio 5060? You guessed it; no stock until another week or so and 6ave doesn't stock a whole punch of the Pio as they would the Panny.
So, back to square one: Live with my Panny TH42PD25U and my Front PJ for now!
If I have to wait till March of 2006 for the Panny as others suggested at the other thread, I might as well wait for the newer Panny model coming out sometimes after June of 2006! Or, the Hitachi 55" is starting to look good, too!

This is probably stating the obvious, but have you tried this trick to get your remote to work with the HP plasmas?
Program your tivo remote
To program try this... hold the tivo button and tv power button together until the led stays solid.
cover the remote and hit channel up once and then uncover the remote and keep hitting channel up until the tv turns off, when it does hit the enter button.
the reason to cover up the remote on the first channel up is it will turn off the tv and you will think that's the right code but the tivo remote will not mute the tv. the next code it finds will mute the tv.
Sorry if that's an obvious suggestion - I figured I couldn't hurt to try.

I almost bought it at CompUsa also, but didn't like the fact that while I could return it within 21 days, it would only be for store credit. Given the limited amount of plasmas in stock, it would take me a few years to burn through that much credit at CompUsa. :(
Don't you have to enter 0999 after getting the solid red light?
I tried doing it with the 0999 and I was unable to get it to work.

As far as I have been able to determine, all the Harmony claims about their particular removes being specialized for HD or Home Media Centers or Satellite or DVR's, etc., is just marketing hype. The fact is there are only a minor differences in the overall buttons avaiable on each unit and EVERY Harmony can be programmed to work with all the same devices -- so they are all equally capable of handing HD or TiVo, etc...

Is this some sort of short-cut to not have to try each 4-digit code? It cycles up them automatically or something? That could take a long time to get through them all. Does anyone know if ANY of them work?
I have not tried this suggestion, but I did try all the Panasonic codes. I also sent written inquires to both DirecTV and HP and got consistent answers from both that there is no code on the TiVo that will successfully control the HP set. They may be wrong, but that is there official word...
An update on the tuner quality.
I had my HR10-250 installed and the channels that I am unable to get on the HP antenna come in perfect.

I'm new to this game and just purchased a PL5000N. I have the non-hd d* box w/ no component connections. what is the best input until i can upgrade my box to mpeg4? s- video?
live2veg,
I assume you also have no digital connections (DVI or HDMI). In that case, S-Video will be best, followed by composite. It's possible one would not be able to tell the difference between the picture quality between S-vido and composite.

S-Video is the best if you don't have HDMI or Component...
But while there is a small puddle of difference between composite and s-video, there is an ocean between s-video and component if the input is at least 480p... Even if you can't get digital tv right away, after buying that plasma the least you can do is treat yourself to a $50 progressive scan DVD player (or better) and enjoy the water...
I have the HP PE4200N EDTV. It uses a totally new remote protocol unrelated to the Panasonic codes. Most universal remotes won't have the new code. I was able to use a JP1 capable universal learning remote to duplicate the original remote. Other than Harmony, I think that's the only way to go at this time. I uploaded my JP1 HP remote upgrade file to the JP1 website if anyone is interested.

Which model for Philips HDTV antenna ? I will be looking for a HDTV antenna soon after I confirm buying PL4200N.

To those of you with more knowledge/understanding of upconverting and scaling....since the HP 5000 model scales everything to a native 768 resolution, how apparent (if at all) would the difference be between watching 720p material via a cable box in pass-through mode vs scaling all signals via the cable box to 1080i? Or would the latter scenario just introduce more artifacts at times with picture quality difference being negligible?
Similar to CJArciola's question, I'm wondering what is the preferred DVD viewing mode with the HP PL4200? Is 720p going to be better than 1080i, or vice versa? To my untrained eye testing one or two movies, I cannot tell the difference between the two.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread - this is where I learned of the alternative to the Panasonic I had on order. The set arrived on Friday and I had all weekend to get acustomed to it. I can't begin to describe how spectacular it looks in my new family room.
I'm using it with a Harmony remote (659) that I have had for awhile now. The included remote worked fine, but like others reported I couldn't get my cable STB remote to work with the TV. However, the Harmony handles all of them perfectly - even PiP!
I'm also using a Samsung HD850 DVD player witht he set. I have the Samsung sending out 768p signal via component to the TV and this looks stunning as well.
Has anybody else come across this issue:
I am using a Belkin PureAV power conditioner (http://catalog.belkin.com/PureAV_detail.process?Product_Id=178914). The device has switched outlets, which can be signaled to turn on or off using an external component like a receiver. I have connected the power conditioner to my Denon 3806 receiver's auxiliary outlet using the supplied chord, and plugged the HP PL4200N into the switched outlet on the power conditioner device. In theory, when I power the receiver on/off with its remote, it should send a signal through the auxiliary outlet to the Belkin power conditioner and switch the Belkin's switched outlets on, thereby powering up the TV. I can get other devices to power up this way but I cannot get the HP TV to come on. I here a "click" sound in the TV like something is going on but the screen will not come on.
Anybody have this similar/same issue? Can anybody suggest a work around? This would help me get rid of my HP remote control as I only use it to power the TV on and off.

I got my HP 50 inch one about a month ago, and have the same question as raj has.
I have Comcast HD STB as well, and for HD signal via DVI (to HDMI input of TV) I'm using 720p, since 720p should be "native" for this plasma.
Unfortunately my SD feed from the same DVI output from Motorola STB doesn't look so good. It looks a bit coarse.. Maybe weak signal??
For SD signal setup, I tried both 480p and 480i, but no noticeable difference.
Using 480i from STB, I was expecting my HP would do the scaling job instead of STB.
Any advice about improving picture quality on SD feed from Motorola STB?
I have another question -- what is the recommended setting on the Comcast Motorola HD STB Box ... (6412 model) -- for output ...
DVI / HDMI / Composite -- 1080i or 720p
And the settting for the standard content -- NONE, 480i, 480p or Strech.
I suspect for the standard content (non hd) -- the scalar built into the HP / Panny is better then the scalar built into the Comcast HD STB 6412 unit.
In regards to the HD content -- I am wondering which would be better as the setting ?
Thanks,

