Anybody using this for their HDTV connection? How is it? Better than component to VGA? I don't suppose it would be, but you never know.

Providing that the device timings are good, the converted image via DVI should be better than component.

I guess I'll have to buy a cable and give it a shot. Thanks Kei

Without a "box" that does D/A, this only works if you are using DVI-I or DVI-A and sending an analog signal - which is VGA (analog RGB) - only a cable adapter would be needed. Very few devices except for PCs will send VGA via DVI.

Just to clarify:
DVI can carry both a digital signal (DVI-D) and an analog signal (DVI-A). A cable or input or output that will carry both is termed DVI-I. Some TV inputs, but not all, accept both. The Sharp is an example of one that accepts both.
VGA is an analog signal. DVI to VGA with a cable only works if the sending DVI connector drives the analog side of the connection. The average home theater DVI connector does not. (Similarly, component or VGA to DVI with a cable only works if the input accepts the analog side of the connection.)
It sounds from your question, given that you are comparing to component, that you have a piece of equipment that will not be usable with just a DVI to VGA cable.
It is a great pity that the way DVI works is so complex, but it is a fact of life.

My cable box has a DVI out, and my plasma (42PWD8UK) has a VGA in...

You are not going to be able to do this with a cable. There is no chance that your cable box is driving the analog pins.

oh well, just thought I'd ask. I'll just use a component to vga cable then.
Thanks marty