Different stroke for different folks, I guessed. I saw it at CompUSA, too, and thought it didn't look as bad. Actually, the material was similar in quality to the Panny I saw in Tweeter. I am sure the 50" HP is the same material (bezel designed, etc.) as the 42", so....
I FINALLY called this morning and made the SWITCH to the HP PL5000N, but still leave the order for the Panny 50px500... Let's see which arrives first, then cancel the other. :D
Both were ordered at the same on-line vendor for the same price with a 5-yr extended warranty and an HDMI cable free for the HP. With the standard 1 yr + another 1 yr warranty for purchase with a premium credit card, I ended up with 7 years of total warranty...talking about peace of mind. I hope the $250 worth of 5 years extended warranty is worth it, because I never believe in extended warranty (esp. I don't know what exactly the warranty will cover).
2 members on this forum I want to thank for helping me make the switch, and not to mention the fed-up with Panny's shady practice in backlogging the order:
dboxmeyer: Your "uninvited" PM was what did it! :D I used the phone number you listed for the sales dude and he pretty much mentioned your name and claimed the deal he gave me was the same with yours, with the 5 yrs extended warranty. So, what the heck, sick of waiting for the Panny and the all black look on the HP is pretty sharp! The sales dude claimed he went to the same college I did and sounded genuinely a hometown boy, but wouldn't budged on the price he offerred. He tried to push Bose and some other crabs (but not too pushy though) and I declined. I LOL when he drew in a HDMI cable claiming it's worth $100 to $200 dollars, but other than that, I didn't think he was too shady that I would recommend others here and my friends/family to order from him. The other dude I ordered the Panny from (same vendor) was NOT honest. He told me the HP was out of stock, so was the Pio 5060; luckily you, Mr. dboxmeyer, PM me with your experience dealing with this dude... So, I thank you much and let's see if he comes through with the deal as he promised the HP should arrive here in California by UPS truck in 7 days! Keeping my fingers crossed.
Citivas: THANK YOU, for your earlier inputs on switching... I should have listened to you earlier. You were right, I waited that long for the Panny that's why I didn't want to give up, but since 8/29/2005? No more wait! I want my toy before X-Mas! :D
My new xbox360 looks awesome with even the 1-yr old EDTV (the Panny TH42pd25u) through the vga hookup at 720p, and the vga hookup has options up to 1366x768 as native resolution on the HP PL5000N. HDTV will go through a cable card. DVDs will play through the Oppo upconverted at 720p through the DVI-HDMI cable (to be replaced with the HDMI on the PS3's BluRay when it's out mid 2006)... Damn, I'm sure that's gonna do it for me... for another year or two.... :D
Your suggestions always welcome....

Temporarily try viewing your SD channels without the STB by disconnecting the cable from the STB and running it directly to the RF input on the PL5000N. They should look much better. If they do you'll have to trade-in the STB for a cable card or split the cable and run to both the TV and the STB (this is the way I have mine). I almost always do my SD watching with the TV tuner because it's MUCH clearer that way, especially on the analog SD channels.

If it matters to you, so be it. But I have to say in my experience the nice thing about all-black, regardless of materials used, is that once the picture is on it completely disappears -- I don't even notice the rest of the set.

On the warranty with the credit card doubling the manufacturer's standard 1 year warranty, are you sure that the extended 5 year warranty acknowledges the credit card extension and does not instead begin its run concurrently with it? I am surprised -- they usually state they begin after the manufcturer's warranty... Also, some of them market themselves as X years but are really counting the first year too (i.e. mine is sold as 5 years but really is the manufacturer's 1 + 4 extension). Not saying that's the case for you, but just an FYI in general...
cheon and raj,
where are you finding the resolution output setting on the Comcast 6412 STB? I am in the Menu, and I select Cable Box Setup and my only options are Front LED display, AC Outlet, RF Bypass, and View Configuration. If I go to Menu and then Audio Setup, I have Audio Output, Compression, and Stereo Output (which I Have set to no compression and Matrix stereo output. Is this correct?). I don't see anywhere where I can change the resolution. Do we have different firmware or I am looking in the wrong location?

This is my first post, but I have been watching the forum for a couple weeks. Thanks to everyone for excellent advice. All of you your advice is what drove me to purchase the HP. Set it up yesterday, and I absolutely love it. PQ is excellent and the speakers aren't too shabby. Still setting it up properly as I just picked it up last night.
I did notice a couple of things (one that I saw in the forum and one that I didn't)
1. There is definitely a slight "buzz" on my unit. But, I only noticed it when I was actually behind the TV playing with connection. It wasn't noticeable from my couch or elsewhere in the room.
2. I noticed a "ghosting" type image, especially when there is white text on a black background and vice versa. The sales rep said that this is a reflection from the protective shield over the front of the monitor. More noticeable when you view from an angle.
Quick question to those who have already bought. (sorry if this has already been asked and answered)
1. What settings have you been using during "Break-in" period? Should I be really concerned about watching channels with logos (e.g., TNT)
I received a fantastic deal from PC Richards in NJ. I looked at J&R and Internet vendors and their price was significantly lower. They had some special sale going on last week, plus I bought another tv for a friend. So, I guess I have a "guy" now. I think that he will sell for the same price I got. Worth a shot. Happy to refer anyone to him if you PM me.
They have the same policy as J&R: No returns, so I bought the two year plan just in case.

Well, the salesman confirmed it's an "extended warranty of 5 additional years," and the extra 1 yr from the credit card (according to the CC company's site/Am. Exp) stated the 1 yr started either after the original EOM warranty or after the "extended warranty" bought from other 2nd or 3rd party. So, I'll get 7 years, but I really care about 5; I'm pretty sure I will be upgrading in no later than 5 years! :D
My next project? Upgrading my front pj from the InFocus 4805 to the Optoma H78DC3.... I heard the price on that is starting to drop, too... :D
Thanks, again...

Glad I could be helpful, a little payback for all the useful information I've received from this forum. I hope it all works out great for you. I'm delighted with my TV and continue to enjoy it on a daily basis - no regrets at all.
On a side note, the salesguy also promised me he'd throw in a "free" HDMI cable, but I haven't seen it yet. I doubt it'll ever show up, but if it does, I'll certainly be fair and share the details. In the meantime, I'll continue to enjoy my new TV - hope you are doing the same soon!

Just about to buy the HP 42", I wanted to specifically ask if anyone who has bought it is using a Cablevision box, or a cablecard from Cablevision? I have the digital box now, but plan to upgrade to the HD box, and/or cablecard, and was very curious how either is working in terms of non HD channels(CNN, Cnbc, A and E, etc.)? Glad this link started, thanks in advance for any replies.

to clarify, Cablevision uses the Scientific Atlanta boxes: Scientific Atlanta 8300HD w/ HDMI or 4200HD w/ component, thanks.
I have a pl4200n coupled with an SA 8300 HD DVR. (using component cables) I found that setting the cable box on pass-through, and setting the TV to just mode worked best. The SD channels looked pretty darn good using the tv's scaler vs. the cable box scaler. An added bonus of this config was auto stretching of the picture on SD channels. When I hit the HD stations the tv displays them non-streched. Bottom line - everything looks great.

Much appreciated, I didn't know the box had a pass thru setting to allow to go thru the tv's internal tuner, I had heard many using splitters to set up 2 connections to their tv. In any case, this sounds like an easy and optimal solution with great results, thanks again.
Is there a way to enable the pass-through feature on a Comcast Motorola STB?

I'm also curious about pass-through of Comcast STB.
Currently the coaxial cable from my STB to TV is transfering the analog signal of the channel the STB has tuned, and it is shown on TV channel 3.
I tried "RF bypass = on" in the cable setup menu, but didn't work.

Does anyone know if the D* H20 STB accepts HP's codes?
Actually - the tv tuner is not receiving the signal, it's still the cable box. but the TV is doing the conversion instead of the cable box. Between the the tv's better stretching of 4:3 material and better scaler for 480 content, it works better.
Just to clarify - the passthrough function means that the cable box is not upconverting 480 i/p to 720p or 1080i. The cable box is still demodulating the signal from the cable co.
I noticed that the SD content looks much worse when watching through the HD box (SA 8300) vs the non-HD box (SA - can't remember the model number) I don't really want to have two cable boxes running in tandem. Has anyone tried Cable card for SD channels? Are they the same or better than watching SD channels through the HD Box.
Also -- approx once a day, my screen goes blank as soon as I change channels on the cable box. I have to unplug and plug in the HDMI cable to get the signal back. My guess this is a problem with a faulty box. But, just checking if anyone else had that problem.

Try running a second, non-digital (S-Video or composite cables) output from your STB to the TV, in addition to the digital one (HDMI or component) you are currently using. Many people find SD content looks better viewed trhough these cables which send 480i than from the digital cables...

David, I love my HP plasma! Gorgeous, lush color with none of the motion uglies of LCD or DLP. Audio is surprisingly robust. Have this display in a room without a separate sound system and I'm delighted that it sounds as well as it does.

Linda,
I'm curious...do you have the audio set to default which is without the BBE and surround on...or did you turn these features on? To me, the sound is somewhat better with these features off. The simulated surround gives too much of an echo effect where it doesn't belong.

My problem is with some programming, particularly on HBO and Sho or the HD channels, the vocals are hard to hear and are disproportionately muted compared to the effects and score tracks. I've experienced this, even to the point that I hear some distortion at times when I turn up the volume. Thought the speaker was broken, but it would clear up and return to normal on a different channel or program. Anyway, after trying different combos with the settings, I reset audio to default settings and worked from this. At default setting, surround is off, BBE is off, but A1 sound is on which I believe balances the sound level between different programs and stations. I moved Bass to 8 and Treble down to 0. Audio Leveler is set to 0. Without the echo effect, or simulated surround sound the audio is more centered, somewhat louder on these channels. However, the amp in this set pales in comparison to the amp in my previous Proscan HDTV direct-view. The Proscan had tremendous depth....deep bass, superb high treble, clear mid-range and this came from small, bookshelf speakers that were connected to external outputs on the set.

CJ, You're right. I'm just getting started with my PDP so I haven't had an opportunity to play with the settings much yet. Depending on the source, it needs some tweaking. Sudden loud sequences followed by hard-to-hear dialogue. Tried Audio Leveler and helps, again, depending on the source.

When your power strip shuts off it's like unplugging the TV. It's not uncommon behavior for remote controlled devices (and computers) to be off when plugged in, even if they were turned on when you unplugged them. A better solution for what you're trying to accomplish is an all-in-one remote like one of the Harmony models.

I don't think it is a good idea to power your tv from the aux power outlet of your receiver. It probably cannot handle the power requirements of the plasma.

Well, I brought home the Hewlett Packard PL4200N this weekend, and I am impressed. I had the 42" Hitachi at home before I returned it, so I was able to directly compare them, side by side, and in my opinion the HP was a better deal, with better picture quality. It had FAR better blacks than the Hitachi. I was acutally able to see details in dark areas, and some of the dark boards in Halo 2 didn't look washed out dark gray on the HP like it they did on the Hitachi. Bright colored scenes were about equal on both, and they looked just as sharp on both sets, even thought the Hitachi has a 1024x1024 screen.
One of the biggest plusses was no image retention. The Hitachi retained images like crazy. I was able to play a good 20 minutes of Halo 2, Burnout, and watch some SD with bars, and saw no burn in on the HP. If I was using the setting menu on my cable box for more than 5 minutes on the Hitachi, the image would stay afterwards. I will still give it the 100hr break in period regardless, but this let me breath a HUGE sigh of relief.
The split screen PIP actually works on the HP. The Hitachi has it, but even though the manual says you can, I was unable to switch the inputs on the PIP. I was only able to watch what was connected on the tuner (which I don't use) and none of the video inputs. Pretty useless.
However, the HP does not remember individual input color settings, and I feel the sound on the Hitachi was slightly better. More bass on the Hitachi. No motorized swivel on the HP, but it does swivel, which the Panny's do not I believe. Also the HP does not have a screen wipe feature, but it does have pixel shifting which seems to happen automatically, and not something you can control. I don't know if this is the case on the Panny 500u.
Mine says it was manufactured in Japan in October of 2005. I was able to a REALLY great deal at PC Richard and Son here in NY. Check out their website to find out their price. BB and CC wanted to charge very close to MSRP for the Panny 500u, and I had to wait almost 3 weeks to get one. Not interested.
The HP is definately a great alternative to the Panny 500's (considering they are the SAME EXACT displays except for the cabinet and moniker) and readily available.

I just got the 50". So far SD using D* looks really good w/ some channels (E, VH1) looking almost HD. Can't wait for this weekend when D* installs MPEG-4 and H20.

The TV is connected to the Belkin power conditioner, not the receiver. Agreed that the receiver cannot handle that kind of load.
When the receiver is powered on, it sends a signal to the Belkin power conditioner to turn the switched outlets on. The TV is plugged into one of the switched outlets in the Belkin, and this should turn the TV on. I hear a click but no power to the TV. When the receiver is powered off, it sends a signal to the Belkin power conditioner again to turn the switched outlets off. But again, the switching on is not working.

Seems strange that the HP wouldn't have the same pixel wipe feature as the Panny given that they probably have the same guts and firmware. Can you confirm that it doens't have pixel wipe. Is this anything to be concerned about (age old burn-in fear). I guess I can just get a pixel wipe program on some DVD?
I thought the Panny did NOT have pixel orbiter (shifting), but you say the HP does. Where did you see this?

You spoke to the wrong guy. 6th Ave is like a used car dealership -- different story from everyone you talk to. You made a cold call over the phone and someone who probably didn't know you from a potential competitor spy quotes you list. That's fine, but know that many people here got deals from them that are 4-figures from that... Ask for "Steve" with the online sales group...

It really wasn't confusing as I was clearly comparing the HP to the Hitachi. Considering I was also speaking about the image retention on the Hitachi, it was also obvious I was talking about the Hitachi vs. the HP.
Anywho, the HP, compared to the Hitachi, does not have a screen wipe feature. Now, I don't know if the Panny 500u has it, but in the HP manual, as well as the PAnny one, it says there is a pixel shifting feature that kicks in when the unit senses an image has been displayed for too long. There doesn't seem to be a way to manual control it though, unlike the Hitachi. Neither the HP manual or the Panny 500u manual say anything about a screen wipe feature. I find this strange also as many of the the newer models from different manufacturers have this. Is HP/Panasonic so sure of their screens that they feel they don't need it? Let's hope so....
However, I played a good hours worth of Halo2 2, and the most retained image on the Hitachi was the shield meter (a bright Turqoise) and the score counters (bright red and bright blue), and neither of these were retained on the HP screen. I even turned up the settings a bit, and everything was fine. On the Hitachi though, even 10 minutes of this would cause image retention which would need to be followed up by a screen wipe, or extended viewing of full screen material. Seriously annoying.

For those interested, jr.com still has some HP PL5000Us in stock. I just bought one at a very good price. I'm not a troll. I was just desperately trying to find that Panny 500U which seems months out if ever. The HP is the same set and until a few days ago could be had fairly easily on the web. After calling and browsing all over the web, J&R was the only place that had it still. I imagine they will be in the "sold out" condition soon too.
Looking forward to my new HP coming Friday hopefully. Will post feedback when I get it. I'll do a side by side comparision with my SXRD which is going back.

Anybody know why the HP5000N weights so much more than the Panny 500U: 119 lbs vs 88 lbs? The HP site claims that the unit weighs an impossible 158 lbs with the stand - I find that hard to believe. Although if the unit really does weight 120, then a 40 pound stand is probably not unreasonable to keep it from tipping.
Can somebody who has the HP comment on this?
Need to see if my TV stand (with a glass top) will hold this thing.

You are comparing the 50" HP with the 42" Panasonic. I just checked the Panasonic user manual and it says the 50" weighs about 115 lbs (it also says the 42" weighs 88 lbs.)...
The HP with the stand IS about 25 lbs. heavier than the Panasonic. It is a completely different stand design. Panasonic has a light stand that relies on its pointy diamond shape to prevent tipping. HP has embedded weight into the base of its stand to prevent tipping, so the stand is about 30 lbs...

I've been on a list to get the 42" Panasonic 500U for over 2 months now - was waiting for a great deal thanks to a discount extended to my employer. Every week I'd call in, and every week they'd say "well, there's a shipment coming next week, and we're working through the list." Needless to say, this was all supposed to come through before the holidays. So, today I call and I'm told the 500U is discontinued, best we can offer you is first on the list for the '06s sometime in March. ... I was not happy!
With that, I promptly ordered the PL4200N and am set to pick it up tomorrow or Saturday...all thanks to you guys. can't say I'm thrilled that my SA8300 HD won't work with the TV, but it's a small issue to deal with. I'm just happy that I'm getting a darn good plasma for a pretty groovy price (not 6 Ave - PM to compare notes).
That said, since this is my first plasma and I'm not 100%, I have a few Qs - hoping someone can help me out.
1) Any recommendations out of the box???
2) For set-up, I was going to drop a 12 more dollars and get HDMI to connect to my cable box ...but, I understand that using HDMI you can't adjust the aspect ratio? Is that true?
If so, what do you all recommend? Component and RCA? That's sorta stinks on the audio side, no?
3) Where, exactly, aside from the power cord, do the ferrite cores go?
4) How do you do a screen wipe? How often? Reason I ask is What do you all do about the near persistent BUGS on most TV stations? My wife watches HGTV and the Food network and both always have it on.
Thanks!

OK, found this thread after I posted, specific to the HDMI and aspect ration issue. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=538357&page=4&pp=30
So now I'm wondering if the problems I read about where some people couldn't get the "just" setting to work on SD channels is because the set-top box wasn't setup correctly? If that's the case, then, the HDMI isn't the culprit....uh, right?

I've recently purchased the HP 42 inch plasma and have the SA8300HD box. What i've done is set the picture in the "settings" menu of the stb to "auto dvi/hdmi". This is basically the "pass-thru" setting when hdmi is connected. Once this is done, on all SD channels you get the typical 480i that you can change aspect for all you want, including "just". I also removed 480i from passing through via the startup wizard, so SD channels are upconverted to 480p. Not sure if it makes that big of a deal, i can still change the aspect. and it makes me feel better too.

cctex - that's good to hear! Was getting very fearful of a bad purchase. Seems like many people never looked in to configure the 8300 box...I'm supposed to go pick up the TV as soon as I can borrow an SUV. How do you like it? What did you put your settings at?

I absolutely love the TV. I am a first time HD box owner, so just about anything was gonna wow me. But I've put this baby through just about everything and has handled it with ease. I'd say i'm picky with my televisions as a friend of mine has an 50" sony LCD RP and mine blows it out of the water.
To configure the STB, plug the box in but don't turn it on and hit the guide(?) and info(?) button ON the box at the same time. This will get you to the startup wizard.
I have my settings similar to what several owners of the PX500U have. There's a thread with those in it somewhere here. Anything you do, don't use vivid, it seems it produces automatic clayface.
The only negatives with my combination of SA8300HD and this Tv is slight underscan on the top of the image (SD and HD programming) and programming cuts out for a second when plugged into HDMI after about a 2 hour bout of watching.

I have Passport so there is no "Setup Wizard" - i have to manually go into the Output Formats menu and set it up to output 480i and 1080i and i have disabled 480p and 720p. 1080i looks better/sharper than 720p, and 480i looks much better than 480p because it's better to send a 480i signal to the TV so it can scale it to 768p. If you set the DVR to output at 480p then it scales 480i to 480p then sends it to the TV which then scales it again to 768p so you're basically scaling it twice this way.

CCTEX - Randy - thank you both for the info.
I actually just moved out of NYC so, I've had both the passport, and now the SARA software versions of the SA8300HD (totally different converation comparing those two :) ). When I first got the passport version, I had a devil of a time getting it to work right - was stuck in 720p mode which my CRT at the time couldn't handle.
More recently, I've been playing around with my CRT (32" HDTV Panasonic) and I agree, the 480i looks better on that. 480p just gets all pixely/shakey..can't wait to get the set...HP name and all ;)

All - just wanted to update and thank you all again for providing this tremendous resource. I received my PL4200N yesterday and even right out of the box...WOW :)
It's really nice looking and the picture quality is simply stunning. HD is stellar. When I turned it on, the incredibles was in its final credits on HD -- the blacks were deep and the credits were full 3-D effect. PBS and some basketball -- all looked terrific. Surprisingly, the SD is pretty darn good in "just" mode...in fact, I'd say significantly better than my 1 year old 32" HD CRT.
Only cons I can think of are:
1) Remote - wish it worked with my 8300HD cable box /cable box remote worked with the TV. The TV's remote will turn the cable box on/off and do basic channels, but that's it.
2) Sound - it's as good as can be expected for small speakers, bass could be better. I'm thinking about the next purchase to be a denon s-301 HTIB for this thing.
3) 1 HDMI vs. 2 or 3...while I'm using component and analog for the cable box and my existing older DVD, I could see going to an HDMI Upconverting DVD player and wanting to go HDMI to the TV from cable...or, what happens when the next playstation comes out or the apple home center or something.

Thank You to everyone on this thread for all the valuable information they have provided me on the PL5000N. Just like many others, I was waiting for delivery on a TH50PX50U until I found this thread. I got a very good price on the Panny but the store was not able to deliver because of the lack of inventory. Then I found out about the PL5000N and the store offered it to me at the same price and could deliver it to me the next day. Needless to say, I took the deal and have no regrets. PM me if you are interested in the price I paid as I am interested to see what others have paid to see if I did indeed get a good price.
I was wondering if others who own this TV have noticed that when you turn the set on or off, you get a clicking sound? When I first got the TV, I would hear a click each time i turned it on or off. Now it's silent.
Just wondering if this is anything to be concerned about or if it is normal.
TIA.

I am yet another first poster who has monitored this thread. Initially I was looking at the THPX50U. Best Buy, Circuit City and a local retailer all want just shy of the MSRP, plus, all of them have to order them from their warehouse because they are out of stock in the store. My stores don't carry the 500 model, but I was initially intrigued by this model.
After discovering this thread I found that I liked the aesthics of the HP more than the Panny, and when I found a low price from a reputable supplier, I jumped. I just submitted by order for the PL4200N. Hopefully it gets here soon, I can't wait to get it set up.

Just got a 360 the other day. Had to get a core. Didn't feel like waiting for the Premiums to be available. So I bought the hard drive and high def cables. I noticed when playing games, especially Madden 06 and white areas of scenes, it seems like the white areas are breaking up. Like the numbers on the jerseys don't seem to pan smoothly together. I also tried Perfect Dark Zero and it seems like on bright scenes, or areas with white or almost white bright areas, those areas seem to clip or break apart when the camera pans.
The other thing I noticed, when you hit the Xbox menu button (the one that takes you to the dashboard) when the blade scrolls in, it looks like the blade breaks up. This is only during games, not when I'm in the menu part.
Is this part of the game, 360 or cables? I tried it on another TV (sony 34"xbr high def) and it does the same thing. I tried switching between the 3 display options (480, 720, 1080). Just wondering if I should just live with it or take this 360 back?

I got my PL5000N thru the HP employee discount program. You should be fine because it says in the FAQ that you can buy for friends and have it shipped to them. Here is what it says:Can I make purchases for friends and family through the program?
Yes! There are three conditions: 1) The employee needs to place the order themselves. They should not give access to their account. It is OK to ship the order directly to the other person's address. 2) The employee should not profit monetarily from the transaction. 3) Purchases for friends and family count towards the employee's annual purchase limit.

From what you describe, this sounds like a problem with how those specific games were made, with the Vertical Sync turned off, so the refresh rates of the video output (of the tv) and the graphics rendering (of the game) are not always on the same page, which results in the tearing effect, a new image getting sent before the other has been fully drawn. Nothing to worry about hopefully.. most other 360 games have v-sync enabled.

But settings that work for one person usually aren't optimal for other people due to differences in sources, setup, components, regional signal quality, etc. I've tried other people's settings and none of em look as good as the ones i came up with (which are considerably different). I basically run my Contrast really high and brightness somewhere above or below zero depending on the source.
Got the tv last night. 6th Ave delivered it on time as scheduled. I took it off of Vivid mode and put it in Standard. I looked through the 22 pages of this thread to find out what settings to put it on to burn it in but I didn't find the posts. TV looks good. I am not a TV expert but the picture looks pretty good too, I'm sure it is going to look much better when I get it set up after 100 hours. I know to vary the content, not play XBox etc, and no black bars, but as far as break in actual settings, what did you guys recommend? Thanks in advance.
I had the same worries as you with the same set (50" though) and I just decided to be reasonable and not worry about burn-in at all. Using AVIA, my settings are Picture: 23 Brightness: 12 Color: +5 Tint: -5 Sharpness: 0. Those are higher than most, but I'm just not worrying about it and I don't believe that these sets will burn-in like older models. I don't play games but I do watch movies in full aspect ration with bars at the top. I have my cable box set to stretch 4:3 material so I never get black bars on the side except when watching commercials on HD channels.
No burn in of any kind after 100 hours.
Find the official Panasonic Settings thread and use that.
During break in, simply avoid black bars and static images and just adjust the settings till they look good to you and don't worry about it. That's what i did and everything is fine.
Ok I give up, where is the Official Panasonic Settings thread? I have been looking for 20 minutes.

I read in the thread all the statements regarding the fact that no one knows the HP 4 digit remote control code. Those were all posted in October though. Just wondered as we are three months further on whether any one found the relevant code. Such a pain to go back to two remotes again.

olax
I bought a Harmony 659 at a good price from Amazon which works great on my HP and all my other equipment. I first purchased a Harmony 520 at Wal-Mart (for $5.00 more than the 659) that was a piece of junk. The 659 is MUCH better. The HP codes seem to be unique so until manufacturers of cable boxes, etc add them the Harmony is your best bet.

It appears to have been addressed and answered in this forum a number of times that HP PL5000N is the same as Panasonic 50PX500U but HP insists that though the glass is the same electronics is not. However, I will appreciate input from someone using clear QAM capability of the PL5000N on a regular basis as to how stable it is, it seems that Panasonic is somewhat flaky.

I just had my PL5000N calibrated by an ISF tech. He brought his own panasonic remote (which he said he got from panasonic to do service adjustments) which he used to enter the service menu of the HP and make the adjustments. For every other adjustment, he used the HP remote. It never occured to me to ask more about this remote. When he exited the service mode, I saw at the bottom of the screen, "Copyright Matsushita Corporation" so I guess that puts to rest any doubts that this set was made by Panasonic. Regarding the calibration...grey scale was not too far off before calibration, but there was a slight red push which he brought down some. He did other calibrations for both HD and DVD inputs. Highly recommend him for anyone in the Northeast area especially....www.lionav.com My settings are much higher than I had them previously and the picuture has more punch and realism than it did before. Blacks and shadow-detail seem to be improved a lot, but my viewing at the new settings is very limited and I need more time to adjust. Gregg Loewen is the ISF calibrator to contact.

Who at HP insists this? I had a problem with my PL5000N (flicker on composite inputs during warm up from minute 8 to minut 15) and HP setup a repair for me. The service assistant directly told me that Panasonic manufactures the electronics. The parts were delayed for 10 days because Panasonic was not responding to HP's emails to send replacement parts to a service technician. The boxes that contain the circuit boards in the repair kit are stamped Panasonic.
As a side note, the repair attempt was a total joke - the original problem was fixed, but the "technician" did something to my HDMI input so that it breaks up and drops out frequently. Not a big surprise given that the so called technician had no idea what he was doing, had never taken this set apart, had a huge box of 35 circuit boards and had no instructions other than trial and error. I advised him to try replacing about 7 of the boards close to the input connectors and try it out. I had to keep telling him that he was putting things back together all wrong. He never grounded himself and used a magnetic screwdrive to remove circuit boards etc. Its a miracle the thing didn't smoke when we turned it on.
So now HP is sending me a replacement set. After I told them this story, they didn't ask any questions and just sent me a replacement.

sorry - i didnt word my question right.
what i meant to ask was, -23 seemed like an extremely low number. although i have never tried it, i assumed that such a low number would produce an image that is unwatchable - i guess i was wrong.

Got the TV mounted. With the Sanus wall mount we had to drill our own holes due to the studs being at a weird position in my room. My PL4200N is awesome, everyone who sees the picture is in love with it. I am still trying to get my optimum settings but I am very pleased so far with how sharp everything is. Compared to my 52 inch Panasonic projection, this TV looks awesome. I have not tried any HD yet, don't have the receiver or the antannae to get the signals.
I am very pleased that I purchased this TV, got a great price on it and it looks great. This thread was the sole reason I got it and I wanted to thank everyone who contributed.

I've been lurking here for a month or so and finally bought the PL4200N directly through HP due to my EPP discount. Now, I have a question:
For those of you who purchased from HPshopping, did you purchase an extended warranty and, if so, would you be willing to provide details on it? I ordered the PL4200N yesterday and am trying to find out about extending the warranty. HPShopping does not sell the warranties and refers me to HP Total Care. HP Total Care, which I have called several times, has been difficult to work with. Some people are not aware that they sell the extended service plans and/or forward my call to voice response unit he!!. They finally told me that they do sell them but I need to have the unit with the serial number, etc. before they will quote a price for it. Also, if you would also share the price you can PM me.
How is everyone finding their HP Plasmas?
I'm just making the final decision on whether I should pick one up before the new models come out....apparently they are not using the Panasonic anymore, and from the initial spec postings the new HP's are a huge step down.
I've been very impressed with the set in the stores...pq i find second to pioneers alone.
For the price...doesn't seem like it can be beat...just wondering how people are feeling 2-3-4 months after purchasing the set now.
How is the PC connectivity with the 42"...anyone that can comment on this I appreciate!

I love my PL5000N! So so happy. I basically have Panasonic quality with a much more aesthetic frame and base. Its absolutely awesome after three months.
Of course I had to get mine repaired and then replaced due to flickering problems first on HDMI and then on composite, but they replaced it with no hassles. Took quite a while though because HP has to order parts from Panasonic which isn't very responsive.
Great. Thanks for the update.
Do you play any games on it? Either HTPC or xbox, ps2 etc??
Are these tv's (with the appropriate treatment) okay to use with game systems with no retention/burn in issues?

I don't play games on it and would think twice about it. But overall, I'm not too worried about burn-in. All that BS about turning down the settings until it looks completely drag for the first XXX hours ... I don't buy it with these latest Pannies. I used AVIA to set mine up nicely and I don't worry about it. The biggest chance I have for burn in is that darn Comcast DVR progress menu that pops up when you fast forward or rewind or pause - which I do all the time. No burn-in on that after 3 months.

Dear Zmansbr,
Just got the PL4200N and am very happy with it. And have noticed some flickering when using my DVD/HDMI output directly from my Pionner AV79i player into the HP. The cable is Monster top of the line, and my receiver is HK AVR 7300 (flagship), so my equipment is all top notch. How much flickering warrants a tech call? Any more info on this sure would be appreciaited, especially since I've had the unit less than a week.
Many thanks in advance - Mark
I have had the PL4200N for about 3 or 4 months. No complaints at all - works great. The pc connection is just fine (through a receiver). No flickeriing, no problems at all, etc. Would happily by it again.
great...thanks for the updates.

I do have a question. When connecting a laptop or PC to the set, even if I set the display output to 1024x768, I get the gray bars on both sides. The only way to get it full screen is to change the aspect but then everything looks stretched out.
Is there some trick to getting the the picture to display full screen without looking stretched?

Although I love my HP PL-5000N I do question the wisdom of buying one in two months unless you get a spectacular price. As you know these are based on the 500U series Panasonics, but in two months the 600U Panasonics will be out at MRSP's of $2999 for the 42" and $3999 for the 50". Naturally these will be discounted further so why would you want the old technology?

Interesting point...and my decision will be based on price when I'm ready to buy. I anticipate the HP's going clearance and I will be monitoring their price to try for the best possible deal.
I am also dealing with Canadian prices...but if the latest Panasonic is indeed only a slight jump in price it very well may be the tv for me...but if a clearance HP is going to save me $800 or more...I may still go for the year old technology...then for the $800 I can get all my cables, HD Satellite box, and wallmount etc.
Thanks for the tip...

Yup, I'm using the VGA. I haven't been able to figure it out so I'm guessing it may not be able to it. That would seem weird to me though since I'm sure HP considered the use if it's PC's on this thing.
Ya...the 50" has the 16:9 resolution of 1366x768 or something like that. I wonder what happens if you use the HDTV features on a video card like Geforce 6600 and set that to HDTV display 1280x720.
The 42px500u is one of my favorites as well as the others mentioned. I like th HP because of the Piano Black Finish and would love to have the Toshiba 42HP95. The Toshiba 42HP95 ($2,999.99) may be the best priced, but it really competes with the 42PX50U ($2,999.99) while the 42PX500U ($3,499.99) and HP4200N probably competes with the Toshiba 42HPX95 ($3,499.99).
I like the idea of adding the Toshiba Symbio Digital Recorder ($299.99). I want to time-shift record my favorite off-air TV shows in HD so badly and the Symbio is probably one of the cheapest ways to do that I am aware off.

Toshiba is also rebadged Panny as far as I know. I believe the Toshibas are rebadged 'lower priced Panny' and HP is the higher priced model.
However, with the 600 series, the Pannys will be different than either the Toshiba or HP consumer models.
I recently also saw a Bang & Olufsen Plasma and it was exactly the same as the commerical Pannys - 'exactly' the same - same input locations, same input configuration and you can tell the screws had been replaced to remove the little handles on the side. You could even see that the stands were interchangeable!
The Bang and Olufsen sales guy was not very happy when I mentioned the remarkable similarity between the two sets, when one cost over three times as much as the other!
Before this he was talking about all the innovations that they had put into the set - it was everything that you find in the commercial Panny brochure, with diferent terms - things like the color management, AGC, the correction for very fast movement etc, etc,, plus all about the deeper blacks.....
They have a 37 inch, 42, 50 and 65 inch versions of their uber expensive Plasmas - coincidently the same as the Panny commercial versions!
I would like to place my HP PL42000N plasma above the fire place. However, I don't want to wall mount it yet. The mantel is deep enough to just sit the tv on the mantel w/out the stand, but I am worried about the tv tipping. Are there any suggestions/products to keep the tv from tipping (aside from wall mounting)? Thanks

I'm seriously considering the PL4200N -- this may seem like a silly thing to care about, but can any current owners out there tell me if the unit displays the HP logo (on the screen) when the unit powers on?
Seems like computer manufacturers like to do this, while the consumer electronics manufacturers do not. Maybe it's just me, but I don't like feeling like I'm being subjected to a short advertisement everytime I turn on a display.

Not sure why that matters, staring at a logo is better than staring at a screen imo, esp. on a 10-15 second startup, and the HP logos on the front of the new models is tiny.

CompUSA still carries it, though it is discontinued and quantities are thin.
I'm actually looking at a floor model. I'm a little concerned that this particular set seems really dim, even compared to 50/500u sets I've seen.
Even though it's been on the floor since March (pawed by countless customers & abused by employees), the picture quality is still quite good, despite my concerns with brightness.

Also make sure someone didn't place it in Cinema mode as that will make it dim. Try Standard Mode, Sharpness -15, Brightness +10, and Picture +22. If it doesn't look at least as good as the other sets on display there's something wrong. Also look carefully at a solid color light screen for signs of image retention. I got my PL5000N last October and it looks great, no problems.
Have you adjusted the brightness and picture controls? Also make sure someone didn't place it in Cinema mode as that will make it dim. Try Standard Mode, Sharpness -15, Brightness +10, and Picture +22. If it doesn't look at least as good as the other sets on display there's something wrong. Also look carefully at a solid color light screen for signs of image retention. I got my PL5000N last October and it looks great, no problems.
Thanks for the tip - I'll try that. Cinema (on its default settings) was practically unwatchable and Vivid was - well, vivid. But I played with it on Standard and the picture was fantastic, very natural looking, very crisp, even compared to the higher res LCDs next to it.
I know part of the brightness problem is that it's in a CompUSA (there's no semi-darkened areas in there, all bright) and that it's surrounded by Samsung & Olevia LCDs, so it's going to look a little dim next to those spotlights. I guess my concern stems from the fact that it also looked really dim compared to the Samsung ln-s4253 next to it.
With regular content, it's not really noticable. But when all-white or a very bright image was displayed, there was a stark contrast between the HP and the sets around it, LCD and plasma. The white was also pretty "dirty," even with the color turned down, unless it was Cool.
I've got to admit that this set has been sitting around for months, and I never gave it two looks because of the HP logo. When I read on here that it's really a stealth panasonic, I started playing around, took it out of Vivid, and wow did it surprise me.
Thanks again - I'll make a trip down and play with it tomorrow.

Hopefully a fellow HP owner can help me out. I purchased the PL4200N, and I'm trying to access the service menu to determine the hours of use. (It was a floor model.) I've tried the instructions from BruZZi's FAQ (thanks for the great resource):
..PE-4200N / PL-4200N / PL-5000N
..Hold down " VOLUME (-) " button on THE PLASMA TV.
..While still holding down the " VOLUME (-) " press "RECALL" on the remote 3 times.
..Service Menu appears.
..Use remote 1 & 2 to navigate main menu items.
..Use remote 3 & 4 to navigate sub-menu items.
..Use Vol+ and Vol- on remote to change item value.
..Write down all values before changing
..Once a value is changed, THE CHANGE IS MADE.
..Power off to exit Service Mode.
... but the set does not respond. Perhaps I am doing it wrong? I have no "RECALL" button on my remote; I have a "Last" button and have been using that instead. Is that correct?

Either you missed it or they gave you the wrong remote. Look on p. 22 of the manual for a picture of the correct remote.
Now that you have it home how do you like it?

Anyone have an idea if a refurbished 4200N from HP would be worth it if it is substantially cheaper than even the 60XU from Panny for this year? I can get a good deal on one, but am always skeptical of refurbished models versus originals. If I get an extended warrarnty it still comes out close in price to the 60XU Only reason I would want the HP is because of the sleek look as opposed to the consumer 06 Panny's which look like someone though gray plastic was cool this year.
Thoughts?

Your instinct is spot on. I got the wrong remote - typical, I guess, for a floor model. A little research on HP's website tells me this is the remote for the LC series... probably LC3200N. Where the Recall button should be, it just says "CC" (closed captioning?)... I'll see if I can order a replacement through HP. The store doesn't have it. (Or maybe I can find the guy who bought their last 3200N.)
I'm quite pleased with it, now that it's in my living room, and for what I paid I won't cry should I decide to upgrade in a year or two.

I think it's an excellent display, though it doesn't quite have the number of inputs many of this year's models do. That might or might not matter to you. I just purchased one myself - a floor model from a brick & mortar, not factory refurbished, so I would surmise a refurb would be an even better buy in terms of reliability out-of-box and support down the line. (See my post above about the wrong remote.)
I think it's a great display, and a really fantastic value if you can find the right price.

I have the 659 and it operates all of my equipment. Amazon has it for < $100 and you'll probably pay near that for an OEM remote from HP. To program it you connect it to your PC with the supplied USB cable and go to Harmony's website. After you enter the make/model of your equipment and answer some questions about how you want the items to interact (When you play a DVD do you use the surround sound system or the built-in TV audio, etc.) it programs the remote for you. With a few more hours spent touching up some of the commands you can make it the only remote you'll ever need. BTW, you don't need the original remote for any of this. Just stay away from the 5xx series (as sold at WalMart, etc), I had one of those first and it was awful (some buttons stuck from day one, after two months the volume button quit altogether)

I bought my PL4200N refurbished through HP back in February and, like you, found that the price with the warranty was still less than what I would have paid for the lower level panny (50u, at that time). I am totally pleased with it. The only thing that I have noticed that would indicate that someone else used it is a very small scuff on the top edge of the unit which will never be seen. The standard warranty is only 90 days on refurbished units. I was told that I needed to buy the extended warranty within that time period but I called about a week after the 90 days ended and they still sold it to me. It adds to my peace of mind. I hope to never use it.

Thanks, that's now on my list of things to buy. Would I be able to program the Harmony to be able to access the service menu?
I've been enjoying the PL4200N for a week now, but I've got one issue that might be a dealbreaker and force a return. I really wanted to use the 360's VGA adapter with this set's PC Input, but the since the Tint & Color controls are disabled when using this input, I'm stuck with what the display does by default. Changing the Temp helps a little, depending on the signal (Game vs. DVD) but it doesn't solve the problem - everything's way oversaturated. James Bond looks like ronald's buddy grimmace.
Is this something that can be corrected via the service menu? Can the default color level on VGA be adjusted down? I'm satisfied with the color on the other inputs.
I plan on getting this professionally calibrated, but not before my return window expires, and I don't want to be stuck with a TV that can't do what I want.
I really dig the display, otherwise.
Hi guys, new member here.
I've had the PL4200N for 2 weeks now after getting a good refurb deal off the hp official site. This is one sweet looking set. However, one of the things that I find kind of annoying in the picture image particularly in sd is a clear artifact like 1 inch thick line that goes straight down the left and right sides of the picture. The vertical line can get very distinct especially during fast moving images. The picture source is component off a sat box.
If anybody knows what I'm talking about and experiences the same effect, please let me know if there is a way to remedy this.
Thanks.
Anybody know if you can adjust the sharpness in the service menu? I think mine needs more that the +30 with 720p material, because it still looks soft.
Anybody know if you can adjust the sharpness in the service menu? I'm surprised you can tolerate it let alone ask for more! Your problem with 720P material is caused by the set's inability to properly scale it... basically it down-converts it to SD, then up-converts it. If you're using a STB make sure it outputs HD to 1080i and all will be well.
Oh, and turn that sharpness down!
